This is probably the greatest pedal demo I have ever seen. Straight 10 minutes of playing with text to read on screen. Thanks for making me fall asleep from how relaxing it is.
Saw this and been holding off on my reverb pedal choice (strymon, empress, ventris) and finally made the plunge and picked up the RV 500. I am a synth guy and I love the depth of programming and multiple modulation controllers. Great value as well. Thanks Knobs!
I was going for a BigSky. But dang, that control function and the dual reverb is so powerful, i want this now. It can also emulate the Cloud reverb, which is the 90% reason why i wanted the BigSky
Hoooooly moly release some presets for this on patreon or something! Already have been loving this pedal since I got it, and now I'm excited all over again.
Wow. I've had this pedal for over a year now and I've been wasting it's potential. I've gotten some incredible soundscapes out of this box and am excited to discover all these beautiful ideas layed out before us all.
I recommend the rv over the md, theres no sounds in the rv i wouldnt be happy to use but some of the md stuff sounds a little off to me, i didnt find it as inspiring
Thinking of actually buying one then suddenly Knobs made a video with in-depth details and totally different from the other videos out there. I like how different are the sounds here on Knobs and it helps me get a different perspective of the pedal. I'm definitely getting one. Thanks for the vid! Helpful and awesome!
the main reason this unit shines above almost all others is its 32 bit architecture. its literally another quantum leap in tonal quality compared to 24 bit. i noticed a huge difference right off the bat compared to my TC and other high end rack reverb units. The close you can get to analog the better especially when you're summing analog bypass with your digital output. love this pedal!!! use as the last pedal in your signal effects chain to take advantage of the 32 bit output on your final signal. you don't run this unit before a 24 bit unit or you lose that 32 bit benefit.
@CuntyMcCuntface-vc4do the audience doesn't care or hear it. A whole generation played shows and recorded with 16-bit effects. We thought it was great. The Quadraverb 2 was a big deal because it was 20-bit. Lol.
As a person who loves Boss/Roland but wouldn't consider myself a fanboy, how do you feel about the SY200? Because I've heard a lot of people lose their minds over it (rightfully so).
I feel like you really gotta learn the pedal inside and out to get those sweet tones you want, doesn't just give them to you. That's what i've heard anyways
Idk man I think Boss fits its role perfectly as the workhorse of the pedal industry, and being dependable for a good price. They are just a little plain compared to the 479845 million boutique pedal companies that exist now.
@crinklygenie you won't, but aren't supposed to. The Big Sky and Timeline are in a whole separate tier (both price and quality) from the RV-6 and DD-7. However, this box is on par with the Big Sky, has way more options, and is $150 cheaper. The presets aren't great, but why who is gonna buy this beast to only use presets? Also, many stores have to special order Strymon, even online. That's not a con for the pedals, obviously, but it's annoying nonetheless.
"I never liked Boss pedals" - every hipster poser guitarist who has ever spent 5 minutes on the internet... let me guess, you like wasting money on Apple Computers too?
i really think boss should cook up a subsidiary like digitech did with DOD (RIP). this pedal (and some other boss stuff) looks as fun and experimental as anything else out there but because it has a dark grey paint job, a name that's basically a serial number, and is stamped with the boss logo i think a lot of people assume it's a pretty by-the-numbers offering. or maybe that's just me!
Pavle Banovic Boss IS the subsidiary ( of Roland)... Hahaha... Jr, Jr. ? Why not, I guess, but seems they kind of have already made an appeal to the audiophiles with the Wazacraft line.
_"DOD (RIP)"_ Pavel Banovic Digitech is still making pedals using the DOD moniker. They just released a killer delay pedal. dod.com/en edit: I should say they brought the name back. ;)
Actually, DOD came before DigiTech. What happened is that DigiTech brought back the moniker. However, the company recently experienced a mass layoff. I'd suggest to everyone to snag things like the Rubberneck, Gunslinger, Carcosa, and other awesome pedals before they're all discontinued and skyrocket to insane prices on Reverb.
Buying this and the walrus audio D-1. Also I have the hx stomp and I found this guy that made a reverb preset for it that is one of the most beautiful reverbs I've ever heard. I will post a link gotta find it real quick
I too was going to go for the big sky but watched a shootout video between the two and the boss came across as a warmer more analog sound, plus its dual reverb/delay function and configurability won out for me so I bought one. If you decide to, get the mains adapter at the same time, its worth it in the long run.
Dang....best RV-500 vid I’ve seen. As a synth user, this looks very much ideal for creating soundscapes, looping trails, all kinds of crazy stuff, including very good delay and reverb. Its almost programmable like a synth. Isn’t there a full computer editor for the RV-500? Or is that the DD-500? Either way, the UI seems pretty solid. Was thinking Mooer Ocean Machine, but this looks more interesting TBH.
Can you control parameters with a step sequence via midi? i.e. a different algorithm on each step or a delay time that jumps around to programmed steps?
Hello Knobs, thanks for a fantastic demo! One question: Why do you call the RV-500 a "Pseudo-Looper" (1:17)? I have had the pedal for a week now and I can't find any looping capabilities, although the Hold function is sweet. :-)
Presets or it didn't happen! Also wish this thing had more hold parameters and that dual or a/b patches could be set per-patch instead of global. Not sure why the latter isnt included.
I hoped you solved the mystery of the "trrue stereo" on RV500. i use it in a stereo rig and it does not seem true stereo when using both inputs and outputs other than on the dry signals.... i wished i could at least pan the A and B on simultaneous patches but i don't find any panning in the menus...
I've got the DD500 and I have the same problem. In the end the only true stereo delay (and I suppose reverb too) is the dual. I guess the definition of stereo Boss has is that you can put different types of reverb/delay in each output. Disappointing tbh but I still can't afford a strymon so this will have to do for now
The Boss is definitely more of a programmer’s reverb. If you’re a tweaker, like to have personal special presets, complex unique reverbs, this is definitely the unit for that. I feel like the Strymon sounds amazing, maybe slightly better overall, but it also costs more. A couple of the Boss algorithms sound just okay compared to some, but most sound great. There are so many great reverbs now. IMO Empress Reverb is the most impressive. Neunaber Immerse is also amazing AF. Its all about personal taste though.
The source audio ventris is also really good. I've tried the rv-500 and ventris and both are good, depending on what you're wanting to do. I'd say that the rv-500 excels in the "normal" reverbs (spring, hall, room, etc.), being more nuanced, but it has some "redundant" reverbs and ones that don't sound that good on some of the other modes (for instance, you can't really dial in a shimmer that doesn't sound super bright and harsh.) The ventris on the other hand has great sounding algorithms, it's a lot smaller, and it's good for the tweaker and the minimalist (because you can deep dive with the app or just dial in a good dual reverb with the knobs.) The only drawbacks I'd say is that you can't save that many presets without midi (only 8), there's less EQ options, and you only have two footswitches to program. That being said I would definitely check it out if you get the chance, I tried it out with the pedal genie rental service.
@@tinekole i went with the rv500. Dual reverb, can emulate Cloud on BigSky, and i can use this on a smaller board since it has delay + reverb. Very very powerful for me. Basically, the cloud reverb is all that i wanted on the BigSky

never thought i’d see the day boss would make an appearance in a knobs video, but here we are, and it’s good
Tom Poynton true. Indie kids can finally give boss the OK
IMO they always made quality products, maybe not a lot of to fancy stuff...
Who knows maybe they will release a new version of a Roland Space echo in a unique enclosure.
@@dewberry3043 I will wait for that pedal til i inevitably die first anyway
it's really frickin' good!!

This is still the best reverb pedal in 2024.
Agreed n I own some really terrific reverb pedals. The ability to dive deep n edit really sets the RV 500 apart.
what pedals are y'all comparing it to? can it do the modulate setting on the rv-5?
Such a sneakily great pedal. I recently picked one up and it continues to impress, even after first impressions.
Mine is coming tomorrow! This video by the way is the best pedal demo I've ever seen. I wish all pedals were demoed this way.
The addition of the editor takes this pedal on a hole new level.
I am on a long train ride, and I am so glad I get to be wrapped in this warm blanket of sound for at least some of it.
This video, and then this pedal has sent me down a deeeeeeep rabbit hole. Love the RV500, thanks for showing off more than the presets Knobs!

Hello Knobs, thanks for a fantastic demo! One question: Why do you call the RV-500 a "Pseudo-Looper" (1:17)? I have had the pedal for a week now and I can't find any looping capabilities, although the Hold function is sweet. :-)
Set the hold to its max length and it will behave like a pseudo looper. Pseudo as in one layer that you can play over.
I need to figure out that tremolo reverb. That was cool.
I'm getting some big early Animal Collective vibes from this pedal. Reminds me of the effects they used on Feels.
Heck yeah
Yep,getting one.
Which one do you prefer boss rv500 or meris mercury?
And hear if Boss is planning to release a 200 line reverb? The 500s are just a bit (lot) overkill for what I need.
