Hi
Ok, first of all, no... I did not had a clue how was done, never worked on one of this before... I know have better idea of what is involved, even though, at the point when this was uploaded, I still don't know exactly how is done...
Anyway, watch the video so the above makes sense...
The issue, this Skoda came to me as a non runner... would crank, but no start... not even attempt...
Follow me on this video to find out what was the problem and how to resolve it.
NOTE: It is actually possible to clone the ecu, but the read OTP needs to be modified when write back...
There is information out there on how to do it and which software to use...
Solder and de-solder:
• How to desolder and so...

Hello, I just found your channel a few days ago, and have really enjoyed watching your diagnosis and repairs.
Some time ago I had a Bosch ecu (don't remember which) in for repair, with a no communication problem. As a long shot, I replaced the electrolytic capacitors, and it ended up solving the problem.
On another video, you replaced a custom Bosch chip, relay driver. I have had problems removing those ic, because of needing a ton of heat. After that, I found a good deal on Ebay for a board heater AOYUE INT 853. It's really useful for heating up the bottom of the ecu (85-100C), while you remove a chip on the top, with the heat gun.
Thanks for your videos!
Yes... the preheating units can be quite handy...

the famous otp zone which causes a lot of difficulty! Swap a tricore is rather risky, you have to master the soldering iron. good job !

I am surprised that you didn't look at the broken one more closely. I love it when you say let's take it to bit. I though outcome would be a leaking capacitor some were near can low wire in ecu.as it was being pulled lower than it should. As you know sometimes powering on and off can make a cap come back to life and then die again . I love you're. Vids and get great joy watching them .
Yes... I actually checked a couple things on it... but nothing obvious...

On some cars the radiator fans running with ignition ON is indication that there is no comms with ECU - safety future to not overheat engine, if was running. Also the gateway is a bridge between CAN lines of different speed, so that is why there is 0 or 1 in live data.

Would it have been possible to buy the complete set from Germany of the key fob, ecu and replace them all? Basically giving the car a new identity really.
Possibly...

Great work Lewis as always
Do you know what exactly failed on the circuit board? I was surprised that MCU was good despite reading failures
Off camera I measured the CAN line inside the module... and was all the way up to the MCU...
I assumed was power related...
Being a multilayer board, did not wanted to waste too much time with it...
And I have a board for spares now...🤪
👍👍👍
Great demonstration!
Is there any chance that the problem was the Microcontroller from the beginning, and if you changed only the MC and not the Eeprom/Flash,it would work ?
Not that simple...
Changing the whole MCU, which obviously contains the flash and the eprom solved the issue, so was nothing wrong with the original MCU...
Thank you for watching!
nice work .... thanks for this superb video

Pretty much yes...
Some you can by swap the eeprom only...

on a PASSAT TDI it gives me the error of not communicating with the PCM and also de-energized the power relay PCM ECM too early. can they be the same cause? Greetings from Argentina and thank you for your collaboration
Hi bro..
i think you didn't backup the old ecu correctly that was a problem and you need to use BDM adapters that's very important.. you doing the right job well done and thanks
Hi
No, is more complicated than that...
You don't always need the BDM adaptors to read or write an ecu...
If you dig a bit more into this type of modules, with the OTP area, you will understand...
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
Well done for sticking with the problem, Luis. I see you have swapped the big controller chip but I can't think what was going on. I do understand copying and writing eeproms as I have just built 3 reader/writers to pull data off old chips that I wrote many years ago. I would be interested to hear from you if you have more info on this repair.
There is an OTP (One Time Programmable) area on this MCU...
You can read the data, but you can't write nothing back...
And guess what data is in this area?
Immo data...
That's why you can't just copy and write...
In very simple terms...
There is a way that involves place the data outside the OTP, and make the ecu to read that area as the OTP...
There is softwares out there... a bit of investigation and you will find all the info...
Hope that helps.
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
@@LMAutoRepairs Thanks for the explanation, Luis...I understand now.

How to find a failure ECU chips and eeprom.
When using "Quick Connect" on Launch (the Artipad is a very expensive Launch), under "System Selection" it will only list the previous ECU's that it was able to connect to in the previous session. Annoying sometimes but if you think about it, it is sensible. I think they were mainly thinking of reconnecting quickly when looking at live data on intermittent faults and not missing modules.
Thanks for the info...
I did not had it for long to be able to get used to it, and explore it fully...
👍👍👍
@@LMAutoRepairs I've been looking at the "KTM-Bench" as a cheap solution for the EDC17's. Looks like they are going to be a problem. Not just dead ECUs but all sorts of weird faults they get. Usual German quality.

Funny, I was thinking that the only thing left to do is hope the processor is good and swap it. And it worked!! My question now is, what failed and is it repairable?
Ken Lange the CAN transceiver had failed as per the original oscilloscope diagnosis, it’s about £5 and usually a SOIC8/16 package.
You have swapped the processors but in the end, I didn't understand which data you are using on the EEPROM to start the car. The original one or the one from the spare ECU?
The original MCU on tye replacement ECU...
😉👍👍👍
Things I noticed. When you first switched on the car with the original ecu. There was no check engine light.. This was or would've been my first clue..
😊
Correct...

I would be thankful and grateful if you make a video teaching us of how CAN Network works & how to measure resistance between terminals 6 and 14? & what does 60-Ohm mean between those two pins on the DLC? & if one of the ECUs, not communicating will the resistance measurement change, or will be the same? & What should be the voltage on the CANs? what's the difference between CAN-H and CAN-l, because that's where I have problems understanding the whole story! you want you can answer me here. i have this same problem that nobody can fix, would you be able to help me please?
i have another ecu and im willing to send to you.
Yes, OTP One Time Programming areas in infineon tricore MCU dont let clone this ECU's family, the question is, i saw that OBD check light in dash is ON so ecu is powering up, could you see if u could repair it by finding and try to replace can bus transceiver chip? sure the problem isn't in the MCU/software, becase in new ecu works.
Some time ago i repaired a no CAN communicating fiat BSI with NEC MCU that's not clonable by replacing the TJA1040 chip.
Yes... i repaired them in the past with the same problem...
The can on this one was all the way up to the mcu... no problem there...
It was possible power issues to the mcu or something along those lines...
Without diagrams on a multilayer ecu there is only so much you can do... at least in an acceptable timescale...

U cant clone MEDC17 just like that, because MPC has OTP area. u have 3 options only: 1. swap MPC, 2. do immo off on new ECU, or u can prepare a immo file from both eeprom reads

hi ..... the writing on the ECU you bought from ebay , has the pin code written on it , 9558 , i belive ;) ....
would the ECU still have worked if you had just swapped the chip in the first place and not bothered reading and writing the code(s) on the chip? It might be obvious but i'm not sure. Thanks..
Yes... it would...
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
hi, from my little knowledge of micro controllers, there are parts of a chip that can not be read or even written to, Microchip PIC MCU,s for instance (and undoubtedly other manufacturer types) have fusible bits in them (set on the very first upload of code) so as to protect the data on the chip and give copyright protection of that code and stop counterfieting of electronic products etc and I suspect that's what is going on here, except for a slightly different reason, immobiliser etc...
Yes... correct... the only thing is the data can be read... but not written...
Still, there is a solution on these, which is write the immo data outside the OTP area...
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
What are my options on a no comm ME 17.5.6?
I did manage to upload the configuration to the "cloud" using ThinkTool PROS (It would run and communicate at times, but not anymore). I have ECU with the same number on order. Thank you in advance.
Hi
The ME17 is not that easy...
With certain tools, it can be cloned, but the conventional way of transferring the data from one to another will not work...
That is why I did what I did on this video, and I have explained the reasons...
