  • World renown and trailblazing historian and author (Sapiens, Homo Deus, 21 Lessons for the 21st Century) Yuval Noah Harari was a speaker at the India Today Conclave (March 9, 2018). This is a small clip where he discusses his experience with Vipassana and also some discussion on Reality, Suffering, and Consciousness.

    SIDE-NOTES:
I attended my first Vipassana 10-day course in Jan 2018, in Kaufmann TX.
    * I agree with Harari's statement "It is the least dogmatic thing I ever encountered in life."
    * Like Harari I want to continue with "practicing Vipassana meditation to see reality more clearly."

Vipassana practice core = Continuous awareness of physical sensations, without reacting
Every sound, vision, taste, smell, everything, that contacts the body instantly produces some sensation.
The technique focuses on natural physical sensations as the crucial link between mind and body, the key to understanding human behavior.
    * Through Vipassana one realizes that one’s own attitudes and addictions, suffering and happiness, are not caused by the outside world.
    * It is the reactions to pleasant or unpleasant sensations the world evokes within the body, that dictate one’s actions, and conditions the mind.
    * By watching the physical sensations accompanying these emotions, and by understanding their impermanent nature, one can actually start changing the habit of blind reaction.
    * Between the two poles of expression and suppression, lies a third option, mere observation.
Reminds me of the quote: “Between Stimulus and Response There Is a Space. In That Space Is Our Power To Choose Our Response” Perhaps Vipassana meditation can give me more-quantity & quality-access to this space.
    Brief Description of Vipassana:
    * Vipassana is an ancient meditation techniques. The word Vipassana means seeing things as they really are.
    * It is the process of self- purification by self-observation.
    * One begins by observing the natural breath to concentrate the mind.
    * With a sharpened awareness one proceeds to observe the changing nature of body and mind and experiences the universal truths of impermanence, suffering and egolessness.
    * This truth-realization by direct experience is the process of purification.
    * It can be freely practiced by everyone, at any time, in any place, and will prove beneficial to one and all.
    What Vipassana is not:
    * It is not a rite or ritual based on blind faith.
    * It is neither an intellectual nor a philosophical entertainment.
    * It is not a rest cure, a holiday, or an opportunity for socializing.
    * It is not an escape from the trials and tribulations of everyday life.
    What Vipassana is:
    * It is a technique that will eradicate suffering.
    * It is a method of mental purification which allows one to face life's tensions and problems in a calm, balanced way.
    * It is an art of living that one can use to make positive contributions to society.
I decided to keep a video-log of my Vipassana voyage, one video every 3 - 6 months:

An Indian interviewer with no expertise of something which is taught in her neighborhood learns a lesson from an Israeli writer with an experience of her neighborhood. Actually the point is if one wants to learn something distance or boundaries whether material or immaterial doesn't matters. As he says in his book 'Sapiens' the concept of nation is an imagination so as to make people Cooperative and therefore it's TRUE to the some extent. There is a long roads beyond vipasna as well. Let me also throw some light on lifes purpose as the interviewer asked him about the same, the purpose of life for each individual depends upon his own external or internal and material or spiritual life learnings and experiences. Therefore every individuals purpose of life is totally unique but still one thing is common that lifes purpose has to have something which brings peace of mind and satisfaction or contentment along with such a level of acceptance of life that makes ones life something which can't be explained but can only be experienced by an individual him/her self. 🙏

you presume the deep purpose of a temple is to bring peace and harmony to the world. I've never heard that before so it cannot be the universal definition. Best he had started by saying "IF" when he set up his STRAW MAN ARGUMENT but he's too arrogant for that. No one will even know this man's name in 50 years. He's so shallow and trendy. He and Steven Pinker should have babies: They would be the most ordinary offspring in the world. Hahahahahaha.

Yuval has done a stellar job of not judging the ignorance (moha) and simply put, delusional grandeur of the interviewer, instead, with compassion he tries to encourage her through his words and personal experience to observe herself. It's so obvious she has never sat in silence to observe her mind for even half a second, let alone 10. What fascinates me is how Vipassana, which originated in India, is so distant from Indian culture today. They are overrun with consumerism, a fake reality. Yuval eloquently explained that all of that mental fiction is man-made, not lasting. The deep satisfaction he describes gained by Vipassana meditation is not an intellectual understanding it's an experiential one - experiencing reality as it is, not how you project or imagine it to be. You can't ask a question and expect to know his level of insight.

    • @RashidKapadia

I wish Harari would devote a whole book to these topics. Understanding the mind is probably the only thing that could potentially avert the grim fate that may await our civilization and our species in the 21st Century.

    • @RashidKapadia
      @RashidKapadia  5 років тому +1

Yes. Yes. Yes. Like you, I sure wish that Harari would devote an entire book to this topic. And I won't be surprised if he eventually does.
Meanwhile, in his latest book, "21 Lessons for the 21st Century", he superbly spells put what we should all be concerned and focused about in this century. The last chapter is about meditation. It is very good.
Another book which I think addresses this topic (understanding the mind in the light of emerging science) very well is "Why Buddhism is True" by Robert Wright. Highly recommended.
This knowledge and approach to world peace and problem solving is spreading surely and slowly.
I've written a fairly long article where I have expressed hope that with the return & spread of the Vipassana meditation technique around the globe, we are entering a 2,500 year era of suffering reduction and suffering elimination on a scale never seen before. The article is titled: "50 Years Ago, in 1969, Vipassana-an Ancient Meditation Technique, Returned to India, the Land of its Origin." If you would like to read it, here's a link: necessarybridges.com/2019/05/50-years-ago-in-1969-vipassana-an-ancient-meditation-technique-returned-to-india-the-land-of-its-origin/
And here is the idea expressed in a 1-minute (unlisted) video. ua-cam.com/video/dcl-Y6zV8bY/v-deo.html
With Best Wishes & METTA for ALL.

@@RashidKapadia It has been a few years, but thank you kindly. A book you might be interested in is "Spirit Tech: The Brave New World of Consciousness Hacking", where the authors describe the incredible finds in neuroscience and technological tools we are developing to rapidly accelerate the spiritual path.
      mindandculture.org/projects/engaging-virtual-environments/spirit-tech/
I know this from experience. I struggled terribly with meditation for many years and made no progress. I had addiction and kundalini syndrome issues and it all overpowered my ability to meditate. A few years ago, I used a powerful molecule called NAD+ (which also has age-reversal and slowing properties, and is fantastic for sore backs and joints) to partly repair my abused brain, and eight months ago I discovered neurofeedback, which is settling my constant fight-or-flight nervous system down after 25 years.
Also, the resurgence of psychedelic research after it was killed off for 50 years is a very good sign.
The reality is, meditation alone will *never* succeed in reaching the masses at the scale and with the power required to change civilization in time to avoid disaster.

Hope Indians can learn and Yuval can mention it more that vipassana type practice has nothing to do with spirituality or some force. Before one wants to learn or understand anything complex, the ability to meditate is the first enabler. Without the ability to be content with boredom , stress snd misery will dominate the mind.

Amazing!!! Exactly is correct. This man speaks the truth. Bravo!! Great video!! Meditation is not going somewhere else and imagining pleasant things and going to another planets. Observing the reality is real meditation. No changing of what is. As it us. No trying to change reality. Leave the things on their own way and be the observer.
Thanks to the Buddha, we can learn. Vipassana. This technique comes from the Buddha. As he was searching many years the “truth” with different teachers, he mastered the concentration meditation, but then he realized that this is not the final point. And he did practice alone and he became the Enlightened one, the Buddha. Thanks to him, we know Vipassana nowadays and we can get rid of our disorders. We can use the technique to uproot our disorders. Not only calm our mind through concentration, but also change our thinking and reactions . Uproot those defilements in us. Through Vipassana.
It is a technique that i experienced and that changed my life totally. It is the technique that made me turn to be a Buddhist. Thank you.
