  • Neurons are biological cells, so why do they have an electric charge? In this video, we introduce the concepts of an electrochemical gradient of ions, the Nernst potential, then connect these concepts with Ohm's Law from electricity and magnetism to explain the electrical potential of a neuron when it is at rest.

The subtle recommendation to search for and watch videos of fainting goats, you’re welcome = genius 😂. Amazing content! Thank you so much for making this available!

I really like the way you view neuroscience from a variety of frames, so to speak, like electrical diagram as well as the usual chemical analogies. I’ve always found those connections lead to broader insights, being able to abstract one level higher, in the way that mathematicians do. Thank you!

Well done, explanations are pretty clear and deep at the same time. Going to watch the whole Course.🤓

Thank you for the great content you provided for us! I thought about independency of ion channels and tried to make analogy to the circuit diagram. In the circuit diagram, changing value of voltage source (assume that Ek) will directly affect amount of flowing current at each branch. This independency may only valid under some constraints we need to point out.

Nice, very intuitive lectures. 10:41 when we calculate the outside concentration of K+, what volume in outside region we are looking at ?

Great question! We are most concerned with the concentration of K+ immediately outside the cell. This concentration can be the same as solution the cell is in, but can also be locally a little different before it equilibrates with the exterior solution.
