i love this sooo much i love when ppl tell stories through more than just the lyrics in your songs i love clever musical choices i love songs that are crafted to be a certain way deliberately and for storytelling reasons
the tritone begging to be resolved yessss v apt. and so glorious opening up to g major. i love that i've progressed enough with my music theory now to appreciate this
I hated music theory in college so I'm not a music major anymore but YOUR music theory videos somehow make just enough sense to make me cry and get chills
Bless them tritones. I always think of the Heart-Shaped Box riff-has that lovely rub. Love how you use harmony in all your songs, both musically and thinking how it suits a lyric
Love this. Also. The Devil Interval was a hot topic of conversation in fundamentalist circles when I was still going to church. There's even a book about how minor chords are potentially "evil," being farther from god than GOOD major chords. It's as silly as it sounds.
I _love_ music theory for it's own sake. I think a lot of people see theory as "rules you should follow", when I see it as connecting the dots, and hearing new things in music I love. This can help me to hear things in my own music, too. Breaking the rules is also 'theory', since theory isn't about rules! There are no rules, just conventions. I think you can theorize about many styles, if you take the music on it's own terms.
I. Heard. The. Song. For. The. First. Time. Ever. A few minutes ago. And as I’m digesting what I’d just heard and thinking how insanely interesting it was I see “hot mess music theory” and I can’t be more excited.
I've been learning piano and music theory for twelve years and have never heard of a polyrhythm! Super cool! and I love the idea of key-changing to a minor (or just a key change that goes lower rather than higher). Thanks for these behind the scenes videos, they're super helpful for inspiration as a young artist!
it's weird bc i've always wanted to be a musician so i write, play instruments, produce etc. but only self-learned so i both understand what she's talking about while still learning something new lol
idk why but watching this with headphones on makes me feel like I'm watching a trailer to a movie! ..or maybe just like those rlly fancy ads that play before a movie in theaters but either way watch with headphones!! sounds soooo good
I love how dodie writes in major that changes it to minor in a bunch of her music. It really adds alot to the building of the song. Along with the use of tritones since they sound clashy. I used to think they just did not work till profs showed how to make them sound good. Luv dodie💛
Currently taking a music theory class and it’s so nice to understand what in the world she’s talking about now 😂
i can only imagine
Can u pls explain what she’s saying pretty PLSSS I’m trying to get more into music theory but idk where to start
that snapping was so impressive
The 4:5 polyrhythm was wrong though
I’d really love to hear the music theory behind some of your other songs if that’s something you’re interested in doing!!!
Yes, please make it a series!!
i am feeling like a tritone today. i hope it resolves soon.

YESSS agreed I love doing that with my own music too, it just feels so cool and exciting
It's almost as if musicians had been doing that for millenia
@@ldgariusthey do but like, most people don’t think about that when they’re listening to music
the tritone begging to be resolved yessss v apt. and so glorious opening up to g major. i love that i've progressed enough with my music theory now to appreciate this
i love artists who actually know theory and puts sneaky things into their songs
this made me realise i know nothing about music theory lol. you’re really clever and creative!!!
You're in for a big reveal then when you go further and further
I hated music theory in college so I'm not a music major anymore but YOUR music theory videos somehow make just enough sense to make me cry and get chills
Mate no wonder this song gets my ears so good. So well crafted dodie, you are a genius.
For a class, me and my friends, made a vocal arrangement for the song, we notice all of these, we loved them, and working it was a lot of fun.
"again and again and again" - I see what you did there.
you should do these for some of your other songs, it’s so cool to learn about!!
*Jacob Collier has entered the chat*
Can we p l e a s e get an instrumental release?? 😍
I know nothing about music theory but just your passion and excitement, the pride you have in your art is so adorable and addictive
It’s fantastic to hear this. I’m 62 and discover optimism in finding good smart young musicians on YT, TikTok & Instagram.
Those tritones always get me soft, the hole song is beautiful
Bless them tritones. I always think of the Heart-Shaped Box riff-has that lovely rub. Love how you use harmony in all your songs, both musically and thinking how it suits a lyric

beautiful. thank you for this. the percussion sounds remind me of gojira's 'the art of dying' intro. in a great way.
I love music theory, especially when explained by dodie
I don't know why but I adore this woman. She's my taste.

Dodie quoting Adam Neely is all I needed, if you don't know, go check him out! One of the best out there !
I love this! I'd love to learn more about music theory in general and in your music!!
