  • Another month, another monthly. Welcome back.
This month is all about sampling, with a side of looping (of course). I find there's so much room to play when it comes to sampling, and we're going to use that idea to tour through some new devices. It's been a bit of a feast for me, I just love this stuff.
As is the custom, sponsorship disclaimer:
This is a sponsored, but unpaid video. The featured instruments were given to me, but all the thoughts and decisions were my own.
    TABLE OF CONTENTS:
    0:00 - I'm tired, the montage
    0:15 - Digitakt (intro)
    0:46 - Digitakt (from scratch)
    2:10 - Digitakt (loop sampling)
    3:39 - Digitakt (final thoughts)
    4:04 - Loupé (overview)
    5:05 - Loupé (from scratch)

    9:05 - Slate + Ash (landforms tour)
    11:58 - Slate + Ash (cycles tour)
    12:54 - Slate + Ash (the song i made)

The updated Patreon is in swing, including a Discord I've been really enjoying. I'll be announcing the second monthly Nudge challenge in a couple days. Maybe the prize is related to this video, I 'unno. Check it out maybe:

    This feels right.

I purchased Cycles because of your Polyend Tracker video. Went on a deep dive of granular, and Cycle's is by far my favorite program I've ever used. Ended up making a full album with it, and a video showing how I used it. I'd love to hear what other people make with it, I feel like it deserves lot more buzz and attention.

Sorry for the late response but I checked out his Polyend Tracker video and I don't notice him using Cycles in it. I would like to see what you're talking about though if possible? lol :)

@@BIG_PASTA I just meant that his Polyend Tracker vid introduced me to granular synthesis :) Cycles organizes audio bits in a very similar way visually, so seeing him break it down helped me understand what I was doing.

"Just standard orchestra sounds" is like the producer version of "I'm an accountant"

When I hear your music it reminds of the scraping of a tree branch across a window in a storm, and in the background I can faintly hear my fat cat getting stuck in the cat door and asking for help. very peaceful.

This is insane. I also love the atmosphere an orchestra warming up creates. So lovely, pure and simple.

Truly wonderful dude. The thing I have always cherished about you and your work/channel is that even if I think I know how to use a piece of gear or software, I nearly always watch something in your video that makes me want to RUN back to it and be like "ooooohhhhh!!! that's new!" So. Thank you. Thank you very much as always. Your friend, TJ

I also have all three Slate + Ash synths, and they are all joyous pleasures to explore and create in. For reveling in sliding, shifting textural changes, there is nothing like them. They (particularly Cycles and Landforms) have changed the kind of music I like to make.
I have 16n envy, though. Mmmmmm, pretty faders...

So how are you micing the guitar into the Digitakt? Does that need to go thru a preamp? I've used my Iridium line level output or like OP-1 output into Digitakt, but never anything mic level. Obviously I could google a bit, but just curious what your setup was for the video. Sounds great!

For the most part, anything you can do on the Digitakt you can do more powerfully in Octatrack. The downside is that the octatrack manual must be read, because many of its basic functions are not readily apparent.

when talking about the samplers you said; deeper, cheaper, more immediate. What exactly makes the teenage engineering OP1 more immediate?
Its one I dont have, but was thinking about

    • @Knobs

The OP-1 has a built-in mic & radio, and a faster and simpler workflow overall. But it also does less, as a sampler.

what is the advantage of those shitty brushed aluminum knobs on the loupe? have you ever accidentally banged or scratched your fingernail on the top of one of those? its a fucking nightmare. who ever asked for those things
