In theory the tyranids are a moving ecosystem, adapting at a ludicrous speed and becoming a nightmare you need to deal with before they hit critical mass and steamroll the world. They should have the greatest unit variety of their own, due to rapid genetic engineering and rapid iteration. Unfortunately, making justice to the nightmare they are supposed to be would involve killing or crippling named characters, or at least sending them on the run. It would require a poignant victory that creates a feeling akin to being trapped in a building with a xenomorph hunting you. Its unfortunately a lost opportunity.

I'm hoping 10th edition gives some major lore buffs for the bugs. Back in the earlier editions the losses were still major but a lot less frequent, and it felt like the Tyranids were a looming threat on a scale that made chaos almost insignificant. But since then more factions have popped up, the Great Rift buffed chaos, and nids feel like they've been left behind. It would be interesting to see them develop trump cards on a similar level to Kronos to face unconventional enemies like the Necrons, and take out some big named named worlds in the lore. Not to mention just make them feel like a serious galactic threat entirely again

Marneus Calgar thinking he’s got it all then comes in this beast that has fought on more battlefields against countless different armies and tactics, not only beating him in tactics but also combat, only to be saved at the cost of his loyal bodyguards.
Now it’s Swarmlord shows up, roars, gives the tyranids a second wind. Then Calgar shows up and wrecks Swarmlord, Tyranids lose.

They are a more animalistic xeno species. The hive mind would be fascinating to know more about. But, the lack of understanding of the hive mind and tyranids is also what makes them interesting and horrifying. If to much got explained I feel they would lose much of what makes them work. But, I do wish we could get something. The Death Leaper as all lictors is supposed to be hyper intelligent. Maybe some way of showing the nid pov without losing their mystery. The imperium doesn't care about biomass so it throws guard at stuff and calls it a day. It's only a loss for the imperium if a chapter gets fucked up or a lot of tech is destroyed. The nyds are the other way round though, caring only about biomass. If they eat a dozen worlds that just have average people on them that's a massive W in their books but the imperium might not notice that for at least a century. I imagine the nyds only really care to fuck up imperial worlds w/ named characters on them when those worlds are protecting worlds the nyds actually want.

If you think about it, even if the Tyranids lost every single engagement they participated in, they'd still be an unimaginable threat. They essentially have limitless reserves, but every other faction is working with a finite point of resources. If the opponent you're fighting keeps losing, but never stops coming, you're eventually going to run out of ammunition, supplies, and troops, and the troops that you do have will be too exhausted to keep fighting. On top of that, all of the other factions are essentially in a race with each other or some other factor. The Tau need more time to secure their holdings, the Drukhari need more torture slaves to hold off Slaanesh, the imperium just needs more time for everything. All the Tyranids have is inevitability. The bulk of their forces have yet to arrive, and when they do, everywhere in the galaxy becomes a front against them.

  • @Rhysavus
    @Rhysavus Рік тому +5

The Tyranids as a faction are in a functional trap story-wise. They're written and maintained to be the galaxy-consuming and infinite threat they deserve to be, but are often pushed back or ignored in the major setting while the "core" factions see their stories advanced. This only ends with the Tyranids destroying everything (not fun for anyone), or with the galaxy pulling out some major plot armor to defeat the Hive Mind when it's been hyped to be both infinite and inaccessible (Probably with the Necrons using something akin to their World Engine).
Otherwise, the Tyranids will be limited to specific settings (such as being the core antagonist in Space Marine II) and likely end up with a few decisive victories that "cripple" parts of other major factions before having their story pacified to a victory parade across non-important planets to prevent infringement into more interesting interactions between other factions.
We might be lucky to see something major akin to Macragge being destroyed by the Tyranid invasion in a mutually pyrrhic victory that cripples a major portion of the Hive Fleet, but I doubt we will see Lion face off against them considering he was incapacitated by a psychic attack in the first place (especially when the trailer showcases a Zoanthrope crushing a Librarian so easily).

Meanwhile, The Silent King had already been outside the galaxy and found only tyranids, a lot of tyranids, and then made his way back to the galaxy to wake up and unify the Necrons because shit was about to hit the galactic fan.

I’m very interested in getting into the hobby, and quite frankly the concept alone of the tyranids is really badass to me, but their models just look goofy for the most part. I feel like they could also receive some sort of narrative update. Even with the hive mind SEEMING bland and incapable of nuance writing wise, I think there is a way to give the hive mind some sort of relatable personality, or at least something interesting about it. Maybe a mother type of personality, that cares deeply for the survival of it’s children, or something of that sort. Also even though a hive mind is typically thought of as a sort of singular consciousness, with no room for deviation in an individual’s thought process, I feel like there are a lot of interpretations of a hive mind that could be explored. Do they truly ALL think EXACTLY the same in the hive mind? Even if we just get a sort of pheromone interpretation of individual tyranids interacting with each other, like ants do in real life, I think that would be cool! Maybe they could be like bees, where they dance to communicate, or something to that effect. Even bees can be charming and interesting despite their supposed lack of intelligence. I think them all being one giant connected psychic consciousness could still be explored in a number of neat ways, even if I personally couldn’t give any examples of that. Basically I can feel the potential for the tyranids, and I want to see them fully realized as a faction!

The nids have so much matter on their side, it's only a matter of time til they become physical gods and surpass warp based gods in 40k. Imagine a single hivemind using all of the resources in warhammer 40k. The universe itself becomes one as the entirety of the 40k universe is just a single tyranid superorganism. From a creative perspective, the Nids ofer a blank canvas to painting schemes.

What would be cool is if a new hive fleet appears and B lines straight for Terra. It would also make the perfect opportunity for another primarch to come back

You can lose every battle, but still lose a war.
The 'nids are terrifying simply because any loss they take is inconsequential, and there are hints in the lore that what we're currently seeing is essentially a scouting party. Which when you re-contextualize it around that fact, they seem quite terrifying, given the fact that even Macragge (the home world of the largest space marine chapter) struggled to fend off this scouting party. and also the fact that they seemed to have surrounded the milky way, we have no idea if we're the last ones in their path. Hell the whole universe could've been consumed at this point

Pretty sure it's Iyanden not Lyanden. Incidentally there was a GW board game called Doom of the Eldar, based on that battle. I was the only one who won using both factions.

You know, I was half-expecting that the new dante model would be found wanting, so color me surprised to see Majorkill impressed so. In fact, new model helps me too (for side project, new power armor mark's power unit will be compact enough that you can slot the jump pack above and actual backpack to store everything else you need below without adding too much bulk).

The curse of having no unique named characters; our strongest unit in the lore who is meant to be the apex predator and the ultimate lifeform of the galaxy is reduced to a cool kill stat for an ever growing list of normal ass space Marines.

Pacman didn't care about the blips he ate. The swarm probably thinks the same as each solar system they snack on. Nom Nom Nom = Waka Waka Waka

I’m a firm believer that they win all the unimportant battles like destroying a completely unimportant world guarded by just guardsmen. As soon as a slightly important character gets involved they loose a lot

I'm inclined to believe the tyranids haven't even truly started fighting yet, all the galaxy has seen is the outer tendrils of the first wave
