You can buy an OBD2 reader on Amazon for $15 and DashCommand Pro for $5 and have literally the same thing. I have DashCommand and that's exactly what AutoMeter's app is.
I read the comments about it being a $1m car, 1 of 25, super rare, super valuable, no gravel, no dirt, no dips, no going off the tarmac. But I'm left with one thought: what is the value of a $1m rally car that can't (won't!) be driven like a rally car ever again? It becomes the heartbreaking equivalent of stanced, cambered, useless show cars that get driven like they're made of glass. I'd prefer a $45k replica of a Stratos that I could actually drive. But I have a personal rule: I can't and won't own a car I can't or won't drive (like it was meant to be driven). That's both a functional requirement of my socio-economic position in the world that just happens to fall in line with my fundamental beliefs in how life (and cars) are supposed to be.
I appreciate your comment, and your opinion firstly. This is an age old argument, but these things are not still with us today, and in such pristine condition, by being thrashed on a regular basis. It warms my heart that there are people that still rally these things in historic competition and so forth, but I also appreciate the hell out of those who keep them as 'as new' museum pieces. We need both types of owner frankly. One to show off the car for public appreciation on a regular basis, and one to make damn sure that their's won't get wrapped around a tree or any other rally obstacle anytime soon. Besides, if the car is yours it's yours. You do with it as you please. The argument for otherwise is a bit too much like the argument that rich people should just give up their money. Yours IS YOURS. And so it damn well should be.
@@jasonmcmillan4373 I agree. I understand the other side of it here too. SOME cars deserve to be preserved as engineering art. Just like any famous painting or sculpture, some are a cut above the rest and we as car enthusiasts need to ensure their legacy endures. The Lancia Stratos has earned its throne, and deserves its rest. Taken out to stretch its legs and show its still got it, but doesn't need to prove its mettle ever again. Few cars earn such reverence, but these have.
Who the hell, that is into cars for a living, does not know about the Lancia Stratos? This is THE rally legend of all times. This car made Audi, Ford, Renault, etc step up their game big time in development and HP. Know your Lancia Stratos history or give up reviewing cars for a living Matt. I'm not being harsh. I'm being nicely serious .
Not all of us are obsessed with driving on dirt. I like dirt driving, but that’s not everything. & you shouldn’t insult someone that is able to love cars so much he gets paid to cruise em?
A Lancia Stratos on the Smoking Tire channel ? My life is complete. I don’t even care if it wasn’t geared for the road, that Dino engine deserves a Grammy music award. What a legend ! Lancia was truly one of the best automakers in the world.
There are days I live vicariously through you. And this was definitely one of those days. Thanks for sharing your experience with us! I have yet to see one of those in person, I really hope I do (even a replica would be fine with me). I always bought the Stratos car in any racing game I played because of the cool styling and rally heritage. I am going to go ahead and assume many others have as well.
Rally cars were configured in many different ways relative to the race/purpose. There were different gear boxes for top speed, an example being the stratos that ran Daytona24. The cars could also be set up for gravel or tarmac. This Stratos currently has hill climb gears from its last event. There hasn't been a need to change them, so we haven't.
I guess it's because of the value. The street version of the car sells for up to $500,000. I couldn't find a auction price for the race version. I imagine it could be double that.
Crazy Horse: IT IS WORTH A MILLION DOLLARS. It is also geared for tight rally stages in Italy etc. like Amalfi. Ever driven there? You could not go over 60 in ANY car.
Beautiful, who didn’t build a model of this in their youth. But now that I’ve seen it in action I’ll never have to look at a pic or vid of one again. Thanks for that, lol.
Every time I️ see a video of a stratos I️ feel like there’s always something so unique that the driver notices. It makes me want the car so much more every time
Hi Amesie, yes very surprising. I viewed the results from an historic rally here in the uk over the weekend with two 96's in the rally. They both were in the bottom of the results. I have to conclude that Eric "on the roof" Carlsson was an incredible driver. mark

Saabs success was mainly on Snow and bad gravel. Stratos was made for Italy's and French tarmac/gravel events, it wasnt developed for snow covered sweeden. WRC combined wasn't that important, but individual victories. Lancia wanted to win on their home turfs.
Matt didn’t know this car was freaking good in Rally!!!!! Really Matt!!!! Also, the windshield was so curved that it actually tempered the vision of anyone in the car!!
Man what a car, you have the coolest job in the world. You’re very lucky guy, been following you since garage 419 before I could legally drive mind you. Always enjoy your content. Finally was able to obtain my first sports car I got an e36 325is with an s50 swap. When I started watching you all I had access to was my moms mini van. Seems like you pathed the way for a lot of youtubers.
Such an awesome piece of rallying history! Believe it or not, there is actually one of the road-going versions of this beauty locally here in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Some of my gearhead friends have actually seen and taken photos of it in yellow-and-green livery.
Your Right I Can't Understand How The Cars Top Speed Is Only 50-55MPH The Road Version Is At Least 3 Times As Faster. This Video Is A Total And Utter Waste Of My Time. But A Nice Looking Very Slow Lancia Stratos. They Need To Test Drive The Standard Road Going Version. I Guess Everyones Allowed There Own Point Of View 110%.
Oh c'mon it's not that bad! The soundtrack alone is awesome. Let alone the bit with the cop. But here are a couple of remedies for ya, hopefully you haven't already seen 'em, & have a nice day: ua-cam.com/video/tBGzCdG3fhQ/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/KHgD0wJGcR0/v-deo.html
Every time I see one of these, I think of Billy Colemam. We saw him in the Stratos in Raheen, Athenry, for the Galway Rally. Christmas 76. He came through way faster than anyone else. Can't believe you name checked him here.
Was it even that good at rallying? From where do you think it got it's reputation? Dear Lord, do some research before you make yourself look like a fool. It won the WRC three times in a row from 1974 to 76. 17 WRC event victories.
This is better than a Bugatti Veyron. This is and was my dream car ever since I was a teen. If you don't have a million you can still get one. There's a company called Lister Bell that makes perfect recreations in the UK with Alfa Romeo engines in them. This car was designed by the great Marcello Ghandini who also designed the Countach while he was working at Bertone. Thanks.
garf117 Well yeah with a set up for Greece and Corsica and France tarmac stages with lot's of tight corners and not enough space to actually go fast between them. Though it's a rally car the set up can be changed.
Considering it's a rally car, as MrGreen said it probably had these gears swapped in for a particularly tight rally! Must be a lot of fun offroad but, yeah, not going to risk this car...
I just saw this car in the background of an old "Chasing Classic Cars" episode. Wayne Carini was at an Amelia Island concours show with a Cobra, and this was in the background.
That dashlink seems alright. Thats the first advertised item on here i can actually use. I don't wear tacky oversized bling watches, i dont have sweaty balls and i dont smoke cigars. Good product.
Most impressive mismatch between car and road ever, but i agree.. If you get the chance to drive a Stratos, you drive it :) Knowing the issues you often have with older cars and hearing the talk about the gearbox in the 131 has me afraid of what will happen, but for me - a guy who was a kid when the 131s raced - i'm SO excited for it! More so than for the Stratos for some reason :)
I usually kinda eye-roll at the adds at the beginning of most of Matt's videos, but I don't mind them because the man has to get paid somehow. But in all honesty, that Autometer link thing actually looks really dope. I kinda want one now lol Also, holy Jesus balls, a Stratos? Hell yes!
Awesome! I am actually surprised you haven't driven it yet! I envy you. You were definitely due! To drive the Stratos and barrel down the road... Amazing! You gotta do the hill climb is where you feel it! I watched Chris Harris' invitational passenger drive with Master drivers from Pirelli and then I knew that this is an amazing ride.
The Stratos O37 Delta and the Fulvia are 4 of the most beautiful cars ever built oh the things i would do to get my hands on one of them! Lancia PLEASE come back and start making proper rally cars again please come back and build proper Lancias again
OMG a Stratos!!!! Dream garage car. One of the best sounding cars of all time. If you want the sound of this car but cant shell out the cash, get an Alfa Romeo with the Busso V6. Sounds similar with headers and a free flow exhaust. Better yet about this video, it is not another Porsche. Unique, quirky, beautiful...love it. That garage....WOW. Hope he has a go in the O37 and the S4 I saw in there. Insane beasts, better than any modern supercar by miles.
If you get a chance to review anything else in that garage, please rent out a little twisty road. Would have loved to see and hear the car rip out of some 2nd gear corners. Thanks for providing a very rare and enjoyable drive.
It is so sad this wonderful machine was castrated with a concours gearbox. You can't get dead bugs on the precious pain, can't break the law when on installation rides. The gearbox is not reason enough though that someone would dislike the video.
'Was it even that good at rallying?' Matt, it dominated the wrc in the mid to late 70s.
Holy fuckitty there is a Stratos, S4, Delta Integrale, Fulvia, Rally 037 AND a Beta Corsa in the same room!!
...dude has my dream garage,
131 Abarth, Alfa Giulia Junior GTA, Mk1 Escort, Ford GT40, Jag E-Type, Falcon 500(I think), Porsche 356...
Can you review their entire garage?!? Man there was a lot in the garage that looks spectacular!
Im agree!
iLupi this footage is a month old ...
Looking at that Fiat 131 Abarth in the background and I felt my dick get hard.
Please. thats a dream garage
He did review more cars from this garage. Look at his instagram account.
Geared really low... Owner saw Matt's other videos and set his car into "mechanical valet mode" ;-)
Stig Msr exactly 😉
One of the coolest looking car ever in my opinion.
I clicked on this:
1) To see an incredible, unique and historic car
and
2) To see Matt attempt to fit into it..
WHOAAAAA a Lancia?!? We are not worthy, we are not worthy!
Also cool Dash Link, but whoa!
Lancia Stratos!
You can buy an OBD2 reader on Amazon for $15 and DashCommand Pro for $5 and have literally the same thing. I have DashCommand and that's exactly what AutoMeter's app is.
UnlinealHand yes, I paid about £6 off eBay for one and use torque pro app that is about £5, but I got it on a sale for 1 pence way before I needed it.
Yea one of the most useless greatest sounding famous losing cars ever. We are crazy aren't we.
John D ummm....the stratos won a few WRC championships.......
The car isn't a loser. The drivers weren't worthy.

*TRIGGERED*
Mad Vlad from Leningrad and he calls himself a car guy.. sad man.
Der Wunderwuzzi omfg Right! Glad someone else said it. It's only a goddamn legend

Plus, god it’s gotta be fun like that
Well surely the fact that it’s crazily slow on the road means there’s a desperate need to re-Gear it?
This is the beginning of the best week of One Takes I've ever seen. Well sorted supercharged C5, Lancia Stratos...keep them coming Matt!
10:08
Matt: "Wow, look at this hole"
John: "NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NOOOOO!"
Trying to give the poor guy a heart attack. hahaha
Strange though, for a RALLY car.
I guess it's because of the value. The street version of the car sells for up to $500,000. I couldn't find a auction price for the race version. I imagine it could be double that.
It can't handle gravel. A great addition to the 60 mph top speed
Crazy Horse: IT IS WORTH A MILLION DOLLARS. It is also geared for tight rally stages in Italy etc. like Amalfi. Ever driven there? You could not go over 60 in ANY car.
No no no no no no no lol
Long time follower of TST; have PRAYED for a Stratos or 037 for ever!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!
Beautiful, who didn’t build a model of this in their youth. But now that I’ve seen it in action I’ll never have to look at a pic or vid of one again. Thanks for that, lol.
Your opening reaction in the stratos is exactly how I would feel
Every time I️ see a video of a stratos I️ feel like there’s always something so unique that the driver notices. It makes me want the car so much more every time
It still amazes me that the Saab type 96 "competed" with these in the same races..
they could really shift, surprisingly quick actually
Hi Amesie, yes very surprising. I viewed the results from an historic rally here in the uk over the weekend with two 96's in the rally. They both were in the bottom of the results. I have to conclude that Eric "on the roof" Carlsson was an incredible driver. mark

ChaosphereIX what does that mean? Gears, directions, or?
"Was it good at rallying?"
For shame sir, for shame!!!
(Only kidding, best channel on all the youtubes.)
The sound. Oh the sound. I'll be hearing it for the next week and enjoy every moment of it. Now if only I wasn't several months late on seeing this.
Loved the Stratos since I was 3yrs old playing with the matchbox car version. I'm in love!
Your excitement is completely infectious. Dude needs to have a mini dirt track with that much Group B goodness around.
there is millions of dollars worth of car in that garage. None will ever see dirt again...to valuable.
Originally they were geared for 120 in rally trim about 140 in road , but suffered lift on the front. They were very tricky on the limit handling
Matt didn’t know this car was freaking good in Rally!!!!! Really Matt!!!!

Matt you gotta review that entire mans garage. So many cool cars.
The sound is not affected by the open window at all.
Simply wonderful. I've only ever owned an HPE but Lancia are just effortlessly cool and the Stratos is about as good as it gets.
ua-cam.com/video/mXgWWNJVdYA/v-deo.html
I actually appreciate and respect his hesitation and actually telling Matt to not drive through the gravel. Incredible collector piece.
Disagree. It's the way it's meant to be driven - it's a rally car and it's a shame to putz at 55 on a straight paved road on it
Such an awesome piece of rallying history! Believe it or not, there is actually one of the road-going versions of this beauty locally here in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Some of my gearhead friends have actually seen and taken photos of it in yellow-and-green livery.
So glad im not over weight
Ive fit comfortably in every exotic & formula car I've driven
Life is good
Beautiful as this car is, this video is the automotive equivalent of watching paint dry.

what a Legend!! just before group B!!! great video Matt!!!
from Spain

It won the WRC three times in a row from 1974 to 76. 17 WRC event victories.
Thank you
the guy is a moron
I had a Italia livery Stratos model when I was young. I've always enjoyed seeing the Stratos video since that time!
atuttaskinvsk.weebly.com/uploads/1/7/2/2/17226442/5948822_orig.jpg
Awesome 👍🏻 the Lancia Delta gen.1 and the Stratos are the two cars that got me hooked on rally back in the day when I was a young lad !😝
That Lancia 037 is the most prettiest rally car ever made!
This is better than a Bugatti Veyron. This is and was my dream car ever since I was a teen. If you don't have a million you can still get one. How the hell you manage to fit in a Stratos....?????
there is room for two people in a Stratos, and nothing else
I think its about time Matt considers making some healthy food choices...pretty easy to drop 50 to 75 lbs.
...ball powder for lube...
Jesus, that collection is amazing
The stratos is like a mythical beast! They’re so cool!
My favourite journalist in my favourite car. Great vid.
Yay Matt! Glad i got your attention on this one. Now you need to go drive an 86 Delta S4.
The sound of Lancia cars, especially Stratos and Delta, like an Italian opera. Bella machiné
the gearing! haha unreal man. That engine sounds buttery smooooth
* Stratos sees gravel * 😛 “No, that’s too much” 😞
One of the most beautiful Cars.
And Lancia made many beautiful cars
There are so few good videos of Stratos... es? I'm so happy you made this!
Top speed of 60? Today I learned my civic will outrun a Stratos... Eventually...
garf117 Well yeah with a set up for Greece and Corsica and France tarmac stages with lot's of tight corners and not enough space to actually go fast between them. Though it's a rally car the set up can be changed.
MrGreenAKAguci00 You're totally right man. Just let me have the dream though!!! Let me live in the stars!!!
Considering it's a rally car, as MrGreen said it probably had these gears swapped in for a particularly tight rally! Must be a lot of fun offroad but, yeah, not going to risk this car...
garf117 Which would you rather have though? A Stratos or a ecobox?
krocialblack see above comment
Won multiple WRC constructors titles.........yes they did OK!
You should’ve film the car with everything open. This thing looks amazing with all the doors open
Sick car. Also, sick device you reviewed at the beginning.
Hey Matt, will you changing gears involve Man Touching?
iLupi lots of it in this.
Ahh a top gear fan?
Paul Laurance of course. Had to make the reference. XD
It seems odd seeing one in the US, such a great car
your smile in the first 10 seconds assured me this was gonna be a good one, Matt!
I just saw this car in the background of an old "Chasing Classic Cars" episode. Wayne Carini was at an Amelia Island concours show with a Cobra, and this was in the background.
"Where do you get tires for this thing?" "England"
Haha, like just some unspecified English company that makes vintage Stratos rally wheels
3:01, Was that a Lancia Beta Group 5? Sick!
Filip Lenz yes it was!
it makes 100HP up until 4k rpm
Ben Kruidbos a arty
Amarth
That dashlink seems alright. Thats the first advertised item on here i can actually use. I don't wear tacky oversized bling watches, i dont have sweaty balls and i dont smoke cigars. Good product.
One of the most epic cars to date.
MORE GROUP B CARS PLZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cruising to the store at 5500 rpm and 35 mph and then oh well I guess I'm strapping my groceries to the roof! Such a cool car though
Most impressive mismatch between car and road ever, but i agree.. If you get the chance to drive a Stratos, you drive it :)
Knowing the issues you often have with older cars and hearing the talk about the gearbox in the 131 has me afraid of what will happen, but for me - a guy who was a kid when the 131s raced - i'm SO excited for it! More so than for the Stratos for some reason :)
For once I decided to see what your ad was about before skipping it. I need this. I need this right the fuck now.
I usually kinda eye-roll at the adds at the beginning of most of Matt's videos, but I don't mind them because the man has to get paid somehow. But in all honesty, that Autometer link thing actually looks really dope. I kinda want one now lol
Also, holy Jesus balls, a Stratos? Hell yes!
I started drooling and nearly ruined my laptop. Thanks Matt
He has some serious kit in that garage, please say you're reviewing the 037 and S4! Those twin charged engines sound mental.
This "John" guy sounds like a pretty cool guy. Especially letting a stranger drive around a completely irreplaceable piece of history
What a collection!
The Stratos O37 Delta and the Fulvia are 4 of the most beautiful cars ever built oh the things i would do to get my hands on one of them! Lancia PLEASE come back and start making proper rally cars again please come back and build proper Lancias again
That engine sounds best when uncorked-no mufflers. For road use use a 3:'08:1 rear gear set. They need to bring these back big time. So cool.
0:42
For three consecutive years winning the World Rally Championship, a legend
This is one car I would've loved to seen at a tight technical track
whats the redline? it sounds pretty relaxed cruising at 55 at redline...
This car is so cool looking. Who else saw that GT in the most desirable color combo at 2:05?
OMG a Stratos!!!! Dream garage car. One of the best sounding cars of all time. If you want the sound of this car but cant shell out the cash, get an Alfa Romeo with the Busso V6. Sounds similar with headers and a free flow exhaust. Better yet about this video, it is not another Porsche. Unique, quirky, beautiful...love it. That garage....WOW. Hope he has a go in the O37 and the S4 I saw in there. Insane beasts, better than any modern supercar by miles.
glad you didnt find one, you don't deserve one
jesus christ that garage...... it is stacked with the best lancia models ever
@SmokingTire, did you shoot this near Amelia Island, FL?
I am here mainly to see if Matt fits in hahaha. Love you Matt.
I prefer the look of that Lancia 037 in the garage. That really is a rare car.
The best looking rally car Ever!
Everything I read says top speed of 144mph. Is this gearing specific to the Group 4 works cars?
I hope this car gives you inspiration for your safari build Matt.
If you get a chance to review anything else in that garage, please rent out a little twisty road. Would have loved to see and hear the car rip out of some 2nd gear corners. Thanks for providing a very rare and enjoyable drive.
Matt's laugh when he stalls the Stratos the second time. Lmao, priceless.
Best day at work ever.
Dream garage car right here, along with that Alfa GTA they've got.
Matt's face when it starts is priceless
It is so sad this wonderful machine was castrated with a concours gearbox. You can't get dead bugs on the precious pain, can't break the law when on installation rides. The gearbox is not reason enough though that someone would dislike the video.
Dirk Steffen What does this even mean?
They obviously had a variety of gearboxes to choose from and this ran it's last stage on a rally which had loads of corners and not many straights.
Off the top of my head, Stratos has a short wheelbase, 84" but early Jeeps, CJ2a, 3A, 3B, and possibly CJ5 had 80" wheelbase.
Matt I hate to sound ignorant but what is a dogleg first or dogleg trans you mentioned.
doesit go100 it means first is down and to the left. 2nd sits where you would normally have 1st in most normal H-pattern boxes.
Dan Hayston ahhhh thats different never seen that pretty cool.Ok thanks man.
I'm a bit more of a Lancia Delta fan, but the Stratos is fucking cool as hell!
Was that low gearing the last surviving set from the previous owner?
I think it takes more time to shift 4 times to get to 60mph than it does to have a gearbox that can do it in 1 shift..
