wasn't until the time of the crusades that priests could not get married, many priests were second or third sons of family's with wealth, the first son would inherit the wealth and then die in the crusades, the second son would become a priest, but by banning marriage their wealth would go to the church instead of their children when marriage was banned
In the show and in real life. As a person who has studied early British history the way this show weaves fiction with actual historical record is incredible.
Just as a side note, Erik and Siegfried are fictional characters, as are Uhtred and his crew, but many of the other characters are real, historical characters who existed in this timeline (unlike the show "Vikings" which inexplicably takes historical characters & events that occurred centuries apart and pretends they were contemporary with one another). Alfred, as I am sure you know, was one of England's greatest Kings - in fact he is known as "Alfred the Great", and part of the reason he comes across as so paranoid and stressed is because this period was highly volatile. He had defeated the main threat of "The Great Heathen Army", which would've seen England extinguished altogether, but having done so he dreamed of being able to unite all 4 kingdoms of England as "one nation under one god". He was desperate to bring peace to the land and, whilst his introduction of the Danelaw (effectively a line drawn across England which allowed the Danes to live in peace on 1 side and the Saxons to live in peace on the other) meant many of the Viking invaders had settled, he was no nearer to the unification of England he wanted so badly. New raiders were arriving repeatedly and the Danes who had settled within the Danelaw offered no resistance to them whatsoever, allowing them a foothold in the country. From their camps deep within the Danelaw they would launch raids into Wessex constantly, and it was up to men like Uhtred to patrol the borders of Wessex and keep them at bay. Having come so close to total destruction and successfully fighting back from the brink, you can imagine how stressful all the constant unrest must have been for Alfred. Then there was Aethelwold. Aethelwold was indeed Alfred's nephew who did indeed believe himself the rightful heir to the throne. He was probably a little younger than he is depicted in this show and would've been too young to be King of Wessex when his father, Alfred's brother, Aethelred died. Nevertheless, Aethelwold did begin to cause a great deal of unrest in 9th/10th century England. His cousin, Alfred's daughter Aethelflaed, was also a very real person and is one of England's greatest, yet lesser known, monarchs, partly because she never ruled in Wessex (where almost all of our historical texts from this time came from). In real life she was married off to an Aethelred of Mercia, but there is no actual evidence that the real Aethelred was as horrible as the one portrayed in TLK. Indeed, upon Aethelflaed's death in AD918 she requested to be buried alongside her husband Aethelred who had himself been dead for almost a decade, so he cannot have been too bad and she must've loved him on some level. When Aethelred died, she became the "Lady of Mercia" and was one of England's most loved rulers. You have to understand that Mercia was right in the centre of England and bordered Wessex to it's south, the hostile Welsh to its North and West, and the hostile Danes to the North and East. "Mercia" literally translates to "Borderland" and it was an area of extreme unrest throughout this period, acting as a buffer zone for the more powerful, dominant Wessex in the South. When Aethelred died in 911, many lords of Mercia believed they needed a strong leader to replace him in order to keep Mercia's enemies at bay. Nevertheless, it was the lady Aethelflaed who stepped up and she not only succeeded in repelling attacks from Vikings and Welsh, she consolidated Mercia's power in the region once again and managed to fairly successfully unite both its Saxon residents and the Danes who had settled there also. Haesten, the Viking whom Uhtred rescued from the uprising in York and who is now buddied up with Erik and Siegfried, is another genuine historical character. He was a well known Viking chieftain and raider of the mid-late 9th century. As a young man he was present with Bjorn Ironside (from the show "Vikings") on his raids in the Mediterranean and he eventually came to England right when these events in Series 2 are taking place - in the 890's. The English town "Hastings", made famous from the Norman invasions and "The Battle of Hastings" in 1066, is actually named after him. I would think it would've given him a huge amount of amusement that the town bearing his name, about 150 years after his death, became known as the place where Anglo-Saxon England would finally be defeated for good! There are many, many more, but the historical characters are just as interesting as they are shown to be in this show, and it is partly why I love TLK so much as it does a great job of fleshing them out without feeling the need to bend reality in order to fit the fiction. It does, as you would expect, exercise some artistic license in this respect but, by and large, it bends the fiction to fit the reality rather than the other way around (as in Vikings).
Funny thing about the three spinners, the Kurgans arrived in Europe about 3500 BC from the Eastern Steppe, they brought with them a religion that spread accross Europe, the Greek gods have striking similarities with Viking or Norse gods, the three spinners have a parralel with the three grey witches or Phorcides from greek mythology also in Gaelic and Celtic religion. Witches came in three's so you are short a woman on your team.
Expect the time skips to continue, since the book series is narrated by Uthred as a man in his 80s recounting his life story, so he starts as a young child and gets older each book. Pretty sure by the latest season he should be well into his forties or fifties, not that he looks or fights any different. I keep wondering if they'll ever put some grey in his hair to acknowledge how much time has passed in series.
I totally understand Brida's anger and sadness 😭😭.. But her words to Uthered she should have tell them to herself.. She pushed Ragnar to that so called Danes alliance... Just a viper's nest.
Just as an FYI Catholic priests were allowed to marry until around 1600s when the pope decided that they couldn't so that the church could inherit anything that was given to the priest by another person. Essentially anything that the priest had no longer would go to his family but to the church, but yes in this time period there was most definitely marriage as it was part of the Bible to seek a wife and have children as a part of keeping God's Commandments
it doesn't make much sense in the show but in the books, Uthred is the cousin of Athelflaed new husband on his mother's side, so he does have a claim as king of Mercia. Watching the show I didn't understand any of this storyline but in the books it is logical.
Both of you beautiful ladies I don't understand why you pick such bad content to react to when it's a lot of really great series like Love Craft Country, Queen Gambit, Bridgerton, Watchmen, Mandalorian and etc... I did watch you back when you was Watching Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. I usually check to see what you lovely ladies are reacting to but it's never what I want to watch not to say you have bad taste but I'm hoping you react to WanadaVision next week or something that I can watch with you two.

Respectfully, your implication that this is a bad show is sadly disagreeable to me... Furthermore, a few shows you listed such as The Mandalorian and Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul are pretty popular. Not saying they aren’t good, but pointing out obvious highly regarded shows as an example against TLK or any other show they react to, just makes this seem more about you wanting them to react to shows you like rather than just letting them react to the shows that they pick to do. It’s unfortunate you don’t see the value in watching some of these shows, most relevant it’s a shame you don’t like The Last Kingdom. I feel it’s a great show and deserves a lot more love and appreciation. Hopefully in the future they’ll react to something you like :)
@@granddaddyotaku636 it seem that I hit a nerve in you on my assessment of this show and by your somewhat passionate reaction should look at my statement closer which I will because I don't have any knowledge of this show because I never cared to watch it therefore my judgement is flawed and I have to retract my opinion that is so shallow and without any honest criticism and must be retracted until further investigation... Now does that satisfy your desire to defend your source of entertainment.
Regarding Aethelwold’s deteriorating appearance; the actor said in an interview that he was made-up to look like he suffered from some sort of STD

Well, that sucks.
@@dwnkaomwn3953 for real. Denying people's natural sexual drive is crazy. Good for them if they were asexual, not sexually attracted to anyone, then
Aethelwold was not done wrong, his father Aethelred the king did not see him fit to be King he choose his brother Alfred to be his successor.

Celibacy's in priest didn't become a thing until the late 1100 to early 1200s I believe. This show takes place in the 900s.
I am being pedantic, I know, but the show takes place in the late 800s (9th Century). Only season 4 is early 900s

11:20 The "three spinners" is probably a reference to the Norns, the weavers of fate. They are similar to the fates in Greek mythology, yes.
My fave part to the week! 💜

It is three years later after the events of the previous episode. Important to remember Father Pyrlig’s background.
Uhtred....Finan.......Sitric.......and........ I love this 4 some :)
Not all priest are the same, some can marry depending on the vow they have taken under God.
I think the time skipping can be explained because each season is apparently based on 2 books each, so we would be into book 4 of the series.
