  • Welcome back to a rescue introduction video of a new hamster here at my small mammal rescue I run. Sometimes we rescue those in desperate need of help or those who're about to become homeless due to no fault of their own. Today's story isn't bad nor good and is simply a misinformed owner who was impulsive. Sometimes rescuing doesn't need to always be sad and sometimes the animal was taken care of. Enjoy today's story about our newest boy, Dumbo.
Awareness for proper care needs to be shared. It can easily be accessible online, however google search results don't always show good care information which ends up misguiding people. While the owners simply "didn't care" about their hamsters and wanted to profit off of their suffering, not everyone who has bad care is a bad person. SO KEEP THIS IN MIND! They may just need guidance and understanding.

Something I forgot to mention during the video introducing Dumbo was that he was never named by the previous owners. We picked out the name Dumbo because we loved his big ears, but it's sad to learn they didn't even call him anything when they had him for those 2 months. Just breaks my heart sometimes when someone is uninterested in the animals i care for but at least the new intake story isn't as bad as we've seen them.

I recently rescued a male robo with neurological issues and overgrown nails, managed to get a vet appointment for tomorrow morning. The owners thought it was a female Russian Campbell and that kind of gives you the answer to whether they did research. Luckily they are very kind and genuine people who are quite happy that I now have him to meet his needs and want to know what happens after he sees the vet

Not trying to be mean, but hopefully you're serious. There are way too many trolls or people looking for likes and/or money here on the internet and I just want to make sure it's going to be legit.
I've been planning a rescue, foster, and rehabilitation center for Bettas and nano aquaria for about a year now. I am always that person who makes sure he has everything first before I even remotely consider starting up the rescue, which will be licensed by the way. I will have a UA-cam channel similar to Munchie's, social media for the rescue, a GoFundMe page to help support the business, a website, and some miscellaneous stuff like an Etsy account for selling art of the Bettas (and occasionally other animals) that were adopted. This includes paintings, sketches/drawings, and high-quality pictures of the fish, some using the recently purchased macro lens. I've been planning this for about a year now, as this is the most responsible thing to do. Just because you see someone else successfully rescued Hamsters absolutely does not mean you can do it. The rescue business is extremely difficult, expensive, and time-consuming. I should know since I've had several rescues being run for Rats, Mice, Goldfish, and Hermit Crabs! Just hoping you know what you may be getting into. It's definitely not as easy as many of us make it seem. 😉

We had been talking about getting a hamster and we wound up getting one about a month ago. I did some research on hamsters and knew what kind of bedding and wheel to get. Unfortunately we wound up getting a 20 gallon based on pet smart employees recommendation. (We have since upgraded to a 40 gallon) I got so mad the they were trying to push the tiny tails cages on us and got upset we said we would be going with a tank (safer we have cats). They told us it didn't matter because we were getting a dwarf winter white and he could live in there 😡😡😡😡 so happy I knew better then that. If any one is wondering we named him Bubba ❤🐹

3 days ago I was on craigslist and found an ad for 2 free female robo's. They were in the TinyTale's rocket cage. 😡 We drove an hour to get them and when we picked them up the cage was such a mesh and smelled SO bad. There was no bedding on top and there was less than an inch of bedding on the bottom. There was only a "Hole Log" on the bottom and the owner had taken out the wheel. The owner gave us a bag with 2 tiny hamster balls and wait for it...... 3 BAGS OF OXBOW FOOD 😤😠. We also found a Petsmart hamster guide at the bottom of the bag. The owner told us he had them since November and had NEVER touched them. I was so enraged. When we brought them home they were so scared. We named them Cupcake and Sprinkles. Cupcakes will sprint away if my hand is anywhere near her and Sprinkles will let me pet her but is still very skittish. We built them a large bin cage that has everything they need with good food. I am worried that they won't run on their wheels and that I will not be able to tame them. Do you have any advice? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

if you have a bath put a towel on the bottom and transport your hamster with an hide or carier put some hide and toy and let them run give them the opportunity to hide so they won’t be that stressed and go in with them and don’t force them to go to you also you can take paper towels and put your sent on it and put them in theirs cage so they get used to you!

The hamster i got on offerup for free came in one of these cages! I got a free aquarium the same day and put him in there. He was totally a impulse pick up for me! But he is in a much better home, I know that. I was worried I wasn't a good owner but his personality has really been shining through and he seems to be very happy now. He enjoys coming and sitting out and eating food and looking at us all.
I love your videos because they help me care for him better. I already knew how to care for rats so it wasn't a crazy difference. Thanks so much for the videos. You and several other UA-camrs helped me give my little impulse addition to the family a better life. He was definitely traumatized and stressed when I got him and his bedding was absolutely disgusting, his water bottle was slimy inside. Poor little guy.

Hey munchie! I cannot tell you how happy I am that you are safe and spreading the joy! People are always like: do your research! But the sad thing is people are spreading mis-information. When I got my first hamster all of the research i did was from books. Sadly, all of the books looked like they’re from the 80’s or 90’s, meaning that they were spreading care from that time. If only I was on UA-cam when I got my first hamster! I look back at the care that I gave to my first hamsters and it makes me sad. If only big chain pet stores would stop selling those terrible products! All they care about is the money and there is proof to that. In PetSmart’s hamster care guide it says not to use cedar shavings, yet they sell them in their store. I hope everyone is staying safe during these times!

My robo lived for a bit over 2 years, and was the absolute sweetest. I don't think he was truly ever tamed completely, but he would come out when he heard my voice, and sit on my hand to eat treats and let me pet him. He never bit, and as you said, really wasn't much of a chewer, although I always had lots of things in his cage for him to nibble on if the mood struck him. I miss him a lot, and definitely think I'll get another robo when the time comes. He was so much fun to watch.

Her name was Pumpkin, she was a Campbells hybrid and I loved her so much. Adopting her was one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had, because she appreciated every single little thing we did for her, and we felt great knowing we gave her the loving home she deserved. I just wanted to say a big thanks, because it's channels like yours that make people aware of small pet adoption and encourage them to rescue an animal in need, rather than just get one from a pet shop. And good luck to little Dumbo! I'm sure he'll find a loving family - such a cutie!

Petsmart is just awful. I’m a reptile person and the way they treat them is sickening. They’re all competing for resources and then when they sell them they give people all the wrong lighting and feeding advice etc.

I rescued a robo hamster that came in this exact cage just another color. She had no wheel , toys and not even an inch of bedding. Unbelievable, she now has a15 gallons bin cage with about 10 inches of bedding and a 6.5 wheel although we are looking for a bigger one. She also has multiple chews. It’s sad that people treat any animal horribly it’s just terrible.

......😑 Seriously, y'all, WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM!? Puppies are not and will never be more important than Hamsters. All life is precious, whether it means being a massive Whale or a tiny piece of aquatic beneficial bacteria (aquarium enthusiasts will know what I mean lol). Seriously, Munchie, good work! Dumbo, among many of the other animals you have rescued, taken in, and/or fostered must all be very thankful for your responsible, loving, caring, and accepting personality! Keep it up! The petsmart and petco in our area aren’t selling any hamsters either. The birds and other animals are still for sale but the smaller rodents aren’t for sale. Which kind of stinks because I been preparing for one for months. With your channel’s help. Lots of stuff! So I can wait and can’t wait to bring one home in a great space. 😊 I am going to check the local animal shelter and see if they have any for adoption.

I’ve had her for 3 months :) and she’s never bit me and she’s fully trained. When my mum got her she came home with a tiny tale cage and I told my mum that that’s wayyy to small for them she was in the for 2 hours while we went to the shops to get a new bigger cage ! It was huge we measured it it is about 700 square inches of floor space! Your videos helped me a lot :)

Okay this is kind of unrelated but its making me annoyed. My "friends" mom were having a baby and they also had 2 pugs. They had those pugs for years, but they were scared that those pugs might not be "nice" to the baby so they rehomed them. Then, may I add, they got a ST BERNARD! They said its because the kids were sad without a dog so her husband got a puppy St Bernard. That was a couple if years ago. But I have been informed by my best friend, who has one of the kid's number, that they got rid if Bear (the st Bernard) because he was too much work AND NOW HAVE A NEW PUG! IM SO ANNOYED AT THEN I CANT EVEN- Let's just say that when I meet them again we are going to have " a little chat " anyway thank you for your time. Have a good day/night.

I never understood why someone couldnt have a hamster and a dog. That just sounds like an excuse to me because I have a small dog and 2 cats along with 3 hamsters who are well cared for and secure in their own bin cages. When we socialize with them we lock the cats and dog out of that room for safety. It's not difficult if u love that animal. We have taken time during this pandemic to build them a proper setups and learn more about care. We upgraded all of our pets actually, because we treat them as part of our family. If u don't want to take on the expense, don't buy or adopt it :) Both of my cats and my dog are rescues who are pampered :)

My hamster Cookie that looks like Dumbo is tame. When he wants to free roam, I just cup my hand and he climbs it. When he wants to go back to the cage, he goes to the area of where his cage is and he steps on my feet. 2 of his sons inherited that trait. They are indeed very fast so if you let them free roam make sure to watch your step so you won't step on them.

I bought a hamster on an impulse and I did not know that the Kaytee cages were bad. So I stressed for two weeks getting my hamster a better cage. I finally have her in a decent bin cage but I am upgrading to a 200qt and she has a huge wheel that barely fits in the bin. And guess what I am buying her Higgins food it has been out of stock at chewy forever and finally it’s there. And I’m so happy and excited to switch her from tropical carnival and oxbow to just sunburst and Mazuri that Victoria uses.

some of these videos really make me want to start like a chain pet store brand. it would probably focus a lot of small animals.
It would sell affordable but big cages. It would sell food that meets the animals needs. The animals would come from ethical breeders. Our hamster starter kits would include the smallest cage, which would still be well over the minimum size, food, bedding (obviously not pine or cedar or anything like that), chew toys, a water bottle, two food bowls, a wheel, two houses, a bendy bridge, and probably a sand bath with sand. Plus a care guide with all the information people would need to know.
Then how would the hamsters be kept? They would be in big cages with at least 6 inches of bedding. 12 inch wheels. High quality food. etc.
The only reason I wouldn't do that is because it wouldn't make enough money to pay for correct care. Having only bigger cages available, even for the same price, would mean that people wouldn't buy them on impulse. They would see that the cage takes up lots of room and see that the amount of work needed is more than they want.
    Too bad :(

Rabbits- in order to get nutrients from hay will ferment some inside of them and then eat that when it comes out of their bum.
Also my dad got a guinea pig and pulled out the Petsmart care sheet and that is his new Bible. I did get his to switch to aspen bedding instead of pine but now the guinea pig is larger and is going to need more room. It also does not have any toys.

All the pet stores in my area (And neighboring towns) are still selling small animals, including PetCo, which is strange. PetCo still sells Kaytee Crittertrail cages so they aren’t that much better. At least they don’t make their own small cages.

Hi Munchie, I wanted to tell you a story and also want to learn about mouse care since I’m only educated on hamster atm, on Craigslist I found a little mouse named Oreo, he was cute and all that when I received him (it was for free) I got with a pine bedding which I know is not appropriate for any small animals and with a tiny tales cage just like the cage in this video, the hidehouse was plastic but the mouse chewed most of them, I went to petsmart that very day to get chew toys and a new house to maybe get better environment then before, I also heard them say remove the wheel at night because it can be noisy and all that but I wasn’t educated and my mom made the decision to give to someone more responsible since I was 15 back then, we got a nice lady, she took the pine bedding but told me she is not using them when she arrived home, the lady had other mouses in her household and was fully educated, so I would like to know was the tiny tales cage appropriate for the mouse? Or were they treating the mouse bad?

    • @MunchiesPlace

Sure seems to be this way. However petco is also guilty of mistreating small mammals just as much as petsmart. But petco isn't forcing its brands down people's throats and allow them to make their own decision. Also petsmart did come out with a new line of reptile starter kits. I'd highly recommend checking out emma lynne sampson and her vids on the matter.
