I think the first advice should always be about budget. If the budget is USD 500 and under; I never advise anyone to buy a camera but a good smartphone. A seperate camera only makes sense if you really can achieve a real gain in image quality, and are prepared to take the time to learn the basics of photo and video. If not, a smartphone will give better results.
To me there are only 2 real entry level contenders; Sony APS-C or Fuji (X) APS-C, who are the only 2 companies who actively develop their APS-C system with Fuji taking first place, and are systems you can grow into and expand on. The Canons and Nikons are decent cameras, but their systems are not actively developed and the lens selection really limited. And there is a good second-hand market for Sony and Fuji where you can find good used gear. A benefit of Sony over Fuji is, that you can use their full-frame lenses on their APS-C bodies, and make the transition to full-frame with time, without having to change lenses.
I think a Fuji XS-20 is also an excellent choice that would fit in this list, and may even top this list in features and value for money. Pair that camera with a Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 lens and you have a great versatile starter kit.

Hi there and thanks for the comment. Here in lies an endless debate. Everyone is going to feel like I left out a camera. There are so many options out there that it would be impractical for me to include more than I already did. The idea is not that one should only buy one of these three, but instead take a lesson from how these cameras are compared and then apply those lessons to whatever cameras you are interested in. I hope that answers your question as to our methodology.
