Great idea about the straws! I don't practice in front of a mirror, so this might help!

This was very helpful. I think I don’t apply enough pressure and play too close to the bridge. I practice in front of a mirror most of the time but when I don’t I can’t really see what I’m doing since my mute is blocking my bow. I think I can tell the difference by ear now. Thanks for sharing!

Would too much rosin on the bow cause a scratchy sound?

Yes it would. Always be sure to wipe the strings down after practice so rosin doesn't collect overtime. If you have too much rosin (when playing, a cloud of rosin bursts into the air above the bow) gently tap the middle part of bow stick against your hand or arm a few times. If there's still too much rosin, grab a clean towel or cloth and gently wipe the hair a couple of times.
