  • FRONTLINE investigated complaints of abuse and harsh treatment as detentions and deportations of undocumented immigrants reached record levels during former President Barack Obama’s first term. (Aired Oct. 18, 2011)
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: www.pbs.org/donate.
By the time this documentary premiered, more than one million immigrants had been deported under the Obama administration and critics charged that families were unfairly separated after being caught in a nationwide dragnet. Correspondent Maria Hinojosa investigated President Obama’s enforcement strategies and journeyed into the secretive world of immigrant detention, with a penetrating look at who was being detained and what was happening to them.

@@kimisrael66 ok , I understand your point but I’m just saying, is it or isn’t it illegal to come into the country with no green card or whatever it is that people need to come into the USA? I get frustrated because I was born here and you have no idea how hard it is for me in my own country, there’s more of them than there is of anything else and they look out only for each other, if I go apply for a job and it’s between me and a someone that’s here illegal guess who gets the job? I’m 58 years old and one of them told me a very long time ago “ watch we’re gonna take over this country “ I honestly laughed in his face and said yeah right! Well, what do you know , he was absolutely right. Whatever happened to the white college students that used to work in fast food restaurants to pay their way through college? They took all the jobs, I use to walk around cutting lawns when I was a kid, and then I used to be a paper boy on my bike, man , I get mad just thinking about it. I remember all the city workers used to be white, in fact I remember when Santa Ana used to be all white. I think it’s wrong for them to come here and get pregnant really quick and then they get food stamps, medical and other benefits that were supposed to be for U.S citizens . I swore to myself that I would never go to Mexico, well guess what? Mexico came to me!

OMG, they say that illegal immigrants have never broken a law. Driving without a valid license is breaking the law, not having car insurance is breaking the law being in the country illegally is breaking the law. And the only reason they feel threatened is because they know they are breaking the law, so enough with all the excuses....

I suggest, that Frontline do a piece of illegal immigrants in Europe. Their immigration laws are tougher, than the ones of the USA. For example, in most European countries, illegal immigrants are not allowed to work-- employers are highly sanctioned by the government, if they're caught hiring illegal immigrants. Furthermore, when illegal immigrants are detained by the immigration officials--they start the deportation procedures immediately, and people are sent back to their countries right away.

It was going on in the colonies between the master and the servant and many people were born as a result of what you describe. What I’ve learned makes me understand this country is not perfect and the people who are in control use their power to dehumanize people that come here illegally but they also use it to dehumanize people that they see is unstable or unfit and so We have many many thousands of very traumatized people both men women and children. What this one-sided narrator fails to mention is a crime to illegally enter the US.
"In the U.S., illegal entry is criminalized under 8 US Code Section 1325, “improper entry by alien,” which calls for a fine or imprisonment of up to six months, or both. Doing it a second time (which is then a FELONY) can earn a two-year sentence."
If you illegally enter Mexico: "The penalty for illegally crossing the border [into Mexico] is a fine of up to 5,000 pesos and imprisonment of up to 2 years. If the offense is committed while transporting drugs or other contraband, the maximum penalty is doubled. Illegal entry into the country is a federal crime that frequently results in civil penalties."
I have lived in 3 Latin American Countries one for several years with my 3 children. I ALWAYS fulfilled each Country's Immigration Laws and paid the proper fees (Visa applications) and occasionally the demanded "mordidas" to hasten the processing time. There is nothing preventing any of the complaining Illegal Aliens from returning to their home countries just by asking and they are on the next flight out. Unless they have pending Felony Charges that requires adjudication, they are free to be repatriated by a simple request.
There is nothing to prevent the husbands, wives, and children from joining their Loved Ones back in their home Countries. As legal dependents they are immediately granted the proper visas etc. as minor children of a foreign citizen who has been repatriated. (the Canadian woman complaining that she has not seen her children is questionable. They are all allowed to enter Canada even if they are U.S. Citizens. This is a non-issue There has to be more to that story).

It nailed it. You had illegals over there throwing stuff at them and threaten them and call him names and the government backed up. This is an about to send them home. Send them all home illegal. EVERYTHING STOPS, take a good fucking look around, what needs to be changed so this kid has a healthy upbringing? If you aren't able to do something like that, do not have kids. Most countries strongly enforce their immigration laws. If you get stopped by law enforcement and can't produce a valid Visa you go to jail and get deported. Hello, that's not complicated! Hospitals in the US can be held liable for negligence for refusing to aid someone in need of health checks. So it’s not a matter of they don’t check, they legally can not turn them away regardless or citizen status. They do eventually check for some form of identification but will not out the patient unless an investigation is involved. As for schools I’m my home state of the US they don’t turn children away because of citizenship status of the parents. At least not the public schools. So most parents opt that route.
