I am backtracking a bit... watching your videos AFTER my first larp event :) Your channel got recommended on the discord channel of our larp event just yesterday, aka your video(s) on dealing with larp blues... I'm very glad I found your channel, lots of things in this vid struck a chord. I had a very well-organised wonderful first larp event. Principles I discovered/applied during the 4 days: how much you put in determines how much you get out of it - immerse yourself - play to lift - say "yes" to many crazy sidequests - be aware of fomo and give yourself breaks (and extra sleep) when you need to :)

Oh wow, I'm very flattered to be recommended and that the recommendation was a good one. Those look like really good principles to me, getting involved and helping others have a great game are pretty good foundations for any new Larper. Sounds like you had loads of fun ☺️❤️

@@OurAdventuringParty Thanks for answering :) 5 days before the event I was getting so nervous, regularly getting a 'flight' reflex. I had to remind myself that the larp event sounded really cool & that I'd be dissapointed afterwards if I wouldn't go... I reached out to the event organisers with my panic and got the sweetest reply back... felt from then on that things would be ok... I feel very lucky that it was such a good and succesful larp event. People feedbacking on it on the discord channel are sharing happy memories and gratitude :)

I always get a sense of relief when someone keeps going to larp, as it can be a bit of a culture shock! Have a great time ❤️❤️❤️

    *reads title*
*feels conflicted, torn between need to argue anxiously-contrarily -- but how do you KNOW that I'll live??! -- & feeling relieved-encouraged*
    .
Love your definition of LARP as grownup live-action pokemon, (presumably now with added cosplay!). XD
    .
Good tips - especially the point of not keeping the animal-tempting foodstuffs with you in your properly outdoors-rated sleeping bag which you'll have in your tent that you of course remembered to purchase and practice setting up *before* the day of the event! ; D Nobody wants to wake up to a wild animal staring them in the face as they munch their hard-won stolen snacks.
    .
Really, all good advice and neatly and clearly laid out. : ) And safety, and the influence of overall LARP and individual event culture on it, is often an entirely forgotten or neglected element of discussion. So extra kudos to you!
    .
If at some point, you decide to transcribe these vids into written form (electronic, papercopy, or both), I'd grab a copy for my e-/bookshelf. And I volunteer as beta-reader; will offer edits & commentary in exchange for early-access! xD

Thank you, I'm glad I'm not just uttering nonsense out into the wilds of the internet. There's obviously a lot to think about when anyone starts any hobby that involves complex rules, overnight trips and diverse internal culture, so I'm just happy to help make anyone's lives just a bit easier 🙂 I might write all this down one day (I do save my scripts so I do technically have it written down now) but I'm still learning myself at the moment so not quite there yet 🙂 Thank you for the vote of confidence though, and for your volunteering. I am sincerely and incredibly flattered ☺️❤️

Definitely not nonsense, but also not shallow.
      .
Like, you know how magazines will have articles about the secrets to good health, and the advice is super basic like, "have you tried drinking water?" or if they're really pretending to go deep, "try filtered water!". They don't touch on, say, the fact that you need to balance your water intake with your electrolyte level, and avoid the artificial dyes and avoid the excessive sugars of gatoradesque drinks, and hey aspartame is pretty bad for you so if you must soda pop then at least try to not Sprite Zero. To give a very oversimplified example of what frustrates me about most How-To's and informationals.
      .
You touch on things newbies don't (yet) habitually think about, but you also break them down enough so that they have the contextual details that explain why something matters, and offer some possible solutions. BUT ALSO you do this concisely enough not to overwhelm us with a flood of info-dump that causes us (well, at least me!) not to tune out.
      .
Seriously, it's a fine balance that many 'professionals' fail to achieve. (Why, yes, English was my favourite subject in school, and I am indeed a voracious reader, why do you ask?? xD lol!)
      .
I don't get to watch vids as often as I'd like thanks to my home's location in a service-poor area and the toll that takes on my patience for the downloading and buffering of vids. But I'm slowly and sporadically making my way through my subsriptions. I don't comment much, but I promise I am here, appreciating! : )

The lesson here is COMMON SENSE.
Perfect... Now how do I avoid dying constantly like Kenny?

    • @OurAdventuringParty

I think "common sense" may be an expired term. I am neurodivergent, and one thing I have learned about myself is that what is blatantly obvious to others can go completely over my head. And vice versa. But I do believe that preparation is the key to success :)

That was very informative, thank you! I've been watching your videos for a few months now and I've learned so much about LARP through you! Still don't know when I'll have the opportunity to actually go to one since there is no LARP in Greece (though I admit I haven't done a thorough search), but if and when I actually get the chance, I'll for sure use your advice!

There are some very good larps in Poland, Germany and Italy that have heard of with the proper multilingual groups would expect from mainland Europe, would be highly surprised if there aren't a few in Greece too :)

    • @OurAdventuringParty
      @OurAdventuringParty  2 роки тому +1

I'm sure you'll find one :) Let me know if you do, I'm hoping for a trip to Greece in the near future so having a chance to larp there would be amazing! ❤️❤️

I was wondering something the other day, and it occurred to me that I do have someone to ask, if you don't mind me asking you, that is. But when you're "killed" in a game, do you just have to drop and lay there for the rest of the time and play dead? Can you still use your character next round? How do you know you're fatally wounded (not even touching on the "magic spells / defenses" part but pure pretend-physical damage)? I suppose that may differ between scenarios or associations, but is there a generally agreed-upon rule?
    .
Also, if I can go on pestering you, how do you know what actions are acceptable within the bounds of the scenario, assuming it's not pure melee? I've never DnD'd before, so I have no context to reference and transfer to LARP, and sometimes the open-endedness of it and/or LARP gets overwhelming to think of. Which is why I've so far mostly talked myself outta participating, although I have witnessed some similar events through the SCA.
    .
(I really just want to battle, though; boffer to the "death" in glorious pseudo-combat -- for which I am trying to self-teach myself swordsmanship -- not really engage in the elaborate courtly scenarios of SCA which I can never fully remember or keep track of and yes, I do feel guilty about that.)

There's no general agreed rule I'm afraid, there's way too many LARPs out there and all have different rule sets. In most of the games I play, if your character dies, you are allowed to create another, but that is in no way universal. Same with being fatally wounded. Different games mean different mechanics. The beauty of this hobby is also its curse: it is simply too big to agree on anything consistent between games.
Boundaries for your games should always be outlined somewhere, preferably in an official rulebook. It's great when everyone is on the same page, especially with roleplay where clear boundaries need to be set. If you cannot locate this, speak to your game organisers. They should set you on the correct path for what is acceptable and what is not.

You scared me for a moment there, haha, with that truthful answer about the diversity in rules of gameplay. But I feel a lot better knowing there's probably a rulebook or organizer I can get some clarification from!
