I remember, as a kid driving by the Landmark with my parents . I always thought it was the coolest building in Vegas! I was sad to see it brought down.

At the 52 second mark of this video, the building shown under construction, is the Las Vegas Hilton, not the stratosphere. What is now the Westgate, and was once the Las Vegas Hilton is located immediately north of the convention center, and on the opposite side of Paradise Road, from where the landmark was located.

Thanks. I enjoyed this. I really wish I had a chance to see more of the older hotels before they were knocked down, but I’m grateful for the ones I was able to see. The Landmark, Sands, and the Dunes are the ones I unfortunately missed and really wish I could have seen.

I was there in 74 and remember the skybar drinks were very expensive but the 360 degree view of the city was amazing.

Anything like a skybar will have skyhigh prices!

When I was a kid about 13 years old in 1969. My parents took me up to the top I think it was a restaurant and bar.. it was beautiful. There was a slight Vegas wind storm outside but on top of the Landmark the wind was far worse and those big tilted panel windows you see were rattling and leaking air very badly, I was wondering if they were going to blow out.

My grandmother supervised the advertising and publicity department at LANDMARK in the 70s. By her accounts, that hotel was practically running on autopilot from the day it opened. At any given time, many who worked there weren't even sure who their boss was, due to the endlessly revolving door of in-charge personnel.
I covertly obtained entrance to the building after it had stood vacant for a decade. It had an internal ecosystem of feral cats, raccoons, and bugs of every variety, and the substructure was filled with waist-deep water that smelled like a slave-ship in July.

i am a loss vegas Native and there wee ZERO raccons in the Las vegas Valley

@@beyondalpha1072 I, too, am a Vegas native, and there certainly are racoons in the valley(they're rare nowadays, but then, I never see lizards or snakes anymore, either). Most wildlife has been driven into the wash over the years, but we do still get random coyotes, mountain lions, and other critters walking the streets once in a while.

Cool video ! I love seeing old videos of classic Vegas, I just stayed at Resorts World and that close to the convention center and circus circus, can’t believe Landmark was so close ! The old Stardust sat on same property wjere RW is now !

I stated there a few times. There were only 8 Rooms Jerrynanderd on each floor like puzzle pieces. Nice small place something lacking these these Days! Great Documentary
Although a Big Fan of Howard Hughes's, he and his accountants changed (ruined?) Vegas forever. When thy made every department to be a "Profit Center" instead of only the Casino. In the past, it was the Only "Profit Center" needed.

      However
It was the bravest, maneuver in Las Vegas history to own
      an unheard of monopoly
A step toward legal legitimate operations
Buying the D. I. out from under Dalitz, was a message
Laxault, wanted a pawn, & he knew where to find him.
And no one was the poorer for it at the time
Our city is officially a mega resort
      for Mr. Hughes
      Mr. Kerkorian & Mr. Wynn.
      It was about thinking ahead.
Too far ahead for anyone to know what they had in mind
Was Howard Hughes mentally unstable ?
In today's society it's just a common prescription drug addiction.
      Las Vegas 2023
      was vision
      He wasn't crazy
Look at what the man accomplished
      o. m. g. 😮

Casinos have always been profit based. They wouldn't have been able to stay in business for long otherwise.
What you might mean is value. In the last 10-20 years, Las Vegas is not as cheap as used to be, but that's because of demand. It no longer has to be cheap or offer value because it doesn't have to. Las Vegas is at a point of critical mass, where it doesn't have to do much to attract people.

I saw "Melinda First Lady of Magic" there. Unfortunately magic shows have fallen out of favor in LV. To be fair, the nearby Riviera was going downhill fast at the same time as well as the Debbie Reynolds Casino (The Paddlewheel).
