I like how the movie and the manga succeed in different ways, they just focused on different stuff, feels like a remake! Also really liked the message from the movie: “don’t become stuck in the past forever”.
It looks like the manga have a lot of cheesy scenes with the two main characters and Hanashiro seems to smile and laugh a lot, which is good, but I really liked her stoic kind of personality in the movie, and i'm so glad that it was just the two of them during the firework festival, this just makes the movie even better for me.
My friends watched the movie version and they had SO many questions and things they didn't like that much about it, but they absolutely loved these cut scenes you talked about in this video XD Seems their main issues were how much emotions Hanashiro and Tono showed, or didn't show
Tell your friend glad that they enjoyed my video and also thank for commenting and giving the vid a shot. I'm in the same ball park especially with hanashiro, she was a lot edgier and energetic in the light or the manga. The movie toned her down and made her more into a kuudere.
I read the manga after watching the movie and I'm really dissapointed that a lot of key things were cut. But I can't get too mad since the studio that made this movie "CLAP Animation" is a small studio and has only worked on a few projects. I wish one day they could redo this movie but make it into a series since it would work easier.
Yup got to hand it to the studio even though they are pretty small they did amazing in the art and animation department. I doubt they'll make a redo or even a series at this point since the general people who watched it are left satisfied and had a good experience without knowing the source material, and it won some awards according to IMDB.
@@dogahon Yea, the ending was alright but I kind of wish we could have seen Tono and Anzu reunite with their friends. I saw a lot of people say this could have worked as a series but I'm guessing CLAP wanted to do something like Makoto Shinkai's movies and have a boy and girl type story to make more money. But Hey, it did get positive reviews and I liked it so I'm happy with what we got but it could have been a bit better.
After reading the novel and rewatching the movie, i realized just how much they changed from the novel. Seeing Kaoru and Anzu from the movie seems like they're different characters compared to the novel.
Me and my GF watched this in Thailand last spring. She came out extremely pissed due to the plot that doesn’t make any sense and how fucked up the pacing was. For me, I thought it was okay…it’s a very generic anime movie though. Then I found the existence of the LN, so I bought it, assuming they must’ve cut a lot of stuff. Oh boy, I wasn’t wrong. They literally removed Kawasaki, the side character that would definitively help developing the relationship between Tono and Anzu in a much naturally way than what the movie portrayed. And the character of Anzu…at least in the LN we can clearly see why she changed, from a close-minded, cold and harsh character to your-every-day lovable waifu. In the movie, her character stays the same until the end. Anzu’s confession at the train station just coming out of nowhere. Speaking of which, the freaking phone coming out of nowhere and somehow you’re able to text from the tunnel inside out? Honestly, they should’ve keep the “permit to love”, even if the messages they’re trying the tell are the same, the uniqueness of the LN is just incomparable. This movie has a lot of potential. Imagine if it were in the right hand, we could’ve seen something that on-par with the Shinkai films…instead we got a rushed, nonsensical and generic anime film. At least the art styles are pretty neat though. Anyway, love your videos. May I suggest doing the comparison between the LN and movies called “Kimi o Aishita Hitori no Boku e (To Me, The One Who Loved You)” and its counterpart “Boku ga Aishita Subete no Kimi e (To Every You I’ve Loved Before)”. To summarize, it’s about multiverse shenanigans. Both films can be watched in any order as you desired, yet they’re connected to each other and I think they’re pretty interesting. Edit: I also love the OST. Eill was truly the right choice for this movie.
Yup, I do have to agree with the things you've pointed out, from removing Kawasaki's involvement in the narrative, Anzu's personality staying the same over the years, and the amazing art, shots, symbolisms, framing of the scenes and the OST by eill was 10/10 for me. Here some clarity and how I viewed the texting and phone appearing out of nowhere. They somewhat showed how texting would work when you enter the urashima tunnel but I feel like that needed more fleshing out because it probably wasn't enough to convince me that's how it would work. And the phone popping out of nowhere, from my pov, Tono throwing it inside the tunnel was a metaphor for cutting all his ties with the outside world in order to get Karen back thinking that would solve all his problems, but the urashima tunnel had different plans and made it reappear saying that this phone is what matters the most right now because it's the only thing that connects him with Anzu the person that matters the most right now in his life and I would say his friends but the movie didn't develop Kawasaki and his homie Kaga so rip. And ty for the suggestion, I actually watched the two movies like 3 months ago it made me depressed is all I can say, but if I read the novel it might change it and make me even more depressed lmao we shall see. Ty for giving your time in typing this long comment about your thoughts and opinions man really appreciated

I'm just very curious how they will settle with legalities, after mysteriously disappearing for years lmao, but that's the whole point of fiction storytelling
In terms of identity, they are still the same age as before they disappeared. In the end, they plan to leave the local area and live in Tokyo. The boy will live as the girl's assistant. This is the ending of the story.
In Japan, people like them disappear all the time (boys run away from home, mangaka and other famous people take long breaks and hide from public eye) but it's not like they get their documents or properties confiscated. They just have to go to the police and explain why they have been away but not what they did in the meantime. So Kaoru can claim that he run away due to a fight with his dad (partially true) and found a job in another town where he has been living ever since. He is not suspected of a crime or anything so the police won't look further.
The movie had moments that felt slow and others that raced by. It was good but could have been better. Still, I loved it and might even read the light novel.
They should’ve adapted the source material better because although I loved the movie it really did feel incomplete and I think if it had more in it it would’ve been received a lot better by audiences

dude, can you tell me something, at the end of the anime she meets the protagonist after 13 years, in those 13 years she didn't date anyone? Did she wait for him, or did she have affairs and boyfriends but always thinking about the protagonist? In the film she says "I've always been thinking about you" referring to these 13 years, however it is not mentioned if she had a relationship with someone, or never had anyone and always waited for the guy to come back from the tunnel, do you know if the novel or manga says something about her 13 years?
The novel and the manga did not have any mention of Anzu being in a relationship with anyone, the 13 years she was occupied with her manga and Touno in the back of her mind. The manga and the novel just gave us a big time skip on Anzu's part. Girl waited 13 years for her highschool sweetheart.
i'm pretty sure Anzu's age gap with Tonou is only 8 years, the extra 5 years were her and him both being in the tunnel while she is running back to Tonou. Cause if you think about it Tonou was running in the tunnel for 14+ hours (which is a long ass distance to run/walk btw) and then when he turned back he passed out.
Actually the age gap is only 5 years. She spend the other 8 years in the tunnel and yes, she didn't date anyone in the meantime. By the end of the story, he's physically 17, she's physically 22 and they are both legally 30.

In the LN, he actively tried to take her with him even after the talk and the “Permit of Love” scene where he realizes it’s okay to love himself and allow himself to be loved. He holds Karen’s hand and tries to leave with her, but she tells him that she can’t because “you know how some types of fish can’t live in different types of water?” I can’t remember it in detail, but it was a very emotional scene and even though Kaoru kept resisting and trying, Karen pushed him back into the tunnel so that he could go home. @@Black_Dragon_Official_Channel you're welcome! I think it's more like a manga before the movie but I've heard that it's not finished yet so yeah. Have a lovely day!
His reaction was because of how worthless his father considered him and his sister as he didn't care to tell his son that he was dating another woman, even more so with the intention of marrying her and move out of town. Also moving to Tokyo ment that he wasn't going to see Anzu again and that he could not use the tunnel to save Karen. But it's true that Kaoru didn't want to move on, it's the whole point of him entering the tunnel. He needed to hear from his sister's mouth that he had permission to forgive himself and make himself a new life and happiness.
