I Know what I Know....
I always thought she sounded like Ronstadt, never knew it was her for real.
There's a story behind it. L. Ronstadt was criticized a lot at that time because she broke boycott of South Africa by performing there. However, other musicians broke it too -- for example, Queen, a tiny detail somehow left out in that movie about Freddie Mercury. So P. Simon included her on an album which featured many black South African musicians.
this song somehow came into my mind the morning before the birth of my daughter on the 21st. I was terrified and this song calmed me down immediately, now I sing it to calm her down at night.

Had this back in the 80s. Became part of who I am. Love Linda Ronstadt and Ladysmith Black Mambazo as well. This song reminds me of a more recent song "Gambia" by Sona Jobarteh

And the second verse is a first-person narrative on Linda Ronstadt's "early memory," as *she* is the one whose origin was Tucson.

Great song. One of the professors at a university I worked at used it to teach music form.
This song in particular, and the whole album had a beautifully crafted African influence, Ladysmith Black Mambazo on diamonds on the soles of her shoes and so on, this rendition with Linda Ronstadt is epic and as the original still reigns supreme but there are a few other renditions with slightly altered lyrics that are right up there, the live version with the late great Miriam Makeba in Harare Zimbabwe circa 1987 is definitely right up there, one of my favorite songs of all time
I moved to South Africa two weeks after Nelson Mandela was released from prison, I won't pretend that this album had no influence in that decision.

As a white boy growing up in the middle of Iowa this album and in particular this song had a tremendous healing and restoricle significance in my life from puberty into the now quickly advancing later stages in my journey. I have met and fallen in love with a woman from Uganda and we plan on marrying... legal part here but the true ceremony will take place there...under the African sky and our union will be blessed by the he stars of the Southern hemisphere.

Years ago my late mother owned a CD copy of this great album, I wanna own a vinyl record just to experience how the 80s felt like because I was born at the prime of the 90s.
I'm sure you can find a copy somewhere from us relics(70 years old!!). Ha!!
This came to mind when I was on safari in Kenya and Tanzania. It will stay with me this year when I go to Zambia.
When I heard this as a child I thought the chorus was "Gah nnn-gah, nnn-gah, nnn-gah, whoa-o-oh" 😂
