Thanks for creating this video. Commentated speedruns are one of my favorite types of content. The underwater reverse caverns always give me the most trouble when I'm going for 200.6%. I always forget that the wolf can swim and have to relearn it by stumbling on it in a guide.
Congratulations. I love when you comment your runs It makes everything crystal clear. Collecting these underwater map tiles in the second castle is a nightmare.
I did a 200.6% speedrun of SotN when I was a kid once. Took me about 2 weeks. After watching this video, I think I could get it down to one week. I suspect Dr4gonBlitz's record will be safe from me for a while yet.
Amazing run! I never knew about the wolf swim tech until watching this. I always gravity jumped and transformed into the wolf after hitting the ceiling to get those annoying map tiles.
At 31:30 a new skip was discovered that if you have a second controller plugged in on Playstation and you hit triangle while on it you can freely break the bridge. It has to do with developer code left in the game.
I’ve been playing SotN once a year since it came out. (I’m one of those weird people who misses “I am the Wind” from the credits.) I’ve never seen Inverted Caverns done so smoothly, and I’ll never be able to do Inverted Colosseum like that. This is legit one of the most impressive videos I’ve ever seen. Please consider more speedrun explanation videos in the future. This was great.
Yes, I completely agree that the Inverted Caverns map tiles were an absolute pain in the ass to get!! I've never speedrun the game but I'm a huge Castlevania fan and have done casual 200.6% playthroughs on PSX and PSP and am currently doing my first full playthrough of the Saturn version with the recent translation patch. I agree that all Relics and Bosses should be part of a "True 100%" run of the game. I'd also add all Max HP and Max Heart power ups and maybe all endings but I'm not sure if either of them would really change the speedrun route aside from adding a few more detours and delays.
Just found your channel looking for SOTN stuff. I have played this game on and off since I was a kid. It is my all time favorite I have never attempted a speed run and probably never will. But I love the videos and what you do I have achieved the 200.6% before but haven’t gone for it in a while. But as a fellow huge fan of the game I say thanks for all you do with it.
The last time I played this game was quite a long time ago, but as soon as you started going for those tiles in the reverse caverns, something immediately came back to me, because despite not remembering a lot, I _do_ distinctly remember those tile being bullshit. I don't think I ever collected them, actually--I just collected enough other tiles to get the other ending.
I'm not a speed runner, and only occasionally do I consume speed run content. But this one held my interest very well. Possibly because it's a game I have a lot of nostalgia for, but I think that it was in no small part due to your excellent explanations and clear mastery of the subject matter.
Really great video. Love your explanations! I'm having a hard time understanding how going out of bounds under the floor and other places is not considered the same thing as "out of bounds".
the "out of bounds" i'm referring to would lead to additional map%. My goal was to only collect intended map tiles, otherwise you can go out of bounds in places like the chapel and get much higher than 200.6%
@@dr4gonblitz Yeah, gotcha, I understand that. It's just hard to make the distinction between "out of bounds map tiles" and "going out of bounds". Probably my OCD kicking -in 🤣. When I was going for the 200% of the game for the first time I remember that I arrived at this part and tried to collect the map blind, I spend 10 to 15 minutes banging my head against this part and after not managing to do it I give up the idea of doing 200% and just collect enough of the map for the "true" ending.

I got obsessed with this game for a few weeks over a decade ago and did a run that collected a bunch of rare weapons and leveled up the familiars and the muramasa a bunch. I remember going through the game and keep checking the map to see if I had all the squares, felt like something I had to complete, and I remember being confused when after being sure that I did pass a place to see that the square wasn't collected, and some other time just barely entering a huge room and already having the whole thing show up in the map, didn't think there was a person who memorized all those details and would do it in this mesmerizing entertaining way, I'm simply in awe during the entirety of the video, even backtracked a few times to check out some of the more amazing moments, really impressive 😮
Not even speedrunning, just trying to get the 200.6%, trying to get the wolf tiles in the caverns was such a pain. Had no idea about the swimming, I would always gravity jump and attempt to transform into wolf RIGHT at the top. -.-
The upside down cavern to get the map tiles underwater are a pain. The only way I could get those was to gravity boost up and morph into the wolf. Love the video.. brings me back to 7th grade lol.
I’ve never done a speed run of any game, but I love this game so I did do a 200.6% and collected all items. I distinctly remember having a heck of a time getting those difficult tiles in the inverted castle. It was really frustrating lol
Waaaaaay back in the day I tried following a few gamefaqs guides to try to reach full 200% map coverage. I don’t remember why but I gave up at around 196%. Probably some secret rooms that I never found out about. Also those gamefaqs guides mentioned the possibility of reaching over 200% and at that point I gave up. I was like “I’ll never understand the mechanics well enough to get there”
At 1:00:16, how could you not kill those Blood Skeletons!? That's the most fun part of this game. Wing smashing or wolf running through all of them. The whole run was ruined! Just kidding. Great job on the run! Oh, and I, too, figured out the swimming wolf map completion trick a few years ago. Not that I've ever speed run this game. It's just a super consistent way of getting map completion.
Man you are one of my favourite UA-camr right now with these fantastic SotN videos. Love watching your stuff, and your commentating is very satisfying!
@57:00 Yes, it's super smooth to Super Jump > Bonk > Transform to wolf (the transform animation, while bonked, "pulls" the camera upward the last few pixels needed to "count" for map tile completion.
Sorry for the confusion@@KejutoJetomo I was referring to what @Dr4gonBlitz was saying in that moment about collecting the obscure map tiles, not commenting on that slice of gameplay footage.
This is a top 5 game for me. I bought it the week it came out on the original PlayStation (yes I'm old) and have completed it to 200.6% three times, but at no point did I do any of it in a hurry like this. Wow! And I figured out the wolf could swim to get these map tiles. I just thought that was known. Interesting!
I have said this to others, but I'm saying it again. They missed out on some fun antics with those imps. Having the Fairy Familiar should have the Imps leave Alucard alone, because they're spending all their efforts attempting to impress the Fairy, while she spins off a list of unique refusal lines. Alternatively, if you have the Demon Familiar, the Imps follow him around like a super boss figure. All fanning over him, while he gets more and more frustrated by their behavior.
Amazing video!! However, I will not tolerate this Familiar slander 😤😤 Faerie familiar at least was instrumental to helping me out since she can heal a lot, get rid of poison, curse and stone effects, give you resistance to things, and revive you if you die. When I was fighting Galamoth, I fought him for like 10 minutes and died JUST before I killed him, and she revived me. Hit him a few more times and killed him. I never switched Familiars since
I actually had to google how to get the map completions in the reverse underground caverns. I've also been playing this game since the 90s and never knew the wolf could swim until just now. I got the completion in those areas by abusing the mechanic where the dog jumps a little higher when you shift into it in the air.
31:18 I saw at GDQ that you can skip that bridge by having another controller plugged in and push X or something. They did a randomizer and mentioned it during the run. This year I think.
That skip was only just discovered December last year. Fairly sure if someone bothers they can beat DB's record with that new trick but AFAIK there's no actual leaderboard for this category... also just in case you missed it... this is Dragonblitz's channel. He's the one who did the Lycanthrope Randomiser on the SGDQ you watched =P
55:03 has been enjoyable, yeah XD I'm not very experienced in speedrunning, and I don't think I'd be able to go with this game of I try starting out, bit it's still really exciting and fun to watch
not resetting when you miss a map tile and going back to the 1st castle at the end, especially if it takes 7 minutes, could have been its own flex considering this beat the cheat time by 10 minutes lmao
I'm curious how fast this run could go if you only checked the map once before the final boss of each castle to prove you got it, never bonked or messed up, and potentially a new glitch like if you could use an item while transformed to restore your MP whenever you wanted
Those map tiles in the caverns are just the worst, i remember being so confused on why they weren't collecting and i thought they were bugged- I didn't know about the wolf swimming mechanic until i realized it was there and had to go back there to get those final ones lol
Everytime when i get to 200,6% - I always missing TWO rooms! Even if i tilt and follow by map - I always missing two rooms. Like a personal curse.. The last time I even asked my wife to help me find these damn squares. She found it, on easy, and she doesn't even play Castlevania
I HATE THOSE MAP TILES! I don't speed run, but I am a huge on completion, so I've done 200.6% several times, and even knowing I could swim as the wolf, it still makes me angry trying to get those tiles.
I actually just posted on reddit a couple days ago where I had 255 potions out of nowhere. I somehow did a glitch with the fairy, but I don't know how I did it.
I did 200.6 percent the game back in the day on ps 1 and also learned the sword brothers glitch to get way more but I forget what my highest percentage was
not a speedrunner per se but i love SotN, but i Love this game, I used to play the "right" way but can't do anymore since the third time i finished (it was way before speedrun was a thing but...) and discovered the death skip(the damage boost one) I finish this game at least once or twice a year (like i said im not a runner), but i know that I can do in a quick sit down nowadays. (I wish I could do the relics skip thats the one i need to train for it)
28:35 I have been playing this game since it came out and somehow I never knew about this secret? Like, what the absolute hell?? (I thought I'd gotten 200.6% before but apparently not.) edit: I also didn't know the wolf can swim. This game, I swear to god

Fairly sure if someone bothers they can beat DB's record with that new trick but AFAIK there's no actual leaderboard for this category... also just in case you missed it... this is Dragonblitz's channel. He's the one who did the Lycanthrope Randomiser on the SGDQ you watched =P
55:03 has been enjoyable, yeah XD
I'm not very experienced in speedrunning, and I don't think I'd be able to go with this game of I try starting out, bit it's still really exciting and fun to watch
Amazing to watch! 🧛♂🍷 (And reminds me, I'd like to make games, and play them, but I'd not want to have to think of all this for speed running!)
i just love how there's someone who as obsessed with symphony of the night as me ( too jealous to say more than me )
Incredible - deserve so many more views :)
Monsters to speed-running Alucard: "Don't turn your back on me!"
not resetting when you miss a map tile and going back to the 1st castle at the end, especially if it takes 7 minutes, could have been its own flex considering this beat the cheat time by 10 minutes lmao
Eres un crack no me canso de ver la habilidad que tienes he visto casi todas tus runs sencillamente genial
I'm curious how fast this run could go if you only checked the map once before the final boss of each castle to prove you got it, never bonked or messed up, and potentially a new glitch like if you could use an item while transformed to restore your MP whenever you wanted
Those map tiles in the caverns are just the worst, i remember being so confused on why they weren't collecting and i thought they were bugged-
I didn't know about the wolf swimming mechanic until i realized it was there and had to go back there to get those final ones lol
I went through hell as well but I managed by sumper jumping, bonking and then double jumping right or left.
I somehow did a glitch with the fairy, but I don't know how I did it.
ok ill suscribe
(I thought I'd gotten 200.6% before but apparently not.)
edit: I also didn't know the wolf can swim. This game, I swear to god
Why jump over the gladius after doppelganger 1? One would think it would be slightly faster to shield dash through it. Or is it a meme?
very nice video. subbed
I played this game from start to finish about 3 times now. I always go out of my way to get all map tiles and I hate the caves.
"Not an expert" 😊
I got my 200.6% back in 2000 or 2001. And I still remember how infuriating Inverted Cavers were.
