    These seem to be pretty darned easy to grow. I put some out only last fall & I already have them popping up all over the place- & that's in the woods. Not even out in the open, like I see on most of these channels. That, geraniums, wild mermaid, stickywilly, trout Lily & some mixed grasses is pretty much everything I've been seeing out there, so far.

      Hi Chris! Thank you for stopping in!!! I wish I had that problem, they don't seem to spread nearly as much in my yard as I thought they would. Some counties, even close to me consider them invasive even though they are native. I get a lot of wild garlic popping up everywhere, any chance that's what you have as opposed to nodding onion? I had to look up wild mermaid and stickywilly! I've never heard of those! ;)

      @@ninetypercentnative We don't have an actual Native garlic. We have something called Meadow Garlic which is actually another type of onion & that was already in the area when I started. That doesn't come in until summer, though. I also put out Ramps, which is the third Native species & those don't look anything like these. They weren't here, before & the chives look about right & taste like an onion. If they needed to be scarified before, I got the seeds from Prairie Moon Nursery & they pre-scarify all their seeds, if it's needed. I guess they must have done a good job, then.

    Thanks for the vid. Nodding onion & prairie onion are some of my favorite native plants here in Illinois. They're like little fireworks of color popping up wherever they're growing. I'm going to try to get them growing in my garden next year.

    Awesome was really trying to find the info of when to collect the seeds and when to plant. There’s an area near me where these grow but it’s densely populated by creeping bellflower an invasive that everyone nearby has in there yard. So I was gonna start ripping out the bell flowers to eat and start planting natives in their place.

      Hi SJ! That's a great request. I don't have problems with non-native or other native onions so I haven't had to work that out before. Next time I am outside, I'll try and remember to dig one up and put the photo in the community page of my channel. Does that work? ;)

    So happy to have found your channel - I'm a fellow native plant lover and have some nodding onion seedlings that I'm looking to plant soon. Question for you: does the foliage fade and look messy/need to be trimmed like other ornamental onions/allium, or does it stay green and sedge-like all season? Also, I think I'm going to have to plant mine in drier spots (a part shade and possibly a more sunny spot) - I've read that they like more moist conditions - think they'll be okay? Thanks so much for the video and any additional tips you can offer!

    • @TheSuburbanGardenista
      @TheSuburbanGardenista Рік тому +1

      Oh - one more question - how tall does the foliage get? (Just trying to think of the best place in the garden beds for these new little guys!).

    • @ninetypercentnative
      @ninetypercentnative  Рік тому +1

      Thank you for stopping in!!! I just followed you :). I have had nodding onion for years and that isn't sticking out to me as a problem. I do have to stake them sometimes because they get floppy when they start to bloom. They are pretty tolerant of varying conditions. I think they will be fine! Just water until established. If they suffer move them;). To answer your questions below the foliage get about 12-18 in. So glad you commented. Hope to hear from you again. Making friends with other UA-camrs isn't the easiest thing in the world ;) !!!

      @@ninetypercentnative thank you so much for your quick reply! That is very helpful for planning! I wish I had all the various conditions for growing all my native plants so I can have all the "right plants in the right places", but alas, I have mostly shade and mostly dry conditions - but I keep trying to see what sticks! Fingers crossed these will survive as they sound lovely (I've only seen them in pics).

    Thank you so much for this! This is a native plant that we have in common! Where do you keep your seedlings while you're kind of holding them for a year? A cell tray indoors? Maybe a greenhouse? Or sheltered area outside?

      Hi Hayley! Well....that depends on the mood I am in at the time of collecting, SMH! Ideally everything would be stored in the fridge. I like to use old pill and herb bottles to store seeds. However, sometimes they just end up somewhere in my garage. Anything I have purchased and not collected myself stays organized in my photo boxes in the fridge, like this one amzn.to/3JKrVjh

    • @ninetypercentnative
      @ninetypercentnative  Рік тому

      Hi Kelly! Thank you for stopping in! Mine bloom in late June - July. The seed heads also add interest after they bloom. Just an FYI, check bonap or the USDA plant site to make sure it is native in your area. This native is actually listed as noxious in some areas even in VA.

    Native to? Sorry if I missed it. Is she from Ontario? Or are these native to Canada, in general?

    • @ninetypercentnative
      @ninetypercentnative  Рік тому

      Hi John! I am from Northern Virginia. It looks like they are native to some parts of Canada. I always use bonap to check. In google type in the bonap and then the latin name and you should be taken to the genus and then you can choose the map for the species. Not sure if this link will come through but this is for the nodding onion, bonap.net/MapGallery/County/Allium%20cernuum.png
