I'm also a Filipina cyclist, been biking for three years now and I couldn't possibly have that kind of skin anymore, pero no worries and regrets, iba kasi talaga ang fulfillment sa pagbibike, lalo na kapag may nakakasamang group. :) girl power!

(Probinsyana Biker here) I'm really grateful that I live in a mountainous province with lots of jungle trails and UNLI UPHILL roads haha! I couldn't imagine going on a bike ride in the city, MNL roads are freaking insane!!! I wouldn't even last a day there hahaha!

Last ride I did with a fixie bike was thirty years ago, I had an accident.I returned recently, with my son's mountain bike I believe there are lot"s of advantages like the health, but there's a lot to be done regarding the safety issue.

I cycle a few months every year in PH but out in Aklan Central Visayas, I am a road cyclist and have extended family there so it makes for a great early season location to get some training miles logged when Europe is still covered in snow and rain. The cycling culture in PH is still very new for the average person and Manila would need a lot of regeneration to make it viable to people that are not into the cycling culture currently, I personally would have zero issues cycling in Manila but then that is coming after 10's of thousands of miles of cycling all over the world, would I be happy with my wife cycling there who is new to cycling?, No.. London use to be terrible for cycling and they started putting in bikes lanes around the main centre of the city and slowly they branched further and further out to what you have today which is one of the best cycle networks anywhere in the world.. I suggest people start to lobby local Government points of contact and ask what they can do to increase cycling and do it in the guise of increased health and a reduction in Pollution.

Cycling is not for everyone. You have to bear with the heat, pollution, exhaustion, flat tires, potholes, crashes reckless drivers and still enjoy it. It is not just about getting to look cute in your cycling outfit or so you can show off your expensive components or just so you can have/keep your identity as a cyclist. More importantly, it comes with being responsible on road use. That means always riding in single file, signalling when turning, not riding against traffic, walking your bike on sidewalks, riding in a straight line (or predictably) and generally not being an A-hole like riding in the middle or on the wrong side of the road near the island, not blocking pedestrian lanes and stopping when the light is red. When a car hits a cyclist, he pays the cyclist. When a cyclist hits a car, will he pay for the damage or just say sorry? or be even the one who gets furious because you got a scratch on his beloved bike? And this fact makes cyclists reckless because what ever happens to them, it is always someone else's fault. This is why it makes sense to license them too so they can be apprehended for traffic violations, and will have insurance as well because not everyone knows how to really ride. If you are afraid to get hit or crash, then you should just do your riding inside your subdivision. Don't demand or expect anything to change so life would be easier or safer just because so many people are into it. Cycling is not for everyone.

It might be you who doesn't know anything about bicycles. She's riding a "fixie" or a fixed gear commuter bicycle. A fixie does not have a freewheel hub, the cyclist doesn't coast but simply controls his cadence--or the number of strokes per minute depending on the speed he wants to achieve. A fixie is always in "powered mode" which means all the cyclist has to to do to stop is to STOP PEDALING. Before you think this is too simple you should try it. "Fixie" cycling is an exotic specialization----the rest of us cogset users (those that can choose gears both in the back wheel and in the chainring) have a lot of respect for fixie cyclists. the only people that do not respect fixie cyclists are ignorant morons like you.
