I remember hearing Graceland at the age of 14. My mom would play that album all of the time. As a african american at that age I was so taken by his respectful incorporation of african tongues into his songs. My mom would play music by Ladysmith Black Mambazo so when I heard them on this album I developed such a profound respect for Paul Simon, as an Artist and his ability to tell a story within the song. Graceland by Paul Simon is probably among the best and most significant albums in my lifetime so far. Paul Simon is a world treasure. After 30 years, this album still gets me going. Easily. I am so privileged to have seen the Graceland tour twice - once, in the fourth row at Radio City Music Hall, with Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela. One of my all time favorite records.

Even though my childhood was terrible, marked by violence, hatred and humiliation, I also associate it with good things, like Paul Simon's music. My mother listened to the album Graceland up and down every day. I remember Paul's voice giving me goosebumps then and now, but also enveloping me with love and energy. One of the best albums of all time.
Paul Simon puts a touch of detail on his songs. So deep,. So spiritual. Some people learn music, Paul Simon is born with Music. He does it as easy as an eagle soars and lion roars.
I should never stop to be grateful to my dear friend, whom I asked one day: "Hey man, I'm looking for a great album, what do you suggest?" and he replied: "Well of course, Graceland by Paul Simon: I felt in love with it!" - God knows he was right.
❤ this song! I grew up in New Zealand in the 1980s, my dad played the Graceland album all the time (and still has it on Compact Disc.) I remember hearing about the Springbok tour protests in Auckland which was a huge protest against apartheid and it closed a football stadium and caused riots on the streets in New Zealand. I spoke to a colleague who is the same age as me who grew up in South Africa and he heard absolutely nothing about these or any other anti-apartheid protests overseas until 1994 when apartheid fell. Incredible times and this music brings me great memories of growing up in that era.
My heart is broken watching this now. Tata Shabalala was instrumental in me loving our very diverse South African music. This was my jam. Tatu Shabalala and Jonny Clegg brought Zulu music to us
thanks friend, I am a WASP, I loathe that word- I am just me, from Canada and I always loved American blues and Bob Marley but then I began searching through people like Simon, and Cooder and Taj Mahal and I fell in love with REAL African music, what you never hear on the radio- you are blessed to come from such a rich culture, Canada has become the country it is because of our immigrants, bless all of you. I will check out the artists you mentioned. I love Ali Farke Toure- I can't remember what part of Africa he is from- do you agree when we listen to music we don't take up arms against each other, we just flow-? Namaste, Z

The bass guitar playing is out of this world!! RIP, guitarist Ray Phiri, such a unique player. This is the greatest bassline of all time. The bass literally makes this song what it is.
To my friend Victor whom I haven't seen in almost 2 decades . . . THANK YOU for introducting me to this album back in the '80s, as well as Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
4:48 There is something deeply nostalgic and tearful about the gentle humming or 'hooing' voices towards the end. It's one of the trademarks of this song.
Growing up in African we listened to ladysmith black mambazo and other great south african artists long before Paul Simon. But i want to thank Paul Simon for taking that music to the rest of the world.
Paul Simon is one of the great songwriters of all times. I think he can be compared to Bob Dylan who was a hero of the generation before me. Being born in 1972 the Graceland album had a big impact on me as a young man. I was fortunate enough to see him with Garfunkel in 2004 (with my stepdad, an experience I will cherish the rest of my life) and during the rhythm of the saints tour. Listening to the music of Paul Simon makes me feel like the teenager that I was in the 80's (even though it's been while.......)
Dylan and his folk music opened doors for a lot of artists who didn't fit into the regular slots that the public insisted on. Both have had extremely great success in staying relevant through the decades. I was a teenager in the 70's, so I was at the perfect age to catch both great men at the apexes (is that a word?) of their careers.
My 4 year old daughter got to shake Paul Simon’s hand a couple of years ago at Ace Hardware and I’m still bragging to everyone who will listen about her good fortune. An American treasure.

I’m just so happy to be here. And happy to be able to come back and remember my childhood, road-trips with my family. These songs in the background, man this life is something else.
My mom gave me this album a few days ago to listen to. Feels like I found god kinda, and I’m not even remotely religious. Listened to it always as a kid but didn’t remember most of the songs. Such a beautiful album it makes me sob

Paul Simon brought the lovely African pop sound to America's attention, with so many beautiful voices. As others have commented, it turned many of us on to Miriam Makeba, Huge Makesela, & Tuku (and more). My students hear their voices, too.
Thank you, Paul Simon, for sharing the beauty of African culture on this album. Zulu is such a beautiful language that is rarely heard/listened to by English speakers, especially in the US.

+Camden1313 My baby brother learned to read from the covers and liner notes of my Paul Simon albums.
The bass guitar playing is out of this world!!

Thabo Sethipa what was ray phiri's role?
The whole story of Paul in Africa putting the album together and coming out with this great song...just fantastic.
Paul Simon is a Folk Song legend. Sometimes I wake up & 1 of his songs is playing in my head. That’s the start of a beautiful day.
I'm so sorry. You are a joy and a survivor.
I feel the beautiful spirit of the South African people through Paul's songs here.
Brilliant superb song
It has the original highlife rhythm. Love from the motherland 🇬🇭🇬🇭
Rest in peace and in power, Joseph Shabalala, your work on this album and on others has transcended time and space and is universal.
One of the greatest records of the 80's and probably one of the finest of all time 👏 👌
Paul Simon puts a touch of detail on his songs. So deep,. So spiritual. Some people learn music, Paul Simon is born with Music. He does it as easy as an eagle soars and lion roars.
Cat Dad here got to see Paul and dancers perform this live. A great memory, thank you Paul. SHARED to our Playlist. ♥#tessaslegacy
How am I only finding out this video exists now?! I've tears in my eyes seeing this for the first time. I grew up listening to this album. I'm 39 :O
Me, I'm 53. This was the first album I bought after getting freed from national service. it was the soundtrack to my new freedom.
I should never stop to be grateful to my dear friend, whom I asked one day: "Hey man, I'm looking for a great album, what do you suggest?" and he replied: "Well of course, Graceland by Paul Simon: I felt in love with it!" - God knows he was right.
Definitely a good and dear friend, good on you both brother.
What a wordsmith. His work is just wonderful. Such beautiful imagery and human insight. Thank you Paul.
❤ this song! I grew up in New Zealand in the 1980s, my dad played the Graceland album all the time (and still has it on Compact Disc.)
I remember hearing about the Springbok tour protests in Auckland which was a huge protest against apartheid and it closed a football stadium and caused riots on the streets in New Zealand.

Tatu Shabalala and Jonny Clegg brought Zulu music to us
i feel you man. We stand strong
thanks friend, I am a WASP, I loathe that word- I am just me, from Canada and I always loved American blues and Bob Marley but then I began searching through people like Simon, and Cooder and Taj Mahal and I fell in love with REAL African music, what you never hear on the radio- you are blessed to come from such a rich culture, Canada has become the country it is because of our immigrants, bless all of you. I will check out the artists you mentioned. I love Ali Farke Toure- I can't remember what part of Africa he is from- do you agree when we listen to music we don't take up arms against each other, we just flow-? Namaste, Z
@@MSYNGWIE12 Ali Farkas Touré is from West Africa , Mali to be precise.

Amazing leg work
FIRST CD I ever bought too. I'll never forget it. Have it framed
She had diamonds on the soles of her shoes and Paul is a diamond the music world should never lose!
I listened to this album in 1986 (thanks to dad) and fell in love with Paul Simon at 13 years old with no right to do so as the greatest American songwriter in the post war era. now at 50 years old, I’m like, ya……
There have been so many classic albums in my lifetime: Rumours. The Dark Side of the Moon. Graceland is up there with the very best of them.
I didn't understand how special this man's music was as a kid, but even back then I knew it was good music!
One of my favorite albums and also the absolute genius Paul Simon.
Hello I really do appreciate you for being a big fan thank you for your wonderful comments on my post it really means a lot to me.I sincerely hope you never stop listening to my music…..❤️❤️❤️
Paul, I know this song because I met a man from Jordan, Amman. He is a huge fan of you. In Jordan live very nice people, but they are very heavy. Their energy is very low, lower than the earth can carry.
Owa owa
This was one of my mother's favorite songs. Such a happy song. RIP, mom. You had good taste in music.
Thanks for the great love and support you show me as a special fan of mine, I hope you won't stop listening to music, and thanks for your sincere
Compliment and love towards my music❤️❤️may god bless you.
Yes. Very sophisticated taste in music your mom had. This music is not appreciated by many.
She must have been smart and kind.
❤❤😊😊
This is therapeutic, never really realized till now Paul has the voice of an angel
This album still haunts me.
I first heard it as a child and it still inspires me.❤❤❤❤
It's 2023 Christmas and am 49 years old . This piece reminds me of my dad and uncles. It was on Thier playlists when ever they were together. Miss them uncles Rhodes and dad may your souls rest in peace.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Paul Simon is a Genius. My first time hearing Cecilia, I was four and my babysitter brought the record and we danced. My true love of MUSIC began. 50 yrs later, and I still love everything this man has shared. Thanks( for the memories) Paul. ❤
Hello I really do appreciate you for being a big fan thank you for your wonderful comments on my post it really means a lot to me.I sincerely hope you never stop listening to my music…..❤️❤️❤️
I don't know why this album isn't up there with the greats.. and some of the best bass guitar you will ever have the privilege to here. True musicianship and songwriting.
It IS up there with the greats. I'm pretty sure it's in most "top 100 pop/rock albums of all time" lists
I don't know either - Graceland is a great album.
All of His children coming home.
I hesitate to write these words, you shall likely never read them.
Thank you, Paul Simon, for the music of my entire youth and a return to HaShem in my old years.
May many many blessings be yours always
Shalom
In my opinion the most genius musician of all time. Everything from the blending of african rhythm to the lyrics to the textures/sounds to the progression and repetitions is perfect. Oh also, the dancing in the video is a huge plus.

The absolute genius is Bob Dylan.
This album, this song, are medicine to the soul. The soul of a person, the soul of a country, for real, the world soul. What beautiful inspiration.
Many thanks to mr. Simon and everyone involved in making this music.
I'll never get tired of this album💯
@Paul Simon ♪ holy shit you responded...you are an amazing example of humility with such an understanding of the music that speaks to so many souls. Thank you for your music Mr. Simon.
💖
The bass guitar playing is out of this world!!
RIP, guitarist Ray Phiri, such a unique player.
This is the greatest bassline of all time. The bass literally makes this song what it is.
One of Simon's best, one of the best of all times.
I LOVE that buzzing sound of those voices when they harmonize low notes.
You know what he's singing about. Hidden diamond ❤❤❤❤
This era of Paul Simon might be the best music ever. Its calming, but makes you move.
La analogía entre estas letras y las riquezas de Sur Africa y la pobreza de su población negra no debe extrañar a nadie.
Thank you Ladysmith black Mambaza for putting South Africa on the music map
❤❤😊😊
RIP, guitarist Ray Phiri, such a unique player.
2:50 - I LOVE how Paul is just in the moment, vibing to his lyrics and the rhythm - this song is beautiful
To my friend Victor whom I haven't seen in almost 2 decades . . . THANK YOU for introducting me to this album back in the '80s, as well as Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
I love this song, and it's great to see it performed with these talented South African musicians. `
4:48 There is something deeply nostalgic and tearful about the gentle humming or 'hooing' voices towards the end. It's one of the trademarks of this song.
THE album both my father and I liked when driving... will never forget it, will never bore me..
Much better singer then Dylan.
My 4 year old daughter got to shake Paul
Simon’s hand a couple of years ago at Ace Hardware and I’m still bragging to everyone who will listen about her good fortune. An American treasure.
This album is timeless. It will never get old. A masterpiece. The best album of the 80s and for sure in the top ten albums of all time.
Hello I really do appreciate you for being a big fan thank you for your wonderful comments on my post it really means a lot to me.I sincerely hope you never stop listening to my music…..❤️❤️❤️
I'm so happy to find this song again. A great album. Joyful and political! Imagine!
Such a sweet voice, and such gorgeous lyrics! Thank you!!

Absolutely beautiful. Well done Ladysmith, your vocal backing to Paul is as a sacrament !
Overall one of the best tracks to a very awesome album.
Paul Simon, well done for pulling the best SA has to offer on Graceland.
Lion, Yirrrr!!!!
Amen,
JaneR
I bought the CD a week after it came out and still play it regularly. I love it. I remember going to the Graceland concert in Los Angeles and dancing to Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes it was an amazing experience.
Love this song
Amazing singer
And amazing choir
Never gets old
Been listening to it for years
I’m South African and my boyfriend is American 🇺🇸 he introduced me to this song and we love it so much. It’s so good to know that SA and USA came together to make this masterpiece

South Africans voice harmonies are smooth and amazing...choral voices
30 years young and still as brilliant as it was when they first cut the track!!! FABULOUS!!!
AA MacKenzie signs of a great talents contribution to the music world
AA MacKenzie yes they all are loved ❤️🦒
The world will never forget Paul Simon..True Legend!
What a beautiful song... this song gives me the most desirable feelings... it is a medicine for my soul, which I have been prescribing to myself since I heard it. the music, the rhythm, the melody, the story, and that rebellious bassline. Wow!
Thanks for the great love and support you show me as a special fan of mine, I hope you won't stop listening to music, and thanks for your sincere
Compliment and love towards my music❤️❤️may god bless you.
❤❤😊😊
My parents would play Paul Simon when I was little to help me fall asleep. These songs are sooo nostalgic for me. And very relaxing
I grew up listening to Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Tracy Chapman,. Beethoven, Rachmaninoff & Paul Simon. Paul cradles my soul's happiness and joyful spirit, especially with Graceland. I think I would go out of my mind too, if I heard him in concert live with Graceland. Wow! That would be grand!
Thanks for the great love and support you show me as a special fan of mine, I hope you won't stop listening to music, and thanks for your sincere
Compliment and love towards my music❤️❤️may god bless you.
❤❤😊😊
Fall of '89, my second year of med school, and my roommate had 'Graceland' on a cassette. I used to play it at full blast while cleaning the apartment. Good times.
Whoever directed this video is incredibly talented. What did I just see? It's a visual orgasm of song and dance and feeling good.
ROCK ON!
One of the greatest albums ever!
I was 22, in the army, overseas and this was definitely in rotation on the boom box.
I just saw an injustice...... Paul Simon just calmed.. It don't take it away..... Music 🎵🎵🎵🎵. It's got to rule.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The part of this song at 3:41 drives me insane. I once listened to this song over and over for 3 days.
I hear you.
I grew up listening to this record album because my father played it 24/7. I know every beat to every track! Probably the best all around album of all time! I’ve even seen Ladysmith in concert. Thank you Paul Simon for giving me something to hold onto from when my father was alive!
Paul Simon brought the lovely African pop sound to America's attention, with so many beautiful voices.
As others have commented, it turned many of us on to Miriam Makeba, Huge Makesela, & Tuku (and more).
My students hear their voices, too.
Paul. The voices on . Hold on 😮😮😮❤❤❤❤❤. Everyone says I'm crazy... ✔️✔️✔️🎵🎶👠
Amazing ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
