Cougar Gold is an amazing sharp cheddar cheese. It is made my students in agricultural programs at Washington State University. It is crazy good and crazy expensive. It's not weird, it's cheese. It just happens to be in a can. Possibly because they ship the stuff all over the world, as it is an ultra premium cheese.
I've lived in Washington my whole life and I've never heard of cougar gold. In fact, I live just down the street from the wsu agricultural extension campus in puyallup.
Older generations ate peanut butter and mayo. I dont know anyone under 50 who has ever tried it. So I imagine it started as a desperation food during war time that carried over then eventually faded out.
True, red blooded american here. PB and Mayo, who the heck eats that? That was obviously made up Cougar Gold, thanks for the info, never heard of it, but made in the State next to me. Koolaid Pickles???? I don’t know any person who eats those.

Cougar Gold cheese from the Washington State University creamery is fantastic and is by no means a weird food. We're in Maryland and I'm not sure how we learned about this amazing cheese, but we've been ordering it online for years. Somewhat expensive but well worth it!
My sister and I are total cheese lovers and we had never heard of it until watching this. Im searching to see if I can buy a can online. Im interested to try it! I think its too cool that the students make it at the schools farm.
SouthernBredSweetie you won't be disappointed either. we freeze half the can so we can use it for football games and on special burgers during the summer. my husband went to school there or I probably never would have tried it because it does sound weird lol
You said the French would be ashamed of the Cougar Gold cheddar cheese? Actually cheddar was originally made in the village of Cheddar in Somerset, England. I don't think they would think too badly of it, it's very tasty. The reason it's called Cougar Gold is because Washington State University's athletic teams are called The Cougars and they sell this cheese to fund some of their activities. It's pretty popular in the state of Washington.
I think the point is that the French known for the importance they place on food and cheese in particular (among other things). The point isn't that all cheese comes from France. That said, it's an interesting point.
Not being sarcastic, but thank you Facts, as an American, all of these are brand-new to me, goes to show how many things we make up that never really spread across the entire country
'The rest eew wtf' implies white cheddar is repulsive to you lol. The tin doesnt affect its taste at all. A bit of history on Cougar Gold cheese--it was invented in the 1930s, when there was a national milk surplus. Researchers at the University of Washington invented a cheddar cheese that could be canned, and thus the surplus milk didn't go to waste. In WWII they also found it was one of the few cheeses that didnt spoil during transport.
sergeantbigmac I should have clarified that. The eww wtf was pretty much mainly for the mayo and peanut butter and pickles with Kool-Aid. And thank you I never knew about that with the canned cheese. They did say in the video it tasted good. I would love to try only that.
1. Should’ve done peanut butter & pickle 2. Cougar Gold is made by the Washington State University, whose mascot is a cougar, thus the name. The school is in Eastern Washington. My understanding is that the milk is from the cows kept for their agriculture program. As such, they can only make a limited amount. Cougar Gold & Local Smoked Salmon sandwiches are incredible! (I grew up on an island in Puget Sound, which is western Washington). We used to eat them on Christmas Day, when I was a kid. Yum!
annette fournier they do in fact this time of year is when it's really the best time to get it because it's able to stay cool during shipping. I've let it sit for over a year-and-a-half then opened it. It's great with tart fruit and also chili dishes. some high-end cheese stores also carry it.
WIth banana, it is truely eaten in the south. I was introduced to it as Peanut butter and banana sandwich, and yes, I could not believe it had mayonaise in it.
Is that cougar gold made for washington state university? It has the wsu logo on it, and cougar are their mascot, but I've never heard of that product.
Bartleby the Scribener yes, WSU cheese. It's amazing but expensive & hard to find sometimes. Washington state University makes it & ice cream from the agriculture program.
I love the PB and Mayo, gotta be Hellmans though :) Most people I know on the other hand think it's disgusting but I also like PB and ranch or a PB sandy to dip in my chili bowl :)
Cougar Gold is an American Cheddar cheese produced at the Washington State University Creamery in Pullman, Washington. Like other cheeses sold at the creamery, Cougar Gold is notable for being sold exclusively in 30oz tin cans. In 1993, the American Cheese Society awarded Cougar Gold with a blue ribbon, and in 1995, the cheese earned the United States Cheese Champion silver medal. Cougar Gold later received a silver medal at the 2000 World Cheese Awards and a gold medal at the 2006 World Cheese Awards.

My god, PB and mayo? I've never heard of that in my entire life, and I'm an American, lol. You'd have been better off making a Fluffernutter, or PB and Fluff (basically marshmallows). They're actually decent.
THEY FINALLY DID MY SUGGESTION! The PB and Mayo! It's an old Great Depression sandwich. I was raised on them! They are sweet and salty like eating toffee peanuts or an apple with salt on it.
Even that doesn't make sense, if it were during the great depression, you would either have mayo OR PB.... You wouldn't put them together, that shit don't make sense...
I have a feeling a lazy person didnt feel like going to the store one day, put together 2 random things, found they werent completely repulsive, and made up the depression story.
I am always just curious as to how these food combinations are originally conceived. I mean, pickles marinating in Kool-Aid? Then again, I always wondered why someone first thought to drink stuff they squeezed from a cow.
Jason Tavares lots of weird food combos come from times of war and rationing, when people were poor and had to make do with whatever they could get their hands on. But I definitely know what you mean.
Unfortunately, I don't think that explains the Kool-Aid pickles. That's doubling up on ingredients, not conserving them. Also, wasn't sugar rationed pretty heavily? I do seem to remember Ambrosia being in 1950s-era cookbooks though, along with all those disturbing Jello molds.
raeesmerelda Yeah, I wasn't specifically meaning the pickles. I don't know the origin story for them, except that they're a southern thing. I was thinking more about things like the sandwich.
PB& Mayo? Eww! Where did that combo come from? I've never even heard of that as thing till now! Oooh! Ambrosia! *want some now* Never heard of Cougar Gold.....though...I might have to keep an eye out for it now. I was asking the same question about the Koolickle. "What the F*ck is that?" I've never seen one before. The appearance makes me think a little bit of Mexican chili lime mango that I can get at the import shop down the block from where I live.
Cougar Gold is expensive, and not sold outside the region, though I think you can order it. Any of the millions of Cougs on this video could probably tell you. GO DAWGS!
Type Koolickle in the search box and there will be videos on them. I make them every now and then ... they are very good IF you use the cherry or the fruit punch flavors. I let mine cure for a month and then .... we feast!!!! LOL!!!!
I have NEVER eaten OR heard of any of that except Ambrosia...and even that is only served at old people's houses. A Kool-aid pickle? Cheese in a can? You're joking. You made that up!

Yeah, that was a good one.... They're all pretty funny.
I had some of that cougar Gold canned cheese today for the first time and it was amazing.
As someone else pointed out this is "Weird American Food" not "Popular but WEIRD American Food"...so...yeah. Major koodohs for even trying the mayo-peanut butter sandwhich, I salute you.

Still gross
Kudos?
Ambrosia isn’t weird - at least not in the South. Someone brings a bowl to every party!
Mario Gonzalez Right? It’s so good. Go Cougs!
I agree with everything but the last statement. Bow down to Washington! =)
I've lived in Washington my whole life and I've never heard of cougar gold. In fact, I live just down the street from the wsu agricultural extension campus in puyallup.
Ooooh. Thx for the lesson
I looked online after this video. It is expensive. Shame I was hoping to stock up a little. Oh well.
Also, I would like to be referred to as Cougar Gold from now on, thanks. 😂
Stacey my ex is cougar bronze.
Alastair Ward lol!
Stacey I kid though, because she's still good to our kid.
Alastair Ward It's always nice to see exes who have civil, respectful relationships, especially when kids are involved!
"Sounds like a web site".
Lol nobody in America eats this shit.
Edit: ok so I've had ambrosia salad. It's good. But the rest, never seen it or heard of it.
You do understand we have many different kinds of people in the U.S., right? Dumb ass.
Older generations ate peanut butter and mayo. I dont know anyone under 50 who has ever tried it. So I imagine it started as a desperation food during war time that carried over then eventually faded out.

sugar + vinegar + tomato paste = ketchup, which i'm pretty sure we ALL eat regularly

Ambrosia is f*cking amazing when made with fresh citrus.
Oddly it contains sour cream though.
Some use mayo, some use sour cream and some use whipping cream.
I like pecans in mine too
It's a great dessert that can be made in a snap. I haven't had ambrosia since the 1970s with the entire family.
Cougar Gold cheese from the Washington State University creamery is fantastic and is by no means a weird food. We're in Maryland and I'm not sure how we learned about this amazing cheese, but we've been ordering it online for years. Somewhat expensive but well worth it!
So how do you use that cheese ?
It looked rather dense...

SouthernBredSweetie what state do you live in? it's hard to find. they have it at Costco sometimes in Washington.
SouthernBredSweetie you won't be disappointed either. we freeze half the can so we can use it for football games and on special burgers during the summer. my husband went to school there or I probably never would have tried it because it does sound weird lol
Mallory R I'm in Arkansas but I found where I can order it directly from the school online.
The reason it is in a can is because it started during ww2 and they need to be able to ship it to the soldiers without it spoiling.
I think the point is that the French known for the importance they place on food and cheese in particular (among other things). The point isn't that all cheese comes from France. That said, it's an interesting point.
My2ndnephew I think they meant that they would be ashamed of their own cheeses by how good that cheese is. at least that's how I understood it.
Ah, it's always good to see something another perspective!

sergeantbigmac uh yea I love white cheddar. I never had it in a can before. Never knew it came in a can.

Yawn...in other words, 50 triggered SJW snowflakes in Washington state are aware of it while the rest of the country is, and remains, totally ignorant of the processed crap.
Its not "processed" though it's made and inspected in a creamery at WSU. Its high quality cheese.

THEY FINALLY DID MY SUGGESTION! The PB and Mayo! It's an old Great Depression sandwich. I was raised on them! They are sweet and salty like eating toffee peanuts or an apple with salt on it.
Mr Potential Platypus the Depression was a long time ago and I'm sure people made a good decision leaving this sandwich back there! 😂
Nicole Daley lol
Even that doesn't make sense, if it were during the great depression, you would either have mayo OR PB....
You wouldn't put them together, that shit don't make sense...
I have a feeling a lazy person didnt feel like going to the store one day, put together 2 random things, found they werent completely repulsive, and made up the depression story.
I am VERY American and I would never have peanut butter and mayo
I have eaten PBJ and mayo sandwiches since I was a little kid. Love em!
Pregnant women? 😜
poor people's food is usually the origins of some of these odd dishes.....chitlins, rocky mountain oysters, grits, Spam, etc.
