FILM SYNOPSIS♡
In the Mexican town of San Angel, Manolo (Diego Luna), Maria (Zoë Saldana) and Joaquin (Channing Tatum) have been friends ever since childhood. Although their lives have taken different paths -- Maria was sent to Europe, Joaquin joined the military, and Manolo studied to become a bullfighter -- one thing remains the same: Manolo and Joaquin both want to marry Maria. Little does the trio know that battling husband-and-wife deities have made a high-stakes wager on the love triangle's outcome.

EDIT: Some people are misunderstanding what I said. I know The Book of Life came out first. That's why I called out Pixar for getting inspired by this movie since Disney’s Pixar made Coco.
Sorry for the large amount of cuts, blurs and pitch changes. Disney kept copyright claiming and blocking this reaction. So I had to add a lot of edits to get this video up. Thank you for understanding and I hope you still enjoy!❤️
Its OK!
Hi Rukiya
Tyyyy girl for uploading
@@hid4467 I appreciate you❤️
@@amarisadorno Heeeey!👋🏾
Another thing about this movie is that Manolo and Maria are LITERALLY soulmates!! There was a spin off show called Maya And The Three that was on Netflix for a little bit, and it was about two demigods Maya and Zats who fell in love IN THE CUTEST WAY , and Manolo and Maria are confirmed to be their reincarnations who found eachother in another life😭❤️
omggg i have to watch this
My cold dead heart broke from the cuteness💜 I’ve watched both, absolutely loved Maya and the Three
@@ryanbrielle5945 IT IS SO GOOD!!! I got my family to fall in love with it.
Omg!! I watched Maya and the three bc of how much I love the book of life and I didn’t even know this!!! 😭
I watched Maya and the three on Netflix before and when I search it up I realized Boot of life and Maya and the three are connected!
Coco actually took a lot of inspiration from this movie! The Book of Life was released in 2014, where Coco was released in 2017. I remember falling in love with this movie when it first came out!
I love both movies but only thing I don’t like is people say coco was first and then book of life go inspired by coco but it was the other way that is only thing I hate not many people know of book of life and like everyone knows the movie coco
Book of life was first
@@theresaradcliffe7071 yea I know but people think coco was first and book of life got inspired by it but it’s the other way
Ya same
Pero ... Si the book of life es terrible ... Como latinoamericana... Es la peor película que he visto que intente representar a México, sobre todo porque hace mas referencias a España que a México... Terrible.
I swear Manolo is such a gentle man, and when he sang 'love you too much' i fell for him hard.
Me too dude! His accent is what also made me love him
I know Manolo singing the "im a creep" song comes off as weird at forst lol, but when you look back on it, it really feels like its about how he never felt accepted by the town or his family for not wanting to bullfight. He doesnt belong bc hes seen as a "weirdo" by society. He feels such a gap between himself and Maria bc of their societal acceptance and status. Makes me wanna cry sometimes.was it just me tho?? Ayone ele have other theories?
i'm surprised she didn't know that song lol
I was like "oH THIs SONG" When it played I did not expect it
I love how Manolo and Joaquin are still friends even though they're rivals for Maria's love like Joaquin came to his bullfight and they somewhat supported each other
That's one of my favorite things about this movie. Manolo and Joaquin just stayed friends even though they were basically opposites, with Manolo refusing to continue with the family legacy and Joaquin becoming the town's hero like his father
She reminds me of elena de la vega from mask of zorro!!! ❤
That’s like every bestie in the world 😂😂😅
@@msk-qp6fn I thought you were going to say Elena de avalador I forgot how to spell it
I’m watching this video because I’ve never seen this movie before

Me too
I THOUGHT I WAS WIERD FOR OMG- best movie ever
"what can maria not do" i can answer that
she cant stop being the most iconic character in the whole movie
My heart when Manolo starts singing to the bull(s)! For so many years, bulls were killed by the Sanchez family for the entertainment of others. They wanted revenge, which they had every right. They didn't ask to be angered on purpose and slain. Then came Manolo with his guitar. He was the only Sanchez to give an incredibly heartfelt apology, understanding their anger. All they ever wanted was a genuine apology, someone in the family to acknowledge the injustice they had suffered. Now at last, they can rest in peace.
THE BOOK OF LIFE WAS SUCH A GREAT MOVIE!!!
I love the way you 🎉🎉❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊

Fun fact: Book of life was made before Coco and I think it is sooooooooo underrated!
Book of life is really underrated, still holds up well and I love the animation they used for the characters
What this counts as a fun fact?
@@dontknowwhattocallmyself.5144 I don’t know my stupid self put that. I was half asleep so yeah.
I personally think the Book of Life is wayyy better than Coco. Coco is good but lowkey tried to copy the Book of Life imo
@@WibbleMnIt did seem like it was trying to copy the book of life especially with the whole "after life thing" and the "forgotten" thing AND the "Wanting to be a musician" thing Fr The Book Of life walked so Coco could run and ik that it took "Inspiration" from The Book Of Life but it's more like it copied it to be honest
*Rukiya being emotional then suddenly* “ WAIT WHY IS THERE A CLOWN? “
Wait till she hears there was supposed to be a second movie, but since it didn’t sell as how it was planned to… they stopped it. Instead they made a prequel- a serie: Maya and the three. The previous life of Manolo and Maria.
Can we just appreciate how much TIME the one guy spent, setting up and lighting all those candles on the bridge before he proposed to her and she got bit? THAT is so sweet and romantic. It shows he cares about her.
A true romantic 🌹🕯️❤️😩

La Muerte and Xibalba are actually married and have, like, twelve kids. Also if you love this movie, you should check out Maya and the Three, which is connected to this same universe
Twelve kids?! Why do I find out abt this just now
@@morte2137 my friend got really into the the lore of Book of Life.
@@chylcody7804 man, bless your friend, i have to get into the lore of the book of life, i didnt know it has lore 😭

I love how Maria challenged the social norms that were placed in her town and how she defined her independence as well as being a boss b while doing it PERIOD😍
"Get that clear ring pop away from me."
"Its not my father you're marrying"
got me *dead-*
The thing I like about Maria is that she isn’t represented as a weak or harmless woman she got a strong personality 😌 and she got a strong personality 🤔
She also knows kung fu
She's like Princess Peach from The Mario Movie
@@Rainie_Daze But better with spice
Just like all the woman's at that time ,they had to be like that, strong
You said she has a strong personality two times
Xibalba and Muerte's banter is everything! My fave scene in this movie is when Muerte screamed and Xibalba came in with the wine. It's like "Ah yes, my lover is screaming my name enraged...guess it's that time again."
That scene was gold, ngl XD
Aha yes ❤
I’m watching this again and I love the Book of life so so much it’s one of my comfort movies but listening to Diego Lucas voice (Manolo) it’s is so mesmerizing and literally heavenly to me ❤
The song manolo was sisging after he got chucked by the guitar during his first bull fight was the famous song called creep by radiohead!
I think it's interesting that manolo even as a child was super brave
When Maria wanted to let the pigs out he wasn't afraid of the idea and supported it, when he was a kid his first instinct was to go head to head with a angry bore with a damn smile on his face as if he's done this before, as he grew older he was still fighting bulls like it's nothing, he was willing to fight bandits to protect the town, and was willing to die just for maria
Like this guy is super brave
La Muerte blessed his heart to always be pure and courageous when she was disguised as an old woman in need of food
I just wanna mention that the medal doesn't actually give him strength or something; it just makes him invicible/ immortal.
So that strength and power are all him.
I think it's good metaphor. He's confident with the medal and can do amazing things, but when it's gone he's scared and can't do anything. Confidence is key; you can be the most skilled person ever, but without the confidence to put those skills to use, there's practically nothing.
I do like how in the end he gained confidence and was able to fight without the medal.
but it does give him a lot of courage also
The book of life has always been my favorite movie, so so glad you got to experience it's magic
OMG THID MOVIE WAS SO GOOD RUKIYAAA! Literally I thought that bell thing with the explosion was gonna kill Manolo like how it happened with de la Cruz in coco. It was actually giving crazy deja vu.
Also that song when he was singing, “I’m a creep” is a real song called Creep by Radiohead( one of my favs)
Thanks for the reaction!!❤
May i just say how every female character in this movie is just so iconic? Like, most of the main guys look like 🏋♂ (Actually just the main 3) and the girls are all so memorable and have such iconic and distinct designs, i love all of them, they all slay.
FACTS!!
Also a bit ironic
Maria’s the literal definition of ✨girl boss✨

I'm new to this channel, but lemme just say thank you so much for reacting to my favorite movie of all time. When it came out I was hoping I could gush over it with other people, but at that time it didn't do well. Extremely happy that it's now getting the recognition it deserves
I was 7 when this movie came out
I watched it once and didnt forget it I begged my parents for years to find it again it had left such a impact
I got to see it again when I was 11 due to it being on netflix
We eventually got it on vudu remains one of my favorites
This movie holds a dear place to me because the creator also did my fav show as a kid "El tigre: the adventures of Manny Rivera" you can even see the main characters at the start of the story as background characters ♡
It was the first cartoon I saw with mexicans characters potrayed in a good light ♡
He also did Maya and The Three. I believe La Muerte and Xibalba have a small cameo in the series. (Manny too, but in the opening sequence) ♡

I think the song could have been good if he didn't do the chorus honestly
Because the lyrics FIT Manolo except for "I'm a creep" however to his father he is a weirdo, he doesnt belong and he IS in love with Maria. But I totally agree.

@@claragemheart581 exactly so much better than coco! ( no offense Disney ) coco May have better animation and what not, but story wise, cmon… BOOK OF LIFEEEEE
also same💕
Same!!!
So glad you reacted to this movie. It gets overlooked by Coco so often and Disney totally stole the themes and concept from this much smaller studio, which is a terrible shame. Disney also tried to copyright the phrase "Dia de los Muertos" for merchandise when Coco came out and got publicly lambasted for it. Book of Life also had a strong team of Hispanic writers, directors and producers from the start who wanted to make a fun movie that reflected their culture, while Disney seemed to shuffle together a handful of cultural consultants only after some of the backlash hit the public. And don't get me wrong, Coco is a lovely film, but it still comes off as stereotypically Disney and the behavior during production revealed that the film, regardless of good writing, truly only existed to make more money by exploiting cultures that the executives were not themselves a part of. Book of Life, of course, was crafted to make money too, but there was significantly more focus from the team working on it to tell a Mexican story by people from Hispanic heritage and that shows in the final product.
TLDR;
This movie doesn't get nearly enough love and Disney is a cooperate hydra that will do anything for money.
Couldn’t have said it better
the culture of Hispanics (in this case, Mexico because of the holiday) is not so popular in cartoons, and as soon as it starts to be used in the plot of these cartoons, the cries about plagiarism immediately begin ((((these two beautiful animated masterpieces have a DIFFERENT plot, but the same concept, so what the hell is this а plagiarism? You probably also call all films about Christmas plagiarism of each other?
@@apelsinpark Last I checked, the focus on a main character who loves music and is raised in a family who hates it and sees musicians as lesser, has nothing to do with the holiday. To say nothing of going on a spirit journey to the afterlife and finding family members long past that also had a love of music and gave it up for the sake of the family as a whole. Earning approval from a parental figure through being yourself has nothing to do with Dia de los Muertos either. Sure there are differences, but the core values of the main characters beings so specifically similar rubs me the wrong way.
@@apelsinpark from what i remember reading, The Book of Life was presented to Disney in its early stages and they rejected it...and then started working on Coco, sooooooo idk. take that as you will
@@MonsterRat1000 source: trust me bro

I LOVE THE BOOK OF LIFE!! I had it on DVD when I was little, and it raised me! My Spanish teacher was also named Maria Sanchez, and my 4th grade Spanish class watched this movie and we all had churros! :)
Oh thats amazing!!

12:00 lol. So they’ve been to 8 bars, love the music reference leading up to this line
This is a little cute thing I found in this movie but at 27:30 to 27:34 when Manolo is seen coming back from the dead there is a heart shaped light around him showing that the love he has for Maria is so strong. It’s soooo cute❤❤😊
I’m actually surprised that the book of life is so underrated. It’s a good film and a good story
I love her sense of humor
OMG!! IM SO GLAD YOU WATCHED THIS RUKIYA ❤❤❤❤ I LITERALLY LOVE THIS MOVIE😂
1) First of all it’s cat- how can I ignore cat? ITS. A. CAT! :D 💕
2) This color and styling looks so good on her!
3) This is honestly the best Guillermo del Toro movie and it deserves respect.
4) The humor is absolutely spot on. Everything that they made for comedy actually works and is funny.
5) THE SOUNDTRACK! The soundtrack is amazing and is on par with the Tarzan and Lion King soundtracks! Every song absolutely hits. I’m still upset we never got the full mariachi version of “If you think I’m sexy”, and the “I love you too much” scene was pure perfection.
6) Idk if it’s true but in my head canon, I like how Manolo doesn’t have a mustache/any facial hair. All the other “manly masculine family manly mans” all have mustaches. Meanwhile Manolo wants to be himself even if it isn’t what a stereotypical man should be. He cares more about following his heart vs suppressing it to please a public image. It really makes him stand out and show he’s different from everyone else.
7) The voice cast did an absolutely amazing job. Ron Pearlman as Xibalba and Ice Cube as the Candle Maker was so unexpected but they worked so well for their characters! They’re one of my favorites from this movie :)
8) I absolutely love that Joaquin isn’t a villain but instead just has more of a friendly rivalry/competition with Manolo that Xibalba makes more serious- he thickens the issues between the two when before Manolo and Joaquin just argued like brothers, and when they reunite again they’re excited like brothers missing eachother because they truly are brothers. When Manolo died, he was trying really hard not to cry when he had to break the news to Maria. You can hear his voice crack and he had to look down, close his eyes, and shake his head to stop his watery eyes. He actually wants Maria to mourn, but her father pushes the issues of her hurrying up and marrying Joaquin; Joaquin even told the General, who is Maria’s father: “General please now is not the tim-“ and the general cuts him off motions for Joaquin to stop talking which Joaquin respects because it’s an elder and the father of the girl he’s trying to marry. He even tried telling Maria she didn’t have to accept the proposal after Manolo’s death but she also cuts him off before he can finish talking. He knew it wasn’t right to take advantage of the situation and he doesn’t want Maria marrying him if she doesn’t want to. You see him hestitate when he wanted to mourn over Manolo and at the alter when Maria says “for San Angel, I do”. Even before we physically saw grown Maria, Joaquin compliments Manolo in his first bull fight before he goes to the arena that he’s happy that Manolo finally took bull fighting seriously because Joaquin knew Manolo was struggling with his identity and how it differs from the family legacy vs Joaquin who looked up to his father and his sacrifice, follow his father’s foot steps, and be exactly like him- as great as a hero as his dad if not better.
Joaquin and Manolo were talking and even teasing eachother before the race to win Maria as adults:
Joaquin: “We got some pretty big shadows to fill”
Manolo: “Ha…huuuuge.”
Joaquin: “Hey, brother, may the best man win Maria”
You can hear it in his voice he doesn’t want to be competing with Manolo cause he cares about him, and impressing Maria is bittersweet since it hurts Manolo. Everything between Manolo and Joaquin was so heartfelt- they never had any ill will towards eachother even if they were both trying to win the same girl over. They easily could have made Joaquin vengeful and petty, but instead he respects both Maria and Manolo’s decision since he wants them to be happy, and he still loves them both. The trio stayed together regardless of what happened and they all still love, respect, support and care for eachother 🖤❤️💙
I will never comprehend how this movie is so criminally underrated.
Wow that must have taken a long time to type
No kidding 😂
8:41 STAWP IM ROLLING ON THE FLOOR RN THIS IS SO FUNNY TO ME 😭
This movie is an artistic masterpiece! I have the art book for this movie with an introduction by Guillermo Del Toro. They used polygon themes when designing the worlds to make it so iconic. The land of the living is designed with squares, the land of the remembered was designed with circles, and the land of the forgotten was designed with triangles. Super creative and genius art techniques to make lands vibrant, different, and so memorable!
I loved this movie as a kid! Maria was my most favourite character, and her lines are iconic!
I loved Maria because i relate to her a lot Haha XD
I love this movie, and I've always watched it in Spanish, so it surprised me that here they call her "la muerte" and in the Spanish dub is "la Catrina"
real! I watched this in spanish but my brother always watched it in english because he doesn’t know english and i was like “😮”
La Catrina is her actual name in Mexican/South American folklore lol
@@georgiedenburrito87 Catrina* yeah I know, what surprised me is that they didn't call her that in English, since la muerte is not even in English either
6 months late, but the name change is more of that La Muerte is based on Santa Muerte, or La Catrina, a folk saint who is supposed to be a matriarch of the Dead with catholic and native influence (I think from the Mexica deity Mictecaccihautl)
