I used to watch The Joy of Painting on PBS as a kid. My parents would laugh, but I didn't mind. I found Bob Ross to be very comforting, and his painting skills amazed me.
Now here I am, watching him again all these years later, long after Bob himself has passed. I love the whole "Happy Little Trees" meme thing, because to me it's a generation half hiding their childlike love for Bob and his painting behind a joke. But we know. We know we're here to experience that simple joy. The Joy of Painting.

WHOOOAA This painting, is CHOCK FULL of, just, *LIFE!*
In a word: lush. This painting is filled with such lush greenery and a lake that narrows into a small little drop, and the way that the very back of the water narrows back, makes it look *endless.* The fact that the right and left look almost symmetrical *besides the right sides large portion of a brighter green lets you look into the painting through the MIDDLE (the dividing point) a lot better. The two trees on the left and right also help you to imagine the distance from their to the more yellow/orange life in the painting. The end of the river, after the drop, with all the splashing water (i guess that's where the "splashes" comes from in the title) gives it so much movement and it creates a flourishing painting filled with life.

how many times has bob ross dropped in a sky, then a mountain, foothills, trees, reflections, then a BIG ol tree up front? this one kept me guessing! i love when he gets more technical.
Fun fact About Bob: Bob didn't cut his hair because he was saving money, but then he didn't want to cut it because it looked good for his show and for the marketing stuff!

I want to know how he is called the paint you use.
It's episodes like this one that make me wonder why people wanted his son to take over after he passed. His son's paintings were all exactly the same and in the same order: sky, water, mountain, 4 trees, done. And his evergreens were TERRIBLE. The branches looked like mustaches. Which was fine for touring and teaching new people how to paint, but for the show it wouldn't have worked long-term. Bob had the classically trained artist in him still, and that allowed him to do far more nuanced paintings. From different canvas preparations, using acrylics and gessos and oils all together; to sometimes creating more abstract landscapes like this, or even the nighttime and swampy looking ones. And Bob created far more depth with his layers. There will never be another Bob Ross; and while a lot of artists criticize him, they are jealous that he was able to commercialize it. When you are a master at the fundamentals, you can bend the rules and find shortcuts.
