20 mph speed limit signs are a joke!

- Of all the places, there is an unclassified road [the 'Roman Road'], linking our village to the next one. 'Unsuitable for vehicles', you are still allowed to do 60 mph along it [if you can], as long as you slow down to 20 mph when things smooth out near the end of it!
Also, an unexpected bit of thunder, lightning and rain!
I have also noticed there are a lot of changes in speed limits along the same pieces of road 60 to 40 to 50 to 30 to 60 to 40 to 20, each one only a few hundred yards long, which means you are constantly looking at your speedo... Rather than looking at the road, where all the hazards are!

not only Wales, our local government had a public consultation in which a vast majority were against a 20 limit so they just ignored that and did it anyway.

I used to live up at pimpsait crugybar now in Bwlchllan. I know that road and the little train station. From what I have seen most people are sticking to the 30mph and ignoring the 20, it's stupid they want to control you and get cars and bikes off the roads. Nothing to do with climate or safety.

We've got two of those 20 mph signs at the top of our close here in England, "possibly 80 yards long," so helpful.
i did some trails up wales last week and the roads between were absolute hell , cyclists in the way of cars, cars in the way of bikes, cars in the way of walkers, everyone in each others way - just hell - almost like that was the plan from the start, make everyone hate each other that little bit more so you aren't paying attention to the real issues being played out - this 20mph shi7e has to be removed - FFS people, use your heads when you vote

Looks just like the the lanes in Devon 😂 but joking aside the reason they put up rd closed signs is because it takes away their responsibility too repair and maintain the Rd. Also where I live they are slowly replacing the National speed limit signs with 40 signs. And of course none of this applies if you ride a push bike because the speed limit does not apply to them 😮

The A48 from Bonvilston to the Cowbridge by-pass is 60mph. When you get to the by-pass, a dual carriageway, it reduces to 50mph.

In my NZ city the council is debating new 30kph limits within 1k of schools , which are everywhere , except on major routes . So most of the city will be 30kph . My concern is when a dangerous police pursuit gets called off the police still attempt to " keep eyes on " at the posted limits . That "keeping eyes on" will suddenly become extremely difficult at 30k when it is already nearly impossible at 50k . Way to make it easier for the offenders to make their getaways councilors ! ( sardonic applause )

Simple solution paint the 20 mph signs blue and 20 mph will then be the minimum speed to travel at.
30 kph (18.6 mph) zones are pretty wide spread in Europe nowadays. Sign of the times. But anyway the Cub sounds nice.

@@gavind9487 cyclists who can maintain speeds of 20mph and above will have a garmin or yahoo computer on their bikes, even a cheep cycling computer will give fairly accurate speed readings

I don’t think (I probably should) that cyclists have a speed limit, there was a news item last week of cyclists riding over the 30 mph limit through a village and the Police could do no more than warn them! @@mhowers

All signage is installed after reference to a map. The policy makers never go there, the Apparatchiks never go there, the councils officers never go there. In fact the only people who go there are the folk who actually put the signs up.
To install one sign there will be four men in two vans to install the roadworks signs, four men to set up the traffic lights using two more vans, a comfort station supplied by two men in one van , a H&S compliance bloke in a company car, a sex and race non discrimination advisor and one man earning less than anyone else who digs the hole with a pick and shovel, mixes the concrete by hand and puts the sign up. No wonder this fucking country is going to the dogs.
Round here they’re absolutely fine. It’s no biggy at all . They’ve actually put some thought into it.

The traffic sign industry has good relations with the government! I wonder when they will have all the ant trails limited with some speed limits and signs?
They sneaked loads of these in in the Scottish Borders over lockdown. They are routinely and almost universally ignored and are in all probability unenforceable anyway. The road design regarding footways, street lighting and traffic calming furniture doesn't fulfill the criteria for even a 30 limit in most cases. It's a shame because they previously had dynamic 20 limits in school zones (20mph when the lights flash at school times) and these were mostly obeyed and in my oppinion a good idea. Now it just blends into the background of politically motivated unecessary limits. The worst one I've seen is on the A827 alongside Loch Tay which was NSL and now has 20mph signs over a long stretch of several miles where there are about 6 very expensive houses set at least 200 yards back off the road at the end of long drives. I'd put money on one or more of those houses belonging to a local councillor.
Scottish Borders person here, they're only ignored by folk who don't GAS about the safety of others.
This is just one example of the madness 😂 most agree 20mph in some places like near schools.

I can see the point of 20 mph for very short lengths of highway ,outside schools ,hospitals ,housing estates & busy high streets. I can’t see the need on long stretches of A & B road. I live in England a few miles from the North Wales border , I can tell you the people of Wales are not alone ,we suffer similar madness from our local governments concerning our speed limits .

The new 20mph limits are preparing us in the uk for the near future, when personal transport for the masses will be cycles or a horse for country folk.
You're being rather optimistic: personal transport for the masses will be walking, like it was for millennia. People are being fooled into thinking that once fossil fuels are gone, there'll be something to replace them, on the same scale. There won't. Our descendants will live like our ancestors did.
I'll personally buy a motorcycle instead, easy to get around the 20mph traffic jams and just ride no plate before i comply to this authoritarian bollocks, not like police will be able to chase me when theres 5 miles of 20mph traffic and im gone lol
Speed "limits" are not an indication of how safe it is to travel on said road. They are purely a legally enforcable limit, usually enforced where people not enclosed in a metal shell are likely to be.

Mr henshaw, i watch nearly all of your videos, & i'm a little bit taken aback at your rather unfair criticism of the 20 mph speed limits, after all you young hotrodders & your hopped up olde triumphs etc. go roaring through these country lanes at unheard of speeds, knocking over olde pensioner ladies & their cats, willy nilly, whatever can you expect, someone has to step up to the plate & take you young delinquents to task for your own good & the good of the public at large. There, i hope you feel properly chastised & will think more carefully in the future when you feel the uncontrollable urge to race along at speeds of 21 or say 22 mph. It's not legal to do sixty on a road like that just because the signs are there. The driver is expected to match his speed to prevailing conditions such as road surface, sight lines and such. Doing thirty down there could leave you open to a charge of dangerous driving if you were to hit a kid on a bike.

I belong to a motorhome club and we were coming up next April for a week. Since the new limit, all of us can’t bothered to travel under such ridiculous and draconian speed laws. We are now having our rally in Yorkshire. So with 32 people, three camp sites, many gallons of fuel, pub lunches etc etc, the economy of wales has probably lost about £25-£30 thousand over one week. I wonder how much more your economy will be losing in future.

I’ve been out a lot since the change to 20. Absolutely no issues and most whinging comes with embarrassing excuses.
I went out in Friday to put a video out . After 3 hours of riding absolutely nothing to show. Signage perfectly OK, no issues around tailgating speeding overtaking congestion cars with blown up gearboxes motorcyclists unable to cope with their bikes motorcyclists finding their bikes won’t cope. Journeys haven’t been any longer either. Nothing that people have been claiming.
Nothing. Nada. All hunky dory.
Oh and traffic in one 20 ran better than the subsequent 30 that many claim don’t exist.

I live about a quarter of the way along a straight cul-de-sac which is about 100 yards long. There is a 20mph sign outside my house. As daft as it seems, I don't mind this one because I have actually been overtaken in the street by some clown in a 4x4, who had to accelerate hard, presumably to give himself the opportunity to brake hard in order to avoid slamming into the garages at the end. On the other hand, there is a 20mph zone through the local "village" area that would be fair enough if it didn't extend right out of the village along a straight, wide road with minimal pedestrian traffic for about half a mile. I wonder what thought process goes into setting up some of the speed limits, if any.
A piece of metal with 20 on it won't stop dangerous drivers.
