    The symptoms you're describing (hair loss on sides, mass on side) sound like the most obvious sign of ovarian cysts in guinea pigs. It is fairly common in female pigs, especially those over 2 years of age. She may need to be spayed to remove the cyst and prevent it from happening again :)

    • @MunchiesPlace

      I was thinking this too since I've dealt with pyometra in syrians. Nowhere did the vet suspect that. However this vet is new and not my regular vets and I was kind of disappointed with her diagnosis upon first glance. So I'm going back to my other vet this time.

    • @skinnypigs1
      @skinnypigs1 5 років тому +14

      Agree Larissa. Ultrasound or xray can show cysts and sometimes they can even be felt by the vet. My girl who had cysts had hair loss on her flanks and was very dominant and humpy. Spaying is a great option for a younger pig and a healthier one. For senior sows sometimes the best bet is hormones via implant or injection.

    • @MunchiesPlace
      @MunchiesPlace  5 років тому +17

      See she felt it (vet that is), told me it's abnormal BUT was more concerned with her hair loss & it's in our paperwork we took home from the vets. I feel that wasn't right. If there is a mass, that's #1 priority, not the hair loss. I feel like i just wasted money to be told it could be mites, or we need a skin sample if it ain't and next time we are in, to check out her stomach too. Yeah i'm definitely seeing my regular vet no matter. -_-

    • @skinnypigs1

      @@MunchiesPlace Hopefully your regular vet will make you feel more comfortable :) I know I like seeing the same lady all the time and when I see another vet for after hours, it just isn't the same.
      That is very odd they would not give meds for both the pigs for mites just to take care of that right off the hop!
      You will get it sorted out!
      P.S. Those ladies are gorgeous!!

    I’m glad you’ve decided to take them in I have a few suggestions though. The 2 hides are perfect for the size but...they only have 1 opening. Because 2 guinea pigs are in 1 cage, 1 is going to be more dominant than the other. So when the less dominant one goes in the hide with a single entrance and the more dominant one comes in wanting the hide there’s no way for the the less dominant to get out. It’s best to have a hide with 2-3 exits for escape roots.

    • @MunchiesPlace
      @MunchiesPlace  5 років тому +26

      Trying here. We do not have the supplies for those type of hides at the moment when we first took them on. I've already made a wishlist for them for the rescue. Will hopefully be adding more hides for them soon.

    I remember when we had a pack guinea pigs at school... (Agriculture School...so no we did not just have 10 classroom pets :p ) and they got mites... so we had to treat the entire pack...
    To make it even more awkward we had just adopted out a female to someone who needed a new companion for a recently "widowed" piggy, so we had to pay for treatment of their two guinea pigs too...
    I think it may have been about 10-15 guinea pigs at the time, most of them living together in a large pen but I do belive we also treated our males too (who lived alone because male guinea pigs tend to fight when there's females around and we couldn't keep them in the female pen for banging reasons...) so the vet just came to us with their gear instead of bringing all the pigs to them.
    So that was an interesting (if unintentional) class on why quarantine is important.

    My bird cheesecake fell ill this month and almost died bc a vet kept acting like she knew what she was doing instead of just telling me it was out of their experience to help. They kept giving me meds and almost killed her with blood work. After that I left and I am now seeing an avian specialist that ONLY treat birds. They’re actually taking care of her and she’s much better now. I’m pretty sure she’s gonna make it where as the last vet I was certain she was going to pass. It’s amazing what a vet who cares can do ❤️

    (Just a few friendly tips :) ) they need a LOT of hay, by that I mean PILES! They love hay and it is 80% of their diet. I find that the bottom of an under bed storage box with a doorway cut in the side is best :). Also, they absolutely LOVE tunnels and it’s so fun watching them run through them! Also, when/if you get fleece, get pee pads too. They’re like smaller fleeces (idk what you know so sorry if I keep going on 😂) they’re good to put around areas where they pee a lot (by food, in beds, under water bottle, etc.) Also, my guinea pigs like cuddly toys (that are safe) they like to cuddle with them so if you have any old teddy bears hanging around they would greatly appreciate them :) . Thank you for being an amazing (temporary) piggie parent.

    I’ve commented before; I have six cavies right now, and three of them are fosters. I have them all in my 3x5 C&C with six hides (4 are the sticks on wires that you can bend, 2 are wooden houses with one entrance). They are doing great together. One of the fosters is a neutered male; everyone else is female. The youngest is maybe about 2 (and a foster), while the oldest is going on 5 (and belongs to me).
    One of the first guinea pigs we rescued was underweight and had a bladder infection or stones or something. I spent a lot of money on the vet trying to get her well, hand feeding her Critical Care every 2 hours, etc. Six months or so I cared for her, and she eventually gave up.
    Four years ago we took in a pair of older males, brothers. I had all males at the time. One of the boys had a skin condition and a heart condition, plus he got impacted a lot. He didn’t cost tons to care for as it was all pretty straightforward, but they were sanctuary pigs that I cared for until they passed. The ill brother was nearly 6 when he passed, and the other boy thrived for another year after I moved him in with my boys. (That was a rough year; I lost my favourite guy about a month before I gave birth to my son, then that fall one of my other boys got sick and died, then we lost the rescue boy, and then the other rescue. Then I adopted two girls and housed them right next door to my remaining male, and he was closing in on 7 years old when he passed. My oldest pig right now is the remaining girl from that pair.)
    Anyway, yay for piggies!
    Also, wire cage bottoms are really bad for guinea pigs.

    So glad they're in the best care while they're waiting for their forever home! As a long term piggie owner, those hidies need more than 1 escape hole! If there's two piggies in the cage they might fight in the hidies if they can't easily leave! Pro tip for anyone getting piggies to own, use fleece bedding all the way! It's a little expensive at the start but cheaper than sawdust ect in the long term. Plus you don't have to check their "bits" to make sure there's nothing stuck which is better for both of you! I so wish I was in the USA so these babies could join my heard❤️

    I definitely understand the hay price for sure. I found out hay by the "grab and go" 50lbs for $15-20 from farmers co ops and freeze it for 24-48hrs. It won't risk mites or parasites that way. My two rabbits eat it the whole thing in 5-6wks.

    Thank you SO MUCH for giving those piggies the care that they need, especially in an emergency situation like this.
    I’m kind of guinea pig crazy so I have two tips for you:
    For hides, try to look out for hides with two entrances or more. Piggies will sometimes get into squabbles with each other over dominance or food and one-entrance hides can allow one of them to be trapped by the other. Hides with two or more entrances stop this issue from happening and have the added benefit of better air flow. If you want to save money you can make these hides out of cardboard boxes by cutting the flaps off, turning it upside down so that it has an open bottom and cutting two or more doorways. These boxes provide excellent enrichment because they can double as chews (so long as there is no tape within their reach).
    Another tip I have for you is hat racks. I can see that you’ve used a glass jar as a temporary one which is a clever idea but I worry about arguments because it looks like only one piggie can eat at a time and potentially piggies getting stuck in the jar. You can by wooden hay racks or make your own out of any leftover corroplast you have. Hay racks keep the hay off the ground so that it doesn’t get urine or farces on it and they help limit waste. Most of them are large enough to allow multiple piggies to eat at once. When they are designed right, they can also lower the risk of hay eye pokes.
    Great job looking after those piggies, I hope the vet visits go well :)

    My vets are brilliant, one time when I first got my guineapigs (they've passed now unfortunately) we were getting my four cats vaccinated and because my piggies were new babies to the home I wanted them to have a check up at the same time, which would normally be a £30 check up they always did it for free for me and gave me discounts when they were sick because we took really good care of them and the vets were always really impressed.

    Your guinea pig impression is spot on XD Also, try avoiding citrus fruits and fruits alltogether, they are too acidic and have too much sugar for guinea pigs, citrus fruits aren't even good for treats, vegetables is where it's at, bellpepper, romane lettuce, (carrots in moderation, cucumbers etc)

    • @englishrider91
      @englishrider91 5 років тому

      Channel Ninbikun I don't know about citrus, but guinea pigs can have fruit once or twice a week. I’m not entirely certain of everything that’s safe, but. Guinea Links has a list of what's safe.

      @@englishrider91 They can have fruits as treats, they do like them because they are sweet, but they get all the vitamins they need from vegetables too. Fruits are like fast food for them.

    • @englishrider91
      @englishrider91 4 роки тому

      Channel Ninbikun I don't think it's necessarily like fast food for them--it provide neutriance to them--it’s just that too much fruit isn't good for them--too much of a good thing. It's not completely devoid of good things for them--it just messes them up if they have it too often. I wouldn't eliminate it from a GPs diet altogether--just limit it.

    I would ask about reproductive problems like ovarian cysts. They can be really hard to diagnose but if you suspect it you might have to get her spayed. Unfortunately female piggies have alot of reproductive systems problems. That is the first thing I thought of when you mentioned hair loss.

    • @MunchiesPlace
      @MunchiesPlace  5 років тому +2

      Females in general have it absolutely hard. I actually was suspecting this since I'm so use to syrians with pyometra and having hair loss in that general area makes me think a hormonal problem is occuring and something may be going wrong with her female parts. So I'm really going to push that on the vets this time. I may try to see my original vet too since I didn't really like this new vet.

Check LA Guinea Pig Rescue videos for proper dosage and frequency. Ringworm is also easy to control with any athlete's foot cream and baths with miconazole shampoo. My baby girl has a mass she could have gone into surgery but the mass was located near an artery she has hair loss and itching. It’s probably ovarian cysts and remember to see a vet who sees exotic animals and specialize in guinea pig care

      They are lovely little animals. They do require a good amount of work and funds for food, bedding and hide huts, and vet care. And they need quite a large cage. But if you do a lot of research and are well prepared, knowing what to expect then they make really nice pets. 🙂

    I rescued a bunny with the same cage, and cleaning it was AWFUL. I know that these are guinea pigs and not rabbits, but I was forced to use it for a while despite it being too small for my foster, and what I did was only use bedding in his litter box. However, I'm currently using pine horse bedding PELLETs, for the bottom of his litter now (with aspen shavings on top), and they don't cake like that nasty paper does. One bag cost about five bucks if you look in the right place, if you put stuff on the top, you'll never smell pine, and it's very absorbent. It doesn't cake and it turns into this almost sawdust texture after becoming wet, then dries back out. You could try that on the bottom first, and see if that helps with the problem a little.

    Walmart brand pet food is the absolute worst for small animals, especially guinea pigs. We once had an emergency where we had to get guinea pig pellets from Walmart and it was dreadful. It was so pale in color, dusty, and very poor in quality.. I made sure to switch them as soon as possible and when I did, I got ride of the Walmart pellets completely. After that experience I always make sure to keep an extra bag of oxbow pellets for emergency use only.

    Tips: guinea pigs need unlimited hay available, water bowls instead of bottles, most importantly they NEED to get spayed because they are prone to complications as they grow older. They are so cute and affectionate and love cuddles

    totally unrelated to the video, but you should review the midwest critterville cages! they're tiny, and seem to be popping up a lot in my recommended when i go on amazon. theyre geared towards kids (one has butterflies all over it, the other is a race car) and seem to be low quality. may be worth spreading awareness on!

    Hey can anyone give me some care tips for Guinea pigs, my sister adopted one but didn’t do any research. I would really like to know
    1. How big of a cage should one male guinea pig have?
    2. What is the best food?
    3.What are some sicknesses we should look out for?
    Thank you!

    • @Dilf_Lover29
      @Dilf_Lover29 4 роки тому +1

      I have 6 guinea pigs and have raised them for the past 5 years so I may be able to help a bit.
      1. The minimum cage space for me for one pig would be a midwest cage, but bigger is always better. My favorite being c&c cages since you can customize them anyway you like.
      2. I recommend Oxbow's (I think that's how it's spelled ) brand of pellets and hay are my favorite to use, but I mostly give veggies than pellets.
      3. Not sure about illnesses to look up since I've never had really sick ones and have only dealt with mites in my time but theirs lots of info on guinea pig illnesses online.
      Thats all I can think of for now so I might edit this comment hope it helps. Also is your sister's guinea pig by itself for a reason? Because guinea pigs are herd animals and need to be with other piggies because they can get really lonely and depressed even. I have a male of my own who's by himself but that's because he's aggressive with other guinea pigs and attacks them, but I was wondering if that was your piggies case or something

      edgy depressed kid Thank you so much for the information! By the way he is alone because we adopted him from a pet smart and he came alone also as I mentioned she didn’t do any research so I guess she just doesn’t know they need groups. But thank you for you help I am really trying to give her pet the best possible life!

    Munchie, I've a situation. I've a neutered male guinea pig. I've tried to bond him with many different pigs at the rescue. Males, fixed females and even male babies. And he has rejected and attacked every pig I've tried bonding him with.
    Hes quite literally bitten chunks off of a couple of them, one being a baby. Hes perfectly fine with humans he never bites people. But other guinea pigs he attacks. Hes even attacked his mirror.
    What should I do? Hes getting very stressed from the bonding attempts but I dont want him getting depressed from being alone. I dont know what to do, should I just keep him alone since that seems to be what he wants?

    I have three males and they are a lot of money the hay is a lot and they go through it fast I’ve spent over 1k on vet bills alone because all my piggies are special needs and the One thing could be the oils in the skin building up because my one guinea pig had that and I was concerned I thought you know what if this is cancer but it happened to be basically a guinea pig pimple that they had to squeeze all the excess oil’s because they naturally produce oil’s on their skin to keep their skin clean and sometimes it built up so hopefully that’s all it is

    Try buying Horse Hay by the 50 lb bale instead. Horse hay has to meet certain standards so will be safe and very nutritious, unlike cattle hay etc. 1 bale is usually anywhere from $5-15 depending on where u live. I get mine from an Agway around here that carries it. Calling any horse farms or country feed stores will point u in the right direction... It will save a TON of $$ and is completely safe :) I Have raised horses, and rabbits both. That's how I saved $$ w my rabbits. Buying it by the bag after growing up on a farm and knowing hay well does not seem reasonable to me :)
