  • MAJOR TRIGGER WARNING: Substance abuse, addiction, and DUI are discussed heavily in this video.
Pam is the SDV Community Punching Bag when it comes to low hanging fruit and easy jokes. I won't lie and say I'm ignoring the easy option, but let's try to think a little more deeply about why Pam might be in her situation. We won't cover Penny's father in this video, at least not in depth. That might have to wait for Penny herself!

I've seen the theory that the bus is out of commission because Pam crashed it while drunk driving, evidence being the skid marks on the road leading straight into a broken fence
I don't think that Pam killed anyone, but I do think the bus is broken at the start of the game because of her drunk driving
Also! I think that the bus that drops us off at the start it's a completely different boss that only takes trips to Stardew Valley once or twice a year, or only stops by special request enroute to somewhere else. It would explain how everybody shows up for the Stardew Valley fair, and why the bus at the bus stop only seems to go to the desert, and I don't think Pam's driving the bus for Sam's heart scene.

I think we arrive with the bus from Zozo city, which seems to run more regulalry (as its a more viable line). I think its the bus that brings us and the tourists and the one we take for Sam's concert.

For sure! I don't think they were the same bus. I just realized it was silly that you get off a bus, when there's a broken bus sitting right there like five minutes later. I wonder if Pam's only allowed to go to the desert as part of her approved travel areas lol.

Yeah I agree. And the bus is legit called « the bus to calico desert » so it only goes there and probably doesn’t get frequent enough use to be profitable to anyone, which is why it has to be founded by either Pelican town, or in that case, by you, the player

It seems every character has a hard story that keeps the community feel like it's remote town from the rest of state. Maybe the broken down community center reflects on the towns people can't move on, cause they are holding on to their past and haven't gotten a resolution. The farm can go into each character and by making right choices help each person. With Leah you can give her Sculpture show, Alex music concert, and you can help them pursue their dreams.

Pam actually was a truck driver before she becomes the Calico Desert bus driver. I got this quote on a recent playthrough: "I miss my old truck driving job. I used to go all around the valley, meetin' people, listenin' to the radio. Times sure do change.”
Perhaps she was laid off of the truck driving job and couldn't get any other employment, so she took to drinking to drown away her loss of a job she loved. Then when the bus becomes available, she's the only one in town with a commercial driver's license and can take the job.

As someone who deals with having a "high functioning" alcoholic as my parent, I can understand the things that penny goes through, in my headcanon penny teaches the kids of the valley because she wants things to be better for them than they're for her, she wants them to have a good education, so they'll grow up knowing what's good and what's not. I think Pam definitely struggles, and I feel deeply that she's not fleshed out enough, it may look like she wants things to change, be because of "the road block" of her actual game development she's unable to actually change, she's been through a lot, put Penny through a lot also, she wants to be a better mother for her daughter. I can only hope that concerned ape adds a recovery arc for her, that would be awesome.

Man my dad’s an alcoholic, and he’s invited me to check out his AA meetings a few times. And hearing about these people’s stories, you really start learning that addiction and alcoholism prey on those who are alone and vulnerable, like some sort of cult or scammer. Maybe they started because their parents abused them, or because they didn’t have any friends, or the friends they did have pressured them into it. It doesn’t matter; once they begin to rely on it more and more, the more others stay away from them, and the more they in turn become alone and vulnerable, repeating the cycle. If they get in trouble with law enforcement, that just makes those sentiments even worse.
This is why a support system is so important for the recovering alcoholic. This is why sponsor programs, groups like AA, and religion are such common options to turn to, because they provide someone to be there with you.
So yeah, I think that’s why Pam turns to religion, why she got worse after losing her job and husband, and didn’t get better just because she became better off financially.

Oh I just recently learned about ignition locks in my drivers Ed class and honestly I’m so confused about why not every single car/vehicle has one. Yes, it’ll cost more money to make the car and it won’t be a catch all to completely get rid of drunk driving (as someone could just drink WHILE driving or the lock could malfunction/be broken). But you can’t deny it’ll significantly reduce the number of drunk driving incidents, crashes, injuries and deaths. I’ll gladly pay more money if I know I wouldn’t be able to drive drunk or have a drunk driver.
Anyways actually on to Pam lol. I personally don’t think Pam killed someone while drunk driving. Cuz if Pam did kill or injure someone while driving drunk that would probably make the news and I highly doubt the WHOLE town would be quiet about it. I can see Pam getting caught drunk driving tho & having to pay a fine (and maybe a little jail time.) which could lead to her living in a trailer. My question tho is who decided to give the alcoholic a job as a bus driver. Even if she wasn’t an alcoholic when she started who would allow her to go back to the job???

    • @Leapalot

Hi there! I think they're interesting little machines. They're completely unobtrusive unless you're having issues, but I don't think they'll ever be widespread other than as a deterrent. People just won't accept that restriction if they don't have to.
By the way! If you think people can't get away with killing someone without losing their job/jail time, look up South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborn. Short version is... He killed a man while driving (almost certainly) drunk and using his phone, he called the police and told them he hit a deer. Later he returned and found the body. When tested, many hours after the collision, his BAC was of course not illegal. He then settled out of court with the man's widow. Obviously Pam is not as well connected, but dang.

breathalyzers are very temperamental. im close w someone who has one and so many things can make them go off. yogurt, mouth wash, cologne, hand sanitizer, and so many more food items that do not have alcohol in them. cant be a designated driver because if someone in your car has been drinking, it’ll go off sometimes. its incredibly sensitive. i think its absolutely necessary for people who drink & drive & dont seem to wanna stop doing that, but for everyone else who doesn’t like you or i, they are annoying ass machines that would make us to have to think through everything we do before we start driving. also, luckily, they go off while the person is driving. so they can’t start drinking once they’ve started their car, it goes off pretty frequently.

We could go a step further and eliminate the risks of all forms of driving under the influence and distracted driving entirely by making the switch to self-diving vehicles.
It'll cost more money to make the self-driving cars and won't solve all vehicle safety issues, but it would significantly reduce the number of DUI and distracted driving incidents, crashes, injuries and deaths. I think that we should embrace our inevitable AI overlords. Plus, think of the other conveniences and quality of life. Consider individuals who can't drive themselves around due to a disability; if the vehicle drives itself, problem solved!
Neil Degras Tyson brought up an interesting counter-argument though... If every self-driving vehicle always gives way to pedestrians, what would stop pedestrians from just constantly crossing the streets whenever they feel like it once everyone is in a self-driving vehicle?

I have very mixed feelings on Pam. Similar to George, I love how flawed she is, and the near horrifying realism, but I just can’t make peace with her lack of an “ending”. We get to see her start on a path to recovery, but we never see it go anywhere. On one hand, that’s how it goes sometimes, it’s not uncommon to find an addict who says they’re trying (and perhaps they really are), who makes no progress for one reason or another. Addiction is debilitating and exhausting and sometimes when you’re alone in your recovery, as it seems Pam is, it can feel like climbing a mountain without any gear. On the other hand, she is alone in her recovery, or attempt at it anyways. The town is small, the people around her MUST know she’s trying if she’s putting any effort in, so why is no one offering support? Why don’t we see Gus try to reduce Pam’s drinking with mixed drinks and alternatives? See him cutting her off early for the night? Why don’t we see Penny talk about Pam’s relapses or mood swings from the reduction of Alcohol? Little things like this ruined the immersion of Stardew valley in my opinion. Maybe even an optional event, a secret event that’s unlocked through a high heart event with Gus AND Pam where we see her talk about how she spends nights at the Saloon now more out of habit than to drink, or Gus talking to you about helping out Pam (since it feels like he does care about her, after watching her train wreck alcoholism for so long)… Okay that turned into more of a rant but I just wish we got more out of Pam, even just. Pam is the reason why I always marry Penny in all of my Savefiles.
She has some good sites, but the negative ones outweigh them by far.
Especially when you never who whether she is sober or not when she drives the bus.
And she gets mad at Penny for trying to have a better life, even if she acknowledges that Penny is way smarter than her, she doesn't seem to see a reason to change.
I really like how the developers portrayed the bad sites of alcohol. You have some funny scenes, but you also see how disfunctional the Charakters are, when they drink to much. Sadly, you can't change them. Even if the characters learn, that they should not drink that much, they always take Beer as a gift and love it.

But it’s not like Pam realized you went there and graciously drives out to help you. YOU drive the bus home. Even when you pull into the town again, you can see Pam standing there while you park the bus.

I don't think that if all that happened, including Lewis protecting Pam from further repercussion he would allow Gus to keep serving her alcohol, even Gus would feel guilty to keep enabling her in case she really was the reason another member of the community was killed, for the same reason I don't think Lewis would allow her to return to her post if she had done 0 progress on improving herself, if not for her, for his own position as Mayor, to avoid any further scandals, he would likely look for another alternative among the citizens

i grew up with drug addicts as my guardians and i super empathize with penny. my mother was just like pam in a lot of ways, just way worse. you *want* to love them. you really do. because they're your parents. but the way they continually screw themselves over is incredibly painful. it makes you feel inadequate. like you're not good enough of a reason for them to get better.
obviously this isnt true, the addict is in their own world, theyre not in the right state of mind. when you're an addict, most of the time all you can focus on is your next fix. it's a horrifying disease that i wouldnt wish on anyone.
in a situation like pam and penny's, i can say from experience that pam, at this current moment, isnt capable of getting better on her own. she isnt capable of implementing that change that she wants in her life, she's in too deep right now, and it's gonna take the help of a professional to get her out of that. that is, if she's willing to accept that help.
as someone who's been in penny's situation, the best thing she can do for herself is to sadly cut pam off. the relationship is incredibly toxic, and its hurting her mental health to stay in it. maybe if pam sobers up and addresses the pain she's trying to address with alcohol, they can start to mend that relationship. but it seems like thats gonna be a while.

I did find it weird at first that the bus had been broken down for such a long time. But, after thinking about it, I think it was actually broken. It could have been for two reasons.
The first is it naturally breaking down. It seems old, since Lewis said it broke down a really long time ago. So it could have naturally broken down, and then the town couldn't afford to fix it or get the parts. Lewis seems to siphon a lot of money off the town coffers, the tax system barely functions, etc., so I think that's fairly likely. Also, since it's probably old maybe parts weren't even available anymore.
The second is that maybe Pam crashed it. Either due to drunk driving or something like poor weather/road conditions/avoiding an animal that jumped out into the road/etc. If you look around the backwoods (to the left of the bus stop), you can find some tire tracks that looks like the bus swerved/skidded. So perhaps the bus broke down because of an accident. Maybe it's both reasons combined.
Regardless of how the bus broke down, I think that might have been the catalyst for Pam's severe drinking problem. I think she was probably an alcoholic before, and maybe drove drunk, but I think the bus breaking down would have made it much worse. It also raises another question for me. Where is Pam's old house? I doubt she and Penny live in that trailer by choice. Especially since Pam is glad when you get her a new house. I think it's likely that she lost the house she used to live in once she got laid off due to the bus breaking down; she couldn't pay the rent/mortgage, bills, etc. anymore so it got repossessed and they had to move into the trailer. But then, assuming that Pam lived in the valley, what house did they live in before? What happened to it? And why did nobody there help her when she lost everything and clearly had a problem?

I always thought of it as 1.) Pam had Penny with Penny's dad 2.) At some point, the bus just broke down and the town didn't have money to fix it (which wouldn't be unreasonable, the infrastructure of the town is questionable at best), but that's okay, Penny's dad probably works so they still have money coming in, Pam wasn't an alcoholic at this point. Then 3.) One day, when Penny was old enough to remember details (so not a baby/toddler) her dad gets fed up with living in such a small community, and it's not like they can save up to move because all the money is going to necessities, and there's no job good opportunities in the town (Gus could reasonably run the saloon by himself at that point, Pierre is Pierre, learning to be a black smith takes time/money, It's dummy hard to get a job at a library, and Willy, while he would in a heartbeat, probably couldn't afford to hire another person to work with him), so he decides to just leave Pam and Penny behind. This is when Pam starts drinking. It got a bit better after time had passed, but at that point Pam's body had become addicted to alcohol, so she just...continues. This could explain why no one brings up Pam's ex/Penny's dad, out of fear of making Pam go back to her previous state.

I know most people bought the house for Penny. But I absolutely bought it for Pam. I wanted her to have something nice. I don’t have addiction issues but I’ve felt the same way about my own severe mental health issues. Like I should be able to fix things if something material changes. That theoretically a nice house would solve everything. I really felt for her realizing that there was no easy solution. I honestly don’t think she’ll ever be able to stop drinking. But I still like her a lot. I can’t bring myself to judge her. I want her to be as happy as she can be.

However in Penny’s 6 heart dialogue, when she said her father left because he felt trapped, the way I interpreted it is that Pam’s husband killed Mona in a drunk driving accident. Then Pam got on him about his drinking after that. Pam could possibly have formed an alcoholic addiction as a way to remember him before the accident with Mona.

I could agree to that with Shane. With Sebastian and Penny though, I think it works since they're getting out of an environment they feel trapped in and finally getting a situation they're happy in, so they start warming in ways they couldn't before. I've only really experienced this with Sebastian, but I imagine it wouldn't be that different with Penny (save that with Sebastian, you always get the bonus of having a spouse that is more often than not always home with his work and so is able to watch the kids while you're out galivanting around).
I think in general though, it would help the game if there was more things that could be done with your chosen spouse that would help differentiate the experience of marrying them from the others. For instance, Sebastian is among the spouses that suggests the slime hatch. I got it for him, but then he never helps with it. If he would while other spouses helped on other projects on the farm that they suggested to the farmer, then it would give some variety and fleshing out to the spouses post marriage.
Also would be good if there were scenes and more interactions between the spouses and the children. And that the farmer could choose to do stuff with their spouse sometimes like play pool with Sam, Abigail, or Sebastian or do more band things with Sam or help Penny with more field trips for the kids or Exercise with Alex or take Abigail or Sebastian with you while mining or directly spar with Abigail or Sebastian or have more sessions of the in world's D&D with Sebastian or take a motorcycle drive with Sebastian sometime while having a friend watch the kids. (Look, I really like Sebastian, okay.) Just, more stuff to do with the spouse post marriage that makes it actually seem like they're still who you married while taking advantage of the fact that you're married.

At some point at the ten heart event with Pam, the player will have, in her words "caught [her] praying" which according to some family members that I have that also went to alcohol anonymous, a prayer or even a placebo prayer can have an effect on your drinking as a coping mechanism. Sometimes what also helps is replacing alcohol with sparkling water, which is something that Shane does at a certain heart event.

It's so tough growing up in an environment like that because even though you love them for sure, you also can't deny the hurt they do to you and feelings of being abandoned in favor of God knows how many drinks every day, so instead of growing up like them you try to become an example for the next generation to be better. And the worst part is that, the way addictions work you can't really escape by yourself, you're gonna need help and support and you have to want that help and support, for the sake of those who love you most.

team Abigale member here, i always felt bad for penny, not too the point of romancing her but maybe i'm just shallow for wanting a goth wife. i like that the devs included the option of just building pam/penny a new house, pam sucks no way around it, but nobody should live like that

The most biggest problem I could find in this was that the bus is broken.
But idk about the second bus..

Pams bus is just between pelican town and calico desert. Other buses exist for the rest of places. Like all buses it just has its own route but if no one really needs it lewis can avoid repairing it forever. Another gold lewis lets goo

Yeah, my family has it's own drunkard but the most terrifying part is that he drives better drunk. If he drives sober then you would swear on your life he was sh*tfaced but when he's drunk you would think he's driving sober. It's honestly pretty scary.

I got a geart event with Gus today, that involves Pam. It only triggers, if you have at least four hearts with Pam also.
The scene: You come in the bar and find Gus distraught. The costs are to high and the income to low. Pam especially is a problem, since she drinks and never pays. Gus doesn't want to pressure her because he sees her as a friend. Pam comes in. Gus seems a bit afraid (?) and doesn't mention the topic. You tell her about the situation. She feels guilty but also angry. She pays her debt immediately.
That means, that she had the necessary money all along and just exploited Gus' good will.

I just assumed that she had the money set aside for something like a drs appointment or bills, but then payed Gus with it and had to make the money for the other thing by selling something. Idk though!

I recall hearing somewhere that Pam was one of the options on who the sixth female marriage candidate would be in a Twitter poll CA posted back in 2016. I can’t help but wonder how different Pam’s development would be if she won that poll! Regardless, like most of the comments I don’t believe Pam ended up killing someone, however the rest of the theory sounds good to me! Great video as usual

I would've guessed that in your hot take, Lewis would've just refused to "repair" the bus, since he must know Pam is drunk most of the time.

This is my 2nd time playing through Stardew and I just can't help but befriend Pam. Idk if I feel bad for her but she's always cheery despite her situation and isn't too hard to please gift wise. I get beer and give it to her before going to the desert lol

Although many good points are made in this and other videos about the different character's... well, character, their behaviour , flaws and "missing" story arcs, we should not forget that this whole game, including the story writing and character development, is done by a single guy. There are many comments going like: "Why don't we have that? Why isn't there this? Why does XYZ not exist?" etc. There is just so much you can do. I'm pretty sure ConcernedApe is well aware of these issues (and maybe even having anxiety about it not having the perfect, complete game 😔). And still, you can only do so much.

That's a bit of a stretch... She didn't seem to drink in the morning, or drive after 5pm, so she's probably hungover driving the bus, not drunk...as for the bus being broken, maybe the player came in on another bus belonging to the city, and the one leading to the desert is broken, being the town's bus?
