    Veteran of 5 ten day retreats and one 10 day service. Not only is it different for everyone but also so different every time you sit for a course. It's Important to note (as you did here) that it is not all sunshine and light. It can be very confrontational at times; and by "it" I mean you are confronted by deeper and darker layers of yourself that arise while you are meditating and training your mind to not react. For training in preparation it is important to note that you never sit more than one hour without a break. If you can, practice getting through one hour on the cushion at home and it will be helpful in the course. The western mind may be presented with cultural aspects that seem foreign but if you've done any reading of eastern thought it won't seem too exotic. All of that said, I am a changed person; much less anxious and fearful. The atmosphere around the house is much more peaceful and kind. I'm still very much the intense and high strung me, but less reactive. The practice continues.

    • @siebrendevos
      @siebrendevos  Рік тому +3

      Yes exactly, every time it's different and it's so easy to expect it to be all bliss but it's definitely not. What do you mean with the cultural aspect you mentioned? Glad to hear your days are more peaceful and kind!

    • @phatpurrly
      @phatpurrly Рік тому

      @@siebrendevos Eastern thought and religions are and can seem exotic and foreign to the western mind. Specifically, Goenka's chanting, the pagoda, the meditation cells, the silence, the content and structure of the teaching and meditation itself may be completely novel to some. The idea of suspending prior beliefs and giving yourself over to nothing other than the present moment; the thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations that are manifesting for you right here, right now can be jarring to those who have never examined themselves this intimately before. Even with my exposure (mostly through reading) to eastern philosophy and culture my first 2 courses were quite a struggle, not solely from a cultural perspective but the rigor of the work itself. I'm so glad I persevered. I've spoken with newbies on their first course, prior to the start of noble silence, and suggest that they assume that if they've gotten this far they must ready for it, and I would suggest the same for anyone who has stumbled onto your video here. Be Brave!

    • @siebrendevos
      @siebrendevos  Рік тому +1

      @@phatpurrly That's so interesting, and I get your point with the cells and pagoda. Although I got almost the opposite view of it. This is because through books and documentaries it's so easy to associate all these wonderful pieces of art, incense, embroidery, temples with spirituality. But when I came to the retreat in Belgium I realized that that's all just distraction. It's all form. But the real teaching is formless, hence there's very little decoration. I really like that, that place behind form that art is pointing towards, that place behind words that koans are talking about.

    • @phatpurrly
      @phatpurrly Рік тому +1

      @@siebrendevos I would have to agree. The aspect that works best for me is exactly that formless emphasis; the stripping away anything mind might cling to. I suspect I am looking at it from an American perspective, we tend to be intolerant / suspicious of that which seems exotic and foreign. Mind, I am pointing this out for the benefit of those attracted to the possibility of doing a course and what may hinder that impulse. Someone "on the fence" may look for superficial reasons to not attend. Indeed, the internet reveals a small number naysayers calling it a cult, fearful of the threat to precious ego. I fully embrace the teaching and the quiet minimal environment when on retreat and would encourage anyone who has reached the stage of considering a course to dive right in.

    What's really a trip is that this is the way our minds were all the time when we were small. We just didn't think all that much.
    It really is wonderful that the vipassana folks, as well as the zen folks, do this for people. You can pretty much guarantee that you're going to get really high at one of these things if you stick it out. You can ignore his "disclaimer".

    This has kind of been similar to my experience these past 3 years of COVID… no job, fewer friends, no indoors with others still/ being motivated by people, growth, etc…
    Basically I feel like I don’t exist and life is both interminably agonizingly slow and very fast.
    And yes, constantly looking for a way out- solve my brain, solve my personality, figure out what happened when, figure out how to finally make money and be free, finally this finally that.
    It doesn’t stop … and everyone around me can’t stand it- but my body is starving for movement and life, my brain is starving for action and creativity.
    Basically, I feel I have a one track mind on how to live again and both don’t know how to get into that, nor to exist this way and just live
    I have thought about why people think of suicide now because at times, this all seems pointless or scary.
    So why is this happening without a deliberate meditation?
    This is great, but will I ever live again?
    What next?
    I do want a life where I’m less in this place.

      Thanks! daar had ik het toevallig afgelopen week nog over, dus ik snap wat je zegt en er zijn meerdere mensen die die angst met je delen. Tijdens de 10 dagen is er altijd goede begeleiding beschikbaar voor vragen. Aan het einde van de dag is er altijd een uurtje "discourse" van Goenka (de man die vipassana bekend heeft gemaakt). In dat uurtje leer je veel over hoe je met je eigen geest om kan gaan tijdens die 10 dagen. Het is moeilijk, maar je staat er niet alleen voor!
      En ja ik dacht eigenlijk wel "hoe overleef ik dit nog de komende 10 dagen?" maar dat is juist het leuke, want dat stemmetje die zich dat afvraagt ben jij niet. Dat stemmetje wordt telkens zwakker en zwakker, en kan zelfs kort verdwijnen. Wat je dan overhoud is bewustzijn, of bewust-zijn. zonder "hoofdruis" zoals ik dat noem ;)

    I hear a lot of people say Vipassana helped them tremendously, but I also heard stories of Vipassana practitioners become emotionless, unfeeling, or they killed themselves after one of these retreats, can you add anything to that?

    • @siebrendevos
      @siebrendevos  8 місяців тому +2

      It's good that you're mentioning both the positive and the negative sides. And you could be right about the negative part. Although during the 10 days there is proper guidance and you can talk with the teacher if you experience any distress. I've got to be honest and say that sometimes I've also wondered whether I was becoming emotionless when practicing at home, but I think this is due to general life circumstances not the meditation. The last few weeks I've noticed the exact opposite, I'm starting to become more in touch with my emotions again, since picking up meditation as a daily practice again. Have you personally experienced any negative side effects from meditation?

      @@siebrendevos The fact that you can even notice that is significant.
      You probably know that in certain traditions (e.g. buddhist, yogic, shamanic, and many other contemplative, meditative, consciousness-based traditions), the breath is closely coupled with the mind. So if you change the breath, you inevitably change the mind.. Thus, engaging certain breathing techniques, you can do things like recondition your mind, or relax it, still it, enhance it, improve your metal clarity, recall, or focus it, etc. It's a capability that is built right into you ;)

    Great man, Do you still meditate every day?
    For me a retreat at least once a year and my daily meditation is key for me.

    • @siebrendevos
      @siebrendevos  8 місяців тому

      Yes, I try to. I just started again a few weeks ago. It's easy to get caught up in living life and having a full time job, convincing yourself that "I just need to relax a bit" and end up watching youtube shorts for 2 hours instead of meditating. (I know I'm guilty) But meditation really builds up momentum, it's an upwards spiral, when you meditate you get more in touch with your "higher self" and because of that it's easier to keep going. I did fall into the trap of thinking "Man, i'm feeling so good lately, there's no need to meditate anymore". than I slip off and a few weeks later I find myself thinking "Man I should really start meditating again". and so the cycle continues haha. What (if anything) makes daily meditation difficult for you?
