I am a 30 year Datsun tech, let me know if you have any questions! Used to work at Z-Whizz in San Diego. For 16 years! I love people are still into These! Great work!
Great choice sticking with the L28! Your methodical and meticulous approach to your builds is always a pleasure to watch. Keep sharing this awesome content with us!
The fuel available in the 70's was fine. The reason for lower compression was the less developed emission control systems. With the advent of electronic ignition, fuel injection and computer control of engines the compression was raised to take advantage of more precise control over the combustion process. Thus we had the bonus of improved power, emissions and economy. Today we have crazy power out of small engines precisely because of these advances in electronics and engine management. The gas today is just the same as in the 70s when we went to unleaded for all new cars.
like that idea of the L28. I have the same model cylinder head (from a 84 maxima) you have on my ZX 280z block. It works very well. I have the stock pistons (dished). if you had the block and head resurfaced you may want to check out the cam pattern on the rocker to make sure the contact patch is centered. You can get shims if needed to move the cam towers up if the timing chain is too loose or cam is too retarded. I have an L28 turbo setup on my engine run stand that I plan to put in the Z soon, but for now that combo is so good I am in no hurry.
Worlftechologolies is you best best. Maxima diesel crank/ maybe block, i forgot. Research wolf technologies. And /or Z1. Also talk to Charles Park from Power Trix.

No shade to engine swaps but a nicely built L28 is mint. Good choice 🤘
Glad to hear you’re sticking with the L28. More and more I’m feeling that way as well
