SHOULD I USE A SHOULDER REST? | Pros & Cons | Violin & Viola
You’re very good 🥺thank you , you solved many issues for me
I found this very helpful. I have been trying to put my shoulder rest too high on my shoulder and then it continually slips off. This seems to work better, at least right now.
Super helpful!!
Helpful to control my slide bowing! Thank you will work on this
Super helpful! Thank you!
I have a Kun shoulder rest. I like the many ways to adjust it. It really helps to keep posture but for beginners but if you are already used to it it is a bit harder.
I was so distracted because you're so adorable heh! I forgot we were talking about shoulder rests for a second there..!! You haven't posted in 3 years btw? Just wondering.
Could you please do a video about using the ISI/Aceto Violin neck strap? (Ithaca Stringed Instruments/ Eric Aceto, luthier & designer of the neck strap).
This really helped me understand bow grip. thank you!
The only video I found that helped me not be in pain while trying to figure out how to use my kun shoulder rest. New viola player. Thank you!!!! ~*Shana
So grateful for your help!! Thank you for the video’s, I’m new to plying the viola, I love it but gosh I’m struggling with a crooked travelling bow, squeaky harsh bow sounds, tension everywhere… 😅😂
That was amazing. I didn't know that the shoulder rest could change the leg's lenght. I had my first experience with the viola today and it was so uncomfortable, so uncomfortable. But since I am self-taught, I thought that it was probably due to me not being used to it, but now I see that I need to adjust things to fit me, and you showed me how to do it.
Good video ❤
Cool! Thanks. Been playing viola for 24 years now. This is helpful.
My last name is Sicard. Should I use the Franco-Belgian bow hold because of this???? LOL!!! I'll find the natural and effective hold, based on my physiognomy, as one should do. Yeah. Much closer to the Franco-Begian.
Great lesson.❤
Wonderful lesson.❤
Great lesson. You should have much more views on your channel. ❤
Another great lesson 😊
You are very good to explain things. Thank you for the lesson.👍
Are you the brother of violinist Nancy Zhou
Could you try your own left hand, so that you feel for the starters in real?
tnx a lot for your great explanation 🌌🌑
Who are the musicians behind these songs and where are you crediting them?
Thanks, but nothing works ajusting any sholder rest ive tried, nor wasting any more money on them Ill keep using a potholder with and folded wash cloth.
I've been using my shoulder rest wrong. Thank you for making this video! And beautiful HxH poster back there btw :D
As an OAP,new to violin, I find it impossible to hold violin horizontal without supporting with left hand. Which would be the best kind of inexpensive shoulder rest? GDC
Could be as cheap as getting a sponge that could be shaped to fit your body and holding up the violin. But if you would like to purchase something pre-made I would suggest going into a store that carries few different types of shoulder rests and simply try to see which fits best.
Thanks will definitely be working on this.
Before I watched this, everytime I played, my shoulder's were always cramping and I felt uncomfortable. Now, I feel a lot better thanks to this tutorial!
working on bruch concerto this helped so much thank you
Best explanation I’ve seen so far! Thank you!!!!
I am soooo excited that I clicked on one of your videos & now get to learn from you :) I’m 44 and absolutely love every single thing about the way you teach…you feel like a true natural & understand every aspect of what & how & why we need to learn these things. Thank you for sharing your knowledge & experience with those of us who are learning to play via online teachers vs in-person❣️ I started my violin journal today too, thanks to your suggestion in another video👏
I like this!!! Thank you :)
Very helpful. Now i understand how to solve my bouncy bow.
Whichever fits your anatomy. Every hand is different. Hold the bow in the least painful way.
Thank you so much ❤
Very useful! I wasn't initially sure if it should curve towards or away 😅 It's always great to get additional information!
I am 74 and play a 1/2 size violin. (I am 4'9"). I have had several shoulder surgeries where they removed some shoulder bone...I have had trouble finding a comfortable chin rest. Can yiu help me?
Hi, your best bet would be to try various kinds at a shop and see what fits best. If nothing at all, perhaps a custom chinrest would be the next option.
Мизинец круглый в русской Советской школе. Локоть высокий, а не такой прижатый. Речь идёт о старой Русской школе что-ли? Так в России сейчас не играют практически, у всех советская школа
Relax shoulder .....nose facing .....
nice video. may i ask. how to do the vibrato without bow bouncing? especially upbow
Bow bouncing while doing vibrato probably means your vibrato is causing the instrument to shake. Make sure the vibrato is relaxed, especially the side of your index finger, let it be free and not rub against the neck of the instrument. You might also want to consider that the bow has enough pressure while doing the vibrato.
matur suksma
My issue is that i have a long neck
Have you tried longer shoulder rest feet?
@@undergroundvirtuosos1873 I have but the issue could be too the chin rest....the violin needs to fit the body like a glove and because of my long neck all the weight of my body is falling on my left hand
I agree that it could also be the chin rest. Best to have a good teacher examine your setup and see what you need to do from there. It is possible to add height to chin rests. One way is just adding more cork at the base but too much cork can make it unstable. Another way, if the top of your chin rest fits well with your jaw/chin, but it needs to be higher, you can have a luthier add a little more wood at the base of the chin rest. This will be stable, but it does add slightly more weight to the instrument. Final method would just be trying out different chin rests and see what fits.
@@undergroundvirtuosos1873 thanks bud
Thank u at last I understand what is the difference between the two
Hmmm.. mine went inth n trash.. i couldget it ti stay so it went in the trash!
You are so right. I've heard from many brilliant musicians who swear that the body/mind coordination often gets perfected during times of rest, including SLEEP. I've found that when I hit a wall, it means my "info" needs more time to "input" into my system, my learning system is overwhelmed, much like a computer that is backlogged. If you let things rest, something weird happens. The snarl untangles by itself, the data has sorted itself out, and WOW...all of a sudden, things snap into place. :)
I love you ! You are the best!!! Thank you for these videos, they have made all the difference in my form and technique.
I would love to see a new video from you...maybe teach us a song on the Viola step by step? I'm trying to understand where to put vibrato, double stops and other flourishes to my pieces ! Help ! :)
nice ur underrated
This reminds me of the joke about which species would be the last to discover water: fish of course. Long necked “fish”. Now that you’ve exhaustively addressed the care and feeding of all your long necked students, would you please address all those same issues and concerns for your short to very short necked students! As someone new to violin, but with a short neck, I have all kinds of difficulty feeling secure or relaxed holding my instrument. Or do you only accept students with long necks? Respectfully.
People with shorter neck should explore lower chin rests and shoulder rests (or sponge) with lower height. Unfortunately, the only way to know what suits your needs is to try them. I would recommend going into a shop (perhaps bring a professional/ teacher with you) to find one that works for you.
Thank you, sir.
