SonicProjects OP-X PRO-3 comparison to Oberheim OB-X as well as Jupiter-8 and Prophet-5. Includes A:B tweaking as well as comparing cloned presets.
Setup:
Upper keyboard: Oberheim OB-X Rev.2 vintage built in 1980 equipped with 6 voices. The stereo output goes directly to input 1 and 2 of an RME Fireface UC which has very clean and neutral sounding converters. Signal directly recorded to disk.
Lower keyboard: E-MU Xboard 61 MIDI keyboard attached via USB to a MacBook Pro M1 2020 with macOS Ventura 13.4. The MIDI signal is driving OP-X PRO-3 which is hosted in Logic Pro. The stereo output of OP-X PRO-3 is directly recorded to disk.
Blue skin installed.
Parts:
00:00 A:B tweaking
10:51 Comparing presets
23:35 Jupiter-8
29:05 Prophet-5
Since no Jupiter-8 and and Prophet-5 were available this part of the comparison uses the excellent original factory presets recordings of Synthmania:
Jupiter-8 factory presets:
www.synthmania.com/jupiter-8.htm
Prophet-5 factory presets:
www.synthmania.com/Prophet-5%...
OP-X PRO-3 includes a dedicated bank for the Jupiter-8 factory presets and a dedicated Prophet bank which also includes some cloned original factory presets.
OP-X PRO-3 exactly emulated the inner structure of voltage controlled polyphonic analog synths of the late 70s and 80s which basically all worked the same, so:
- Separate circuits for each voice each sounding slightly different because of device tolerances
- Trimpots on the voice boards to tune the boards and wipe out the differences
- A voice allocation unit distributing the notes coming from the keyboard to the voice boards
- An autotune unit sending an offset-voltage to the boards to wipe out differences
Since all the voltage controlled polyphonic analog synths (OB-X, Jupiter-8, Prophet-5, Matrix-12, etc.) basically worked the same and mainly differed by features, the sound of the filters, the amount of detunings and stereo behaviour (Oberheim stereo, Jupiter-8 and Prophet-5 only mono) a synth having some flexibility regarding these potentially is capable to clone the typical sounds of all of these, which is the case for OP-X PRO-3, which offers:
- 10 Filter types
- Dual filter design
- Seamless filter modes and mix morphing
- 5 Envelopes (4 poly, 1 global)
- 4 LFOs (3 global, 1 per-voice, so x 12)
- FM, Sync, X-Mod, Ring Modulation
- VCO and DCO behaviour emulation
- A Modulation Matrix offering 5 slots
- Amp Envelope: linear or logarithmic attack
- 12 voices on 12 separate tunable boards
- Voice-boards individually (de)activatable for any custom polyphony
- Activating just 1 voice allows to emulate mono-synths
- Polyphonic portamento with portamento detuning
- Voice panning and panning modulation
The (de)tuning and stereo field settings can be saved with the patch, so each patch can have a completely different character even before setting the "normal" parameters.
The free demo version of the synth offers ALL features and sounds.
The only limitations are: Repeated soft audio fade-out-ins and need to load the plugin anew after 20 minutes.
No registration needed for download:

The initial skin color is beige.
The blue and dark skin re-skinning packages can be downloaded here too.
P.S: Modulation depth (FREQ DEPTH) set a bit too low in OP-X PRO-3 at about minute 3 in the video which you also can see by comparing the knobs.

@SonicProjects, please add back the keyboard in OPX GUI, it was nice to play and see it.
This is the best plugin synth ever made imo, the detailed emulation of the 'mechanics' of the synth is many years of work.
I have used it since day one because i found it so musical to play compared to other vsts back then.
I can hear a difference when compared to the hardware, the hardware is often brighter with a little more bite and defintion.
I think a 1-2db high shelf EQ from 8 or 10k may fix this, and or maybe subtle distortion/saturation like from a preamp will bring this quality.
It doesn't have as much resonance as the hardware at max setting, or maybe the Q is not as sharp. That made the hardware squelchier at max setting, but this is often heard with software vs hardware.
But other than that it is an incredibly detailed emulation that gets the shape and texture spot on.
Thank you Sonic Projects for creating this !
Fully agree, one of the best emulations ever. But I hear the differences between too. Brighter and a very little bit more powerful. Nevertheless: Version 3 is a no brainer at all.
@@jensbarth8523 I ran it through a hardware Neve 1073 preamp clone and it absolutely brought it to life !
Infact it brought everything i ran through it to life.
It adds organic subtle changes to the audio, and when you bypass it, you can hear that digital is static and perfect every time. No change at all.
The sound is amazing but you really need a GUI guy
Definitely. The new GUI looks a bit friendlier but is still too convoluted.
Idk. I love the gui. I hate arturias style of stuff. So ugly
@@joeyfeniello Yep, Arturia GUIs are ugly the other way round, i.e. too simplistic.
Best in preserving the look of the original hardware are Cherry Audio and GForce IMO. I could watch the CA Mercury-6 for hours without even playing it.
Amazing. Partly indistinguishable. My favourite parts:
07:30 Can't hear ANY difference
09:49 Almost the same
12:59 Simply amazing sound - hard to believe it's a soft synth
14:09 Dito
22:42 Hardly distiguishable
28:18 Can't hear a difference in this one (in the other Jupiter-8 ones I clearly can - but well cloned)
sounds amazing. also thanks for adding the blue skin again
Been using Pro II since it came out. Just upgraded. I love how it stands up so well!
Awesome simulation and great video! Upgraded today! :)
Fantastic job on this. The patches are amazing!
For me, version 2 was the best plugin when it comes to Oberheim sounds. This has now been optimized with version 3.
I have to say, the oversampling version finally gives the synth the only thing it was lacking in the first place, the depth and dynamic range no longer sound or feel like a VA. Hit the Tom Sawyer bass note and listen to the sounds swirl around you.
Fantastic. Simply fantastic. I recommend it to all my musician friends and customers.
Excellent work, having the Oberheim OB-X8 now but still prefer the sound of the OP-X PRO-3 especially with the newly added mod matrix.
I’m gonna have fun sampling this into my ASR.
Amazingly GORGEOUS!!!
Totally amazing!
SonicProjects, why have you remove keyboard in OPX GUI, it was nice to play and see it
Hands down the most realistic analog synth emulation on the market. Yet nobody managed to faithfully emulate Minimoog bass sounds, or sounds of its analog physical emulator SE-1.
The Legend by Synapse Audio is close enough for no one to know the difference. Check it out.
Softube’s version is very very close, too.
UAD Minimoog is spot on.
Damn! It's phenomenal ❤
Can it sounds like Moog Sub 37? OPX had that Moog Ladder filter option but no feedback/drive?
Incredible. Completely indistinguishable.
Really? The analogue keyboard has much more depth to it. It's also brighter. I think certain tones can be made to be identical, but certainly not one-to-one.
Edit: Damn speech to text!! ffs. Tones not towns. lol.
The software if anything is brighter....but it ends up being indistinguishable. Sometimes the software is fatter, sometimes the hardware, but imo it's just down to tweaking. It's better than the gforce one imo, which for me did not give any hardware vibes. This makes me want to spend money on the new Sound force controller.
@@RJ1J in a blind test no would be able to tell, so yes, indistinguishable
@@RJ1JI think most of what you are hearing is mostly a difference in calibration at this level. I know exactly what you are talking about, I hear it in every vs ever made, but OP-X 3 with the oversampling version sound absolutely huge and real. I think the real on has some voices where the pulse width is slight different from one another giving it a much larger sound. Now I do hear a slight variation in dynamics here that I will throw to the OG, but that simply could be interface he is using to capture it, but most likely does have a slight but more of dynamics.
Actually in the cloned presets you are right, the real one is brighter and the attack is off. The real one has this more drawn out attack. One thing I give him credit for is not cheating the results though. He tweaked nothing whatsoever from the patch to real synth.
Is the interface able to do ultra high definition retina / 4k resolution? It's great that you have the dark skin and blue skins - so much better. Most importantly - incredible sound!
Could we get the exact patches you used in the comparison?
I love my prophet 5 but there really isnt any point in hardware synths any more. Nobody can tell them apart from soft synths.
There is a point: the (G)UIs! The P5 and OB-X excel by simplicity while this software overwhelms you with tons of options. When I would really make use of them: when am I supposed to make *music* then?
Other than the immediacy of knobs control, why would anyone want or need a vintage or modern Oberheim now that this plugin is available? Can't imagine a reason.
NI Komplete NKS compatibility please.
yes, I second this!
💯
op-x pro 3 is fantastic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyone thinking about buying this, I've had this OP-X software for years and it's brilliant. If you're on the fence do it.
The emulation tries to drive with a pulled handbreak. It's one of the better ones avaible tho.
The hardware is clearly superior
no need for hardware these days.. its not even funny at this point... this and cherry audio nail it...
