Honestly one of the saddest, subtle things I've seen in Stardew is that so many of the parents/guardians have tiny bedrooms (or none at all in the case of Pam) in comparison to their children. Like Jodi and Kent's tiny thing, or even George and Evelyn. While I'm not sure how intentional it is, shows a lot of sacrifice coming from the adults to their children.
While there is that whole super common perception about how living spaces should be allotted, some parents just actually prefer small rooms. Further in regards to 'sacrifice' - children did not choose to be born, and with some exceptions in extremely unfortunate situations parents did choose to have children. Taking care of your kid as best you can is baseline, not a sacrifice, and the fact that a lot of people IRL fall short of that is a bad thing. That isn't to say children should be ungrateful, but more to point out how little control over decisions like that children have - they can't even leave if they dislike their home like say a roommate could - and that a parent doing right by their child is how it should be rather than the other way around. Hell, runaways are often dragged right back even when their homes and parents are absolutely awful and they're given almost no say in who they wish to live with in divorce proceedings and so on.
I think smaller bedrooms are ok because for the parents, the whole house can be their private space. They spent most of the time in the living room while sleeping in the bedroom, most of the time have an entire room designated to their hobbies. While for children everything is in one room, hence needing more space.
He said "Hello, famer." the first time I talked to him and I like to imagine he just forgot my name and panicked. "Hello... (Wait, what did Jody say their name was again? Oh crap I forgot uh uhhh) ...farmer."
I honestly like Kent A LOT during my gameplays. When you give him a liked gift, he just have such a sweet expression. And I feel like he’s very reserved but everytime I see him I can’t help but talk to him or give him something. As you said, he doesn’t really have any friends in the valley so I feel like the game relies on you, the farmer, to make him feel a bit more comfortable in Pelican Town
@@Leapalot yeah! And I don’t even like beer nor do I usually hang out with 40 something men so he really surprised me as being one of my favorite characters
The best thing was when I brought him to the movies to watch a light hearted animated movie and he was so happy :D He said how this made him feel better and I almost cried :')
I think that they probably taunted Kent with the warp totems, or perhaps even gave them to him and said that if he used them, they would kill some of his fellow war prisoners. Knowing that escape was so close for him, but that he couldn’t take it, might be why he hates warp totems; they were essentially used to torture him.
I could imagine the totems to be another way of torture in the POW camp. Maybe not outright giving them to him but in taunting him with a way home, or getting him to do something with a false promise of a totem. Alternatively, if Kent was a sort of leader in the camp, they may have given it to him in hopes he'd use it and abandon his companions, which he couldn't bring himself to do. Also neat, Kent and I have the same rank
I’d imagine that in the stardew universe warp totems are fairly common? Like not just a pelican town item. Maybe the warp totems they gave Kent were like generic totems, like there’s no way to tell if it’ll take you to the stardew valley beach or deserted island unless you knew the source of the totem. So they could have handed him totems like hey why not just go home, get out of here be free, and he could never use it because he had no way of knowing if the totem would send him home or land him in shark infested waters. Taunting him with an escape option he could never use.
@@TheWretchedOwl Or maybe they handed him outright fake ones?Like, maybe handed him lots and logs of them but they were fake,or maybe explosives were hidden inside them or something among the lines
I was just about to come on here and say something similar. Even if it's completely honest (which you could never truly trust as a POW) the sheer idea of defecting and abandoning those in his care and those who fought alongside him would be absolutely torturous in their own right. It goes against everything the military/navy/marines teach you. Throw in that you've got a wife and kids at home relying on you to keep them safe... Yeah. Fuck Harvey needs to take some psych classes for the poor guy.
I like Kent. He’s strikes me as someone who would probably be quite gentle before his trauma. I always make sure to give him some daffodils when ever I see him in town.
I love Kent a lot as someone who has PTSD. It's so hard to live normally when you have to walk on eggshells to avoid triggering yourself, it can make you into a recluse. Yet he's still going outside and is still so kind to his family even though he is going through SO much. This man is unpacking an insane amount of trauma while also trying to adjust to normal life AND accepting the fact he missed so many years of his kids growing up. The fact that he's so kind and still open to the farmer coming into his life is a miracle and admirable. Kent appreciation club.
ugh I feel you. I have to constantly be aware of my triggers and avoid them. its honestly exhausting. I totally get the thing of "trauma changes you", because it really does! it completely changes your viewpoint on the world and how you interact with people. which makes it even more admirable that he still does a lot for his family and is continuously kind with the farmer.
I meant to ask Sam to a winter movie, accidentally clicked on Kent because I was tired to the point of blurry eyes...and it was the most wholesome thing ever. Highly recommend.
I have PTSD myself, though it's not from war, but from severe abuse and bullying. I must say that the scene where Kent gets triggered by popcorn really hit me hard when I first saw it. I know what it's like when you have to relive something traumatic in your head, and you end up snapping at your loved ones even though they did nothing wrong. PTSD is a horrible disorder, because not only is it awful to go through yourself, but it also hurts your relationships. I've been in therapy for many years now, and I can control my reactions much better, but it's a long process of healing.
I find Kent quite interesting as most of the character’s have liked/loved gifts that reflect their personality (for example Emily’s love for gemstones) but most of Kent’s gifts are things you wouldn’t necessarily associate with someone who is reserved. Even his dialogue when you give a loved gift is “Oh...! Mom used to give me this when I was a young boy. It brings back wonderful memories. Thank you.” He is always appreciative even when it’s a disliked gift he just ponders the item saying, “Ah... It's a... what is this, exactly? Hmm...” I honestly think that Kent is just the sort of backseat character that is actually very sweet and has a lot of backstory and just wants to readjust.
I think it's really telling and sad that he thinks back to his childhood when considering his loved gifts. Like he doesn't have adult experiences that he loves. Just childhood memories of better days...
As someone with PTSD, I relate to Kent so hard. Even the sleeping in the least accessible part of the house with your back to the wall (excellent point that) is textbook. What I find interesting about that, is that he's comfortable sleeping with his back to Jodi. For someone who's been hurt/abused/betrayed and is living with the hypervigilance of PTSD as a result, that says a LOT about the solidity of their relationship and his absolute trust in her. In a sad way, it's very sweet.
Kent reminds me a lot of a friend that even all these years still suffers with PTSD from Vietnam. You approached this subject with kindness and respect, while still making very enjoyable content. I was a little harsh on you, your last video, and by taking the time to answer, and answer with a true sense of kindness, you have gained both the respect and subs from both my husband and myself. thank you, we need about a dozen more intelligent content creators like you.
Thanks for checking in! Glad to hear it. I think there's room for humor, empathy and compassion in these villagers' stories, so I'm glad that balance was struck this time. Thanks again for your feedback last time as well. I was keeping an eye out this morning. 👀
I like Kent a lot, I ended up drawn to him as soon as met him - he's the kind of dad who has issues but doesn't take it out on his kids and tries to handle things maturely. He's a good person and I'd say a pretty good role model too!
I think only the Farmer can use the Warp Totems because of the whole forest attunement ritual so yeah, being shown a way home that he can't use might've been torture to Kent.
Maybe Kent wrote Jodi a letter about how he doesn’t think he would be comfortable in a normal double bed and might sleep on the floor instead, Jodi, being a loving wife, couldn’t bare to have her husband sleep on the floor so instead she got a very small room and a small bed to try and make him feel safer.
I think one of the lines that hit me the hardest was when he comments about you and Sam getting friendly. He says something along the lines of "you probably know him better than I do". I think they took a risk putting Kent in the game by introducing themes about war vets trying to reintegrate into civilian life, PTSD, and dealing with the horrors of war. It's a serious subject but, ultimately they did a great job. I want him to have a happy and normal life but, it would feel weird and cheapen the things he went through if he suddenly just went back to normal after befriending a farmer.
Ah yes... Kent. Surprisingly, one of my favorite characters back when I was 7. Being 7, I understood little to nothing about PTSD, but understood that he had trauma. So I tried befriending him because I felt bad for him.
I love that the popcorn scene, the option he likes the most isn't the one where you kiss his ass, he actually takes criticism and admires your honestly unlike most other villagers.
I never resided it until you mentioned it, but yeah, why doesn’t anyone but the farmer ever interact with Kent? Like he was obviously a resident before the war, right? Now that he’s back he’s only ever seen walking around alone. Does anybody even mention him being back? Almost nobody even acknowledged the war, too, and it makes me wonder if the town is just in a state of genera denial, trying to ignore the global conflict and any reminders of it. Eh, or maybe it’s just a video game 😅
He does join in with some of the other guys in Alex's 14 heart cutscene. Maybe he feels awkward without some kind of external focus like a shared passion for watching gridball. He says himself that he doesn't know what to do with himself. Maybe the others also don't know what to do with him; they're not sure what might trigger him and don't want him out of his comfort zone. So everyone is kind of floundering, other than your farmer - who just runs up to people, hands them random gifts, and then runs off again.
I think Kent hates warp totems because he couldn't use them. They're a magical item, so even if he was given them he probably couldn't use them and get back. You probably have to know how to use magic to use them. So it was torture to him to be given something to get back but he couldn't actually use. That's just what I think.
Kent reminds me of the men in my family who served in the IRL military. They were also tense and had weird hang ups after coming back due to what they went through. The fact that he likes flowers also felt very true to life as well, due to my line of work I've met a lot of war vets and many of them had an interest in growing flowers. I think it's because tending flowers is physically tiring without being inherently violent and they get something beautiful out of it in the end which are all attractive factors for them.
I really like Kent and how he's shown. I struggle with PTSD as well (tho not from war) and I just see myself a lot in him. How the peacefulness feels like a veil, the popcorn triggering him and causing him to snap only for him to apologize, and being a different person from the one he was before. PTSD seriously messes you up. So even tho he obviously can't hear me, I always pretend my character is reassuring him and being understanding because I know what it's like to live with PTSD and lots of trauma. The way he says he can't remember the faces of his friends from the battle is also a big mood. It's sad, but I always just want him to know that he has someone who understands his condition, even if I can't directly tell him. And it made me happy that he apologized to Jodi after getting angry about the popcorn. People like him and I may snap and lose it, but it is always important to acknowledge that we were wrong and apologize. It shows that Kent really wants to be better even if he can't control his trauma and the way it manifested in him. Honestly can we just get a residential therapist in town that lives with Harvey to get these people some help because a LOT of them need it-
Kent accusing the player of trying to get between him and Jodi is also a sign of paranoia, which comes with PTSD. Honestly, I think Kent is a good guy and you can see how sweet he is when you give him something he Loves "My mom used to give me this when I was a boy" Pearls, Rabbit's Foot, Prismatic Shards, etc. As well as his favourite dishes, the fiddlehead risotto and roasted hazelnuts. Point that makes me very sad: some of the things he was allegedly tortured with include, RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL (I assume Vincent will not be getting any siblings) and Poppies...I assume that must mean Kent was drugged with opium...I suppose we're lucky he doesn't "Love" them...
Kent is.... intersting he is probobly my most forgoten npc he introduced him self and i never did anything i used to be intersted about the war or something but i just forgot about him untill i wanted to max hearths with anyone in conclusing he just dosent have have anything too intersting i would love to see kents story expand.
It's hard sometimes to care about him since he shows up so much later. Like if you're already friends with everyone then he's just an outsider. Which I think is really relevant to his character actually!
I remember when I first got the game, I didn't really understand the thing with Jodi and Kent's room- after all, even though, as many commenters said, the parents of the valley usually have smaller rooms, they still usually have beds to fit them both. But after I learned about Kent's PTSD, I was like "oh yeah, that makes 100% sense." Ever since I can remember (which,,, isn't a long time lmao) I've dreamt of turning a small walk-in closet into a bedroom, and I often compare myself to a ball python, where they suffer in large enclosures. I think that having small, safe areas with strict routines is both realistic and sadly relatable as a person with PTSD (though not from war), and if it wasn't for how damn difficult his loved gifts are (i think the only one worse than him is pierre) I'd absolutely love the guy.
My theory on the small bedroom is maybe it initially was both boys’ rooms and the other room was added later after Sam got older so he could have some more privacy to himself, as well as let him practice a hobby (music) to cope with his father being away from home. You hear Jodie talk about deals at Joja a lot, but you see both her sons’ rooms are decorated and filled with entertainment items while hers is spartan. I feel she really focused financially and resource-wise on letting the boys do their own thing because their father could very well die, and wanted her kids to be innocent a while longer. This is supported because there’s regretful dialogue about her either marrying or becoming a mother young if i recall correctly, and she’d want them to be freer longer than herself.
Kent and Shane both make me feel bad for them. They get good bday gifts every year. Wanted to strangle Shane with fishing line at first, but it never worked, I tried! He’s my BF now 🥰 I hear he gives you pizza if you marry him, yes please
As someone who is diagnosed with PTSD, I find Kent relatable. I get flashbacks, triggers, anxiety attacks and etc. I didn’t serve in the military but I had really dark stuff that happened when I was young. Really great video, I appreciate you making a video about a character that a lot of people with PTSD can relate to.
A question I have is what war is like in the Stardew Universe. Kent’s army jacket looks quite modern which it implies it a modern war. Yet most weapons and things that can be used to kill such bombs in game are all fantasy weapons such as swords.
I’d just like to thank you for getting me back into Stardew Valley with your AMAZING videos. They never disappoint and you are really underrated with this top quality content
bruh, the vote was posted FIVE days ago, and this is some S teir editing and writing and researching, good on you mate!! you should be proud of your content, and keep it up! :)
I just want to give some props for using a quote from the first Rambo film in the thumbnail, befitting of Kent's character. I have only watched the first one and will probably never watch the others, as they betray the entire point of John Rambo's character. Ok, enough movie talk, thanks for making this content lad.
I always figured the warp totem dialogue, was to represent that his captors were offering him freedom in exchange for allies information or if Kent would betray his allies.
I wish Kent didn't come back at all. I think it would have been more impact full if it was ambiguous whether he was alive or not. Maybe that's a little dark but idk
Would rather not struggle with speculations and tease it especially with an alarming amount of other fatherless villagers. And even if they are there, they're sorta terrible or not good people.
Maybe Kent couldn’t use the warp totems because he has no magical abilities. The only people confirmed to use them are the player and the guy at the Winter market, both of whom are magical. (The guy at the docks looks like a wizard, I’m just assuming here). The reason why Kent hates it is because he knows what warp totems are and his captors gave him some to taunt him since he couldn’t use them.
Hey, as someone with PTSD, thanks for this. If you are going to do one of these on Leo, I only ask you to please check out the post that the Diverse Ginger Island mod author links that explains how Leo and Ginger Island are based on some particularly unpleasant outdated stereotypes about "deserted tropical islands" and "wild children". I mention this because I think you could cover that topic with the care it deserves.
I'm trying to hold out as long as possible on 1.5 stuff for all my mobile viewers out there. I will get to Leo eventually though! Thanks for the reading suggestion! And thanks for checking in!
When Jodi says Kent is a good man, and wishes that the player could have met him before his tour of duty, it really hit me. I like him a lot. Kinda wish he was a bachelor character instead that only shows up in the second year, and his spouse gifts would be batteries and bombs.
I think it's the idea that they gave him Warp Totems that didn't work. Like, I think the totems only work in the Valley. So, maybe he tried to use the totems and it raised his hope, only to crash his dreams of going home. So now, they just remind him of all the hurt they caused then.
I always took his anger about lies to have something to do with recruitment, broken promises, leaving out details in mission objectives, etc. Less about personal lies and more about institutional lies and perhaps wartime propaganda.
Makes sense that Kent wouldn't want to take the totems home where his family was, maybe the people imprisoning him were trying to hitch a ride to his home to hurt him even more.
hi, im a ptsd haver, i was abused heavily as a child, and i heavily relate to kent. he has a lot of similar feelings to what i had. i never was in a war, but i know how it feels to not feel like the same person you were, even if you dont remember what you were even like. i know what its like to be constantly on edge. kent is one of my favorite characters tbh.
As someone who was married to an ex military man, I feel bad for Kent. He always struck me as someone who needs a friend, and someone to talk to so he can deal with the trauma. My ex didn’t deal with his trauma and now my daughter doesn’t have a father. Those kind of issues affect the whole family. His story line always makes me sad.
I only started and found out about stardew valley about a week ago, but im absolutely hooked and love the game already. i stumbled upon your channel and the videos you make on the NPC's are honestly amazing. It's obvious you put a ton of effort into them and it's cool to learn how deep the lore goes and just how detailed the game is.
Hey I'm glad you're having fun! One thing I'll say though is just take everything I say with a grain of salt. Some of these theories are based on in game content, but lots of it comes down to pure speculation! :) Enjoy your experience in Stardew Valley by the way!
My head cannon is that Forest Spirit Magic allows warp totems to work for The Farmer and that's why the villagers don't like them. They just see them as a creepy dolls and The Wizard has no use for them since he can teleport. The hate dialog for all the villagers feels much but I can imagine a way home you can't use being used as torture.
I am Ukrainian. And I don't think anyone will understand Kent better than people who have been through the same thing as him. I completely understand all his lines, about sleeping, about "the masks that the city wears." You simply cannot live another life after you understand what war is. And the people around you... You just know that they will never understand you, even when they sincerely try. Especially soldiers. Post-war syndrome is a very scary thing. and after the war, you, like Kent, don't know where to go next and whether it makes sense after what you saw. You simply do not know another life and everything around you is not comfortable, you are used to what is happening at the front, but this is a very big problem. I love Kent very much and I empathize with him a lot. while the repeated lines of the other residents are annoying, Kent's repeated lines seem logical, he just can't talk about anything else, and he can't live otherwise either.
what ive always wondered was what war was meant. Who's the war against. it seems like whatever war it is, the valley seems to be in the loosing country.
I mean, not everyone in the town believes in magic, ir has contact with the supernatural, maybe he just couldn't use the totems so it was just a reminder
Honestly, Kent's one of my favorite characters. I give him jam and pickles twice a week, and he's always appreciative. I personally assumed that Kent is having trouble adjusting to the peace and quiet of Pelican Town, and I think after a war, it would make anyone antsy. Also, Kent has a tendency to stand with his back to the tree behind his house, where there isn't a chance to sneak up on him, which I always kept in the back of my mind. He also sits in his house, right next to the door, where he can keep an eye on his wife and his two children's bedrooms.
Those videos are incredible. I mean I play SDV since 2017 and think I know everyone. But you add some other perspective how to see the different characters in a different light. I suggest to cover Jodie next since you did Kent now it seems logical to me.
Hi there! I'm glad you're enjoying them. When I made the last poll, my discord users voted heavily for Pam. So we're going to check her out next acrually! Hopefully this weekend! :)
I am loving these "Exposing the Valley" videos and I love the care you approached this very real subject matter with. I tend to watch your Stardew vids with my partner who generally cares less than I do but made an interesting point about your word choice at one point in this video. You referred to Kent as a "Victim" of PTSD. While neither of us have an explicit PTSD diagnosis we are both mentally ill and have extensive trauma complicating our existing psychological diagnoses. My partner had a very visceral reaction to you using the word "victim" and, after some discussion, concluded it simply rubbed her the wrong way. She's not the only one I've heard say they prefer words like "survivor", or other more empowering terminology. I'm only bothering with this comment because you've mentioned in previous videos that you appreciate comments with intention to educate? Personally I didn't mind your phrasing, but I thought you'd appreciate knowing it's a point of sensitivity. I'm really excited for more of these videos!
Hey thanks! Huuuge wall of text incoming! I'm glad you were able to have a good discussion about it. If you don't mind, please tell your partner I'll keep that in mind and I will continue to try to learn from each video I make. These comments are always important to me. Honestly, I'll probably make a million more errors that I would never recognize without feedback from people like you! But I do try not to make the same errors twice. It's all about growing! 😁 For a little insight into my mindset... I actually chose the word victim intentionally to try to avoid saying things like "patient" or "person experiencing." I wanted it to be a very active term, but I understand where the desire for empowerment comes from. If I can be really real for a second though, I struggle with the word survivor because of personal experience. I have lost family and friends to suicide due to mental illness and diseases like organ failure and cancer. So, when I hear people saying survivor about overcoming their mental or physical illnesses, I kind of feel like.. "Why weren't my people survivors? It's not like they tried any less hard." I recognize that bias and I know it's not fair, but it certainly clouds my judgment. I apologize for detracting from your experience! Thank you for reading all this. I hope it offers some insight without sounding defensive or just dumb lol. Like I said, I'll always try to do better next time. So please never feel like you can't call me out! 😁
@@Leapalot Wow! Thanks for this response it really means a lot to me! I shared your message with my partner and she says there's no hard feelings. She just wanted you to be aware of the connotations of your word choice. I've gotta say, seeing first hand your willingness to address this sort of criticism, even when it's deeply personal, head-on? Has only made me more excited for these videos going forward! I am sorry for bringing up the difficult parts of this for you again, but I appreciate you being clear with me about your thought process. Thank You.
Don't feel bad! You were honest about your experiences and perspectives, and that deserves my honesty in kind. Thank you for speaking with your partner. This is what the internet should be like! 😁
Im glad you mentioned the spouse thing at the start, I remember thinking "oh! I could help this single mum out." Then it took me till 6 hearts to find and read the note and was like "ah... I see. Nevermind. Time to be a good friend."
(My headcanon) Kent hates warp totems because the Gotoro empire gave him a faulty one. It could've brought him home, but when he tried to use it, the totem didn't activate, leaving him to be ridiculed and beaten for trying. The milk is maybe a reference to waterboarding, and the radioactive ore and ingot may have been used to make him sterile. All in all, the Gotoro empire's people are human, but the guards and interrogators at the prison camps are vile and may even be non humans taking a less than desirable job.
Maybe the warp totems don't work outside of the Valley. Except the desert. But like imagine getting a totem that can get you home only to notice that it won't work and your last hope is destroyed
Kent always talks about what a good day for fishing it is - which makes me wish there was an option to invite Kent to on a fishing outing. I also wish I could invite villagers to the house for dinner occasionally. Kent is a good guy who went through some hell and he's figuring it out. That's all any of us are ever doing - figuring it out.
Maybe the reason Kent didn’t use the warp totems in because maybe only those with forest magic in them can use them or even now what the totems are and that’s also why they’re a universally hated gift because no one knows what they are or what they do.
I have a theory that the Travelling merchant is an assin sent to kill Kent with IED's and Kent disables the bombs and sends it to you to keep his family safe and calm.
For the totem, i would like to believe that for some reason (cuz magic), kent is not able to use warp totems. So the warden gave totems to him in prison to mock and taunt him. Like, "what is that? You want to go home? Alright use this warp totem. OH THAT'S RIGHT, YOU CAN'T USE IT! HAHAHA WHAT A LOSER!" Hence he's traumatic with warp totems
Um army, navy, marine and chair force ranks are different and vary branch to branch, I was in the Army and I trained at a base that had all four branches training in close proximity so I did get to see the differences even though I didn't understand the differences at the time. It looks closer to the air force ranks just a different color and missing the center logo. I am guessing they most likely drew inspiration from military ranks and changed it to fit the fictional place while still being a small reference xD
I thought the wrap totams was like to go to a new war ground a bit odd for a beach totam to make you go to a small town in the middle of nowhere so I think it was like idk y'all know what I'm saying right ehhh
Regarding the rotation of chevrons the military, both regular and inverted chevrons have been used at various times, but since the 20th century point up has been the right way except for in the USAF, US Navy and Coast Guard. In any case his insignia means he’s almost certainly a Corporal
Really cool that you responded to my comment! Incidentally him waking up at 0400 ish isn’t that crazy, if he’s working out, doing PT like he used to, or maybe he’s fishing. It is really weird that he was trained in celestial maritime navigation given that he’s probably a marine or soldier. That’s not standard training, so Kent may have been spec ops which adds even more layers! Given that he was trained in celestial navigation though he is almost certainly a marine rather than a soldier
Obviously the "warp totems" he was given in prison were fake and didn't take him anywhere. They filled him with false hope and then crashing disappointment and despair. Thus his hatred of both warp totems AND lies/deception.
Kent's too good for Jodi. Her constant whining about having to fulfill her role as a mother really gets to me. Meanwhile Kent expresses his regret for not being there for Sam. As a mother, I sometimes long for some time for self care, and I understand how your own needs take a backseat when you have a kid. I can't relate to Jodi constantly lamenting about having to care for her family though. It's like she just hates her responsibilities and doesn't see any reward in being with her kids. Maybe Vincent would be a better student if he were more valued at home? Apologies for the tangent
I always saving Sam's concert and dinner with Jodi for after Kent return. I want him to have good time and join in his son's big day.
awww! this is so cute
Starting a new save file and doing this
Wow, I've never even thought about that
Awww
You, are a good person
Honestly one of the saddest, subtle things I've seen in Stardew is that so many of the parents/guardians have tiny bedrooms (or none at all in the case of Pam) in comparison to their children. Like Jodi and Kent's tiny thing, or even George and Evelyn. While I'm not sure how intentional it is, shows a lot of sacrifice coming from the adults to their children.
I really liked how stardew expanded added an ugly little room for Pam. Good call. Lots of sacrifice for the younger folks.
Good catch!
While for children everything is in one room, hence needing more space.
i find it funny that kent still calls you a new farmer when the farmer has been there several years
Just keeping you at arm's length? Oraybe he just forgets your name and doesn't want to embarrass himself lol.
Yeah it’s odd, I really wish the Characters dialogue would change after you’ve been living there for so long
You're new to him.
He said "Hello, famer." the first time I talked to him and I like to imagine he just forgot my name and panicked.
"Hello... (Wait, what did Jody say their name was again? Oh crap I forgot uh uhhh) ...farmer."

He's got a lot going on, but don't we all? I could see him being someone I'd grab a beer with on a Friday night.

I really dig that idea. Nasty stuff.
I love the idea of giving them to Kent and letting him decide to stick it out and suffer with his men. That's brutal. Thanks Cpl RowBoatCop lol
Is Harvey a therapist?

I like Kent. He’s strikes me as someone who would probably be quite gentle before his trauma. I always make sure to give him some daffodils when ever I see him in town.
Even after everything he's rarely angry. Just struggling.
He still very gentle
I love Kent a lot as someone who has PTSD. It's so hard to live normally when you have to walk on eggshells to avoid triggering yourself, it can make you into a recluse. Yet he's still going outside and is still so kind to his family even though he is going through SO much. This man is unpacking an insane amount of trauma while also trying to adjust to normal life AND accepting the fact he missed so many years of his kids growing up. The fact that he's so kind and still open to the farmer coming into his life is a miracle and admirable. Kent appreciation club.
He's got a lot to deal with, but yeah. He's doing pretty okay with his family compared to where he could be!
@@Leapalot Or other "parents" without any PTSD or trauma to begin with. 😅

ugh I feel you.
I wish I could go into the game and hug Kent! Provided he'd be okay with it. He's such a sad character, and I love seeing him happy
I meant to ask Sam to a winter movie, accidentally clicked on Kent because I was tired to the point of blurry eyes...and it was the most wholesome thing ever. Highly recommend.
OOH, I'M DEFINITELY INVITING HIM. THANKIU FOR THE REC.
YEEESSS I LOVE TAKING KENT TO THE THEATER!!!! :DDD!
i also play this game until i fall asleep (on my switch)
I have PTSD myself, though it's not from war, but from severe abuse and bullying. I must say that the scene where Kent gets triggered by popcorn really hit me hard when I first saw it. I know what it's like when you have to relive something traumatic in your head, and you end up snapping at your loved ones even though they did nothing wrong. PTSD is a horrible disorder, because not only is it awful to go through yourself, but it also hurts your relationships. I've been in therapy for many years now, and I can control my reactions much better, but it's a long process of healing.
Hang in there! Tomorrow is another day to grow and heal!
do you also get the horrible memory nightmare remixes , or is that just me
Hopefully things get better for you in the future ❤
Yes i completely agree! It’s like he’s remembering the past to cope with the present
@@Leapalot that just punches me in the guts

@@skarlettsapphire4065 ohhnnooooooooooooohooho---
I think only the Farmer can use the Warp Totems because of the whole forest attunement ritual so yeah, being shown a way home that he can't use might've been torture to Kent.

@@8-ball459 the people kent were fighting with in the war:
Ah yes...
I like the theory of denial more than the logical consideration lol.
Makes sense! That would be brutal.
That's interesting! I haven't seen the flower thing mirrored in real life!
The flower is also a symbol of peace we see being used from time to time against guns in photography.
Honestly can we just get a residential therapist in town that lives with Harvey to get these people some help because a LOT of them need it-
I'm still pushing for the therapist update!
@@Leapalot huh i never thought about that
@@Leapalot That's Leo to me.

A question I have is what war is like in the Stardew Universe. Kent’s army jacket looks quite modern which it implies it a modern war. Yet most weapons and things that can be used to kill such bombs in game are all fantasy weapons such as swords.
This world obviously operates on final fantasy logic

I always figured the warp totem dialogue, was to represent that his captors were offering him freedom in exchange for allies information or if Kent would betray his allies.
I wish Kent didn't come back at all. I think it would have been more impact full if it was ambiguous whether he was alive or not. Maybe that's a little dark but idk
Too sad! lol
Either Kent learned recipes or he has a chemist friend, I want a chemist friend too.
This implies firearms are reasonably commonplace in this universe, so why am I using a slingshot?

@@Leapalot Thanks, yeah noted!
My head cannon is that Forest Spirit Magic allows warp totems to work for The Farmer and that's why the villagers don't like them. Some days you go to sleep at 1:30am some days you go to sleep at 9am I think it all balances out.
Wait did he ask what a bomb was at the end- sir what🤚😳
I mean, not everyone in the town believes in magic, ir has contact with the supernatural, maybe he just couldn't use the totems so it was just a reminder
I really wanna explore Kent's story more, I rarely befriend him even when befriending Jodi.

For a little insight into my mindset...
🤢😥
Maybe the warp totems don't work outside of the Valley. Except the desert. But like imagine getting a totem that can get you home only to notice that it won't work and your last hope is destroyed
That's real torture! 😱
Wait untill you do that one quest which you bring him a picture of his militsry friends. Sad
If he comes up to my farm, he'll find his eldest son married, and one or two grandkids. So if he gives me bombs what does that mean.
Leap!! You're my favorite
I'm pretty sure the warp totems are just a case of if, then, else the programmers overlooked
Maybe the reason Kent didn’t use the warp totems in because maybe only those with forest magic in them can use them or even now what the totems are and that’s also why they’re a universally hated gift because no one knows what they are or what they do.

Good to know! I'm not super well versed, but I'm glad to hear that I was likely correct on the rank. Thanks Alex!
It would be nice if we could have more depth to Kent
Kent's in the E-4 Mafia? Wonder what his mighty steed was?
Obviously the "warp totems" he was given in prison were fake and didn't take him anywhere. They filled him with false hope and then crashing disappointment and despair. Thus his hatred of both warp totems AND lies/deception.
Am I seeing things? Or was that really a Stormlight Archive reference
Ah PTSD my old enemy
👀 Hang in there!
Maybe Kent got a warp totem spring 1 year 2?
Oooh
I’m eating popcorn right now, hope Kent doesn’t come and shoot me with a glock.
Welp, now I want a mod so I can invite kent to drink beer with me
