This was one of the most impressive and gorgeous voices I ever heard in performance; he had it all and could actually stand close to the choir during the biggest scenes in Don Carlos and Boris and project easily - like a bass trombone - without forcing at all - a jaw dropping experience. Even his speaking voice was a marvel of beauty and resonance. Thank you so much for sharing!
I just realized that you haven't posted in about a year. I just discovered your channel and it seems as if it is dedicated to the greatest bass in the 20th century, Nicolai Ghiaurov. I have never seen this performance and it is one of the most glorious accounts of this man's artistry. I cried when I heard the Don Carlo aria and again in the Boccanegra one. No one sang Boris better than Ghiaurov. I was in a production of Boris Godunov in San Francisco in the early 1980's with Ghiaurov. I played a small role but working with this man was awe inspiring; so kind and generous. He acted as if you were a friend even though he could not speak English very well. We got on okay in my broken Italian. I will cherish that memory forever. Thank you for this fantastic performance. Bravo!

Dieses Konzert kenne ich nur aus dem TV. 1969 war ich dann endlich im Deutschen Museum in München bei seinem 2. Konzert drin. 1961 war Ghiaurov zum ersten Mal im deutschen TV zu sehen bei einem Konzert aus Varna/Bulgarien. Er sang damals auch das Rondo, die Verleumdungsarie und Philipp II. Bis jetzt ist leider noch kein Band davon aufgetaucht.

This is marvelous. PS Someone at the Bavarian Radio and TV must have the FULL video of the Leontyne Price recital in the same hall in Jan.1968. It was broadcast and two snippets of that performance are on UA-cam. But the whole thing would be splendid.
Thank you so much for posting this concert! I searched UA-cam and this was the first thing that came up this morning. This is a phenomenal concert. Ghiaurov is in his prime here, and of course he was a legend. This whole concert is outstanding though. Wonderful repertoire choices, wonderful orchestra and chorus, and of course one of the great conductors.
