    Hi Kate,
    We did some research into juggling at the Department of Ergonomics at Loughborough University, UK. I was filmed juggling - occasionally dropping(Ha! Ha!). The video on playback showed that, largely, what made a more skilful juggler was not that they could throw the ball parabolically “plumb” into the receiving hand consistently - hence fewer drops, but that the skilful juggler may still throw erratically from time to time, yet that skilful juggler could adjust the position of the catching hand to rectify any imprecision from the throwing hand. The less skilful juggler could not rectify poor throws by such good adjustments to catch so consistently.
    The takeaway was that skilful jugglers (and by extension, other practitioners) could rectify mistakes better - not that they didn’t make mistakes.
    Just thought I’d share. Brilliant vids - the best!

      This analysis fails in music, where a wrong note is a wrong note.

      Hey thank you so much for sharing this with me, and for doing this research! Always wonderful to have more research on circus arts and flow arts, and your findings are fascinating...I might incorporate them into some of my presentations about poi and health, where I often reference studies on juggling and other related arts :) Awesome work!

    Hi! First timer here, just learning today. I got the first variation first try, and then I could do the variations in each hand, but then when I go to cross them over I hit myself in the back of the head haha what am I doing wrong!

    • @SpinPoi
      @SpinPoi  8 місяців тому +1

      Hey so excited you are giving poi a try! Woooo! I think the problem you're having is likely due to the angle of the poi when you are uncrossing them...if they are hitting you in the head it means they are not flat by your sides, but kind of angled behind your back instead. I would try focusing on keeping them on as straight/flat a plane as possible when they both cross and uncross - this might involved standing next to a wall to get a sense for what is flat, adjusting the position of your arms slightly when they cross (relaxed arms is best, make sure you aren't holding tension in your shoulders or holding your arms too high). You might have to work one hand at a time for a while to really drill the muscle memory. If you're still having trouble after a bit more practice let me know!

      What ever your doing just keep doing it over and over and over and over and over and over again. Eventually the pain in the back of your head will go away and you wont be afraid to hit your self any more.

      Hello! I am an academic doctor - I did my PhD on the effects of poi on physical and cognitive function for healthy older adults, working between the Centre for Brain Research and the Dance Department at the University of Auckland. • @SpinPoi

      Hi Golnaz, I would suggest sock poi from Home of Poi (homeofpoi.com). They are affordable and feel great. You could also make a pair first, that way you can experiment with the weight, length, and material, and find out what feels the best to you: ua-cam.com/video/P_V5mWnShus/v-deo.html Good luck and have fun!

    I’ve been trying to do this with silk poi and they keep getting tangled. Is this my fault or am I attempting the impossible?

    • @SpinPoi
      @SpinPoi  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Hayden! It should be possible! Are you working with flags or do you have poi that have silk tails? Either way I reckon the problem could be the timing, or you might need to exaggerate your arm movements a little bit/make bigger movements to make more room for the fabric.

    • @thethirteenthfloor3869
      @thethirteenthfloor3869 2 роки тому +1

      @@SpinPoi I'm working with poi with silk tails (im pretty sure). I'm also fairly new so maybe I'm just inexperienced. thanks for the advice!

    • @SpinPoi
      @SpinPoi  2 роки тому +1

      @@thethirteenthfloor3869 My very first poi had long tails and I actually think it's an amazing way to learn! You have to be more precise in order to not get tangled up, so it sets you up with really good foundations. I say watch your timing and your planes, and make your 8 movement a little wider if needed. With a bit more practice you should be sweet!

    You mean a three beat weave.?

    • @SpinPoi
      @SpinPoi  Рік тому

      Hi Hedron, the split time version of this move (shown at the end of the video) is also known as a 2 beat weave. The 3 beat weave is a slightly more complex pattern which involves your hands alternating which one is on top and each poi makes 3 rotations to complete the pattern.

    The way she holds the nob is not that good (trying to be polite ahh), cause you actually don’t have any possibility to direct you poi. The idea is to hold the nob inside the hand, and to give to the rope to go out throw the first finger’s loop, and to close it with the thumb . Be sure you can direct 100% of you poi directions, and after it hold your poi the way you decide to
