  • We recently discovered that ONE of our Goodyear Endurance Tires was having uneven wear on our two axle trailer so in this video you will see what I discovered and my step by step replacement of the axle. I'm not sure if this axle has had this problem when we purchased it new 3 years ago or it happened sometime after, I know I've never hit anything while pulling the trailer. (We have towed our trailer 20,000 miles and discovered the problem at 15,000 miles) I hope this video helps you should you ever have the same problem.

Good video, thank you. We had the same issue on our 2018 Airstream. It was replaced under warranty. I called Airstream about the Goodyear Endurance tire that it ruined, and they referred me directly to Dexter. Dexter was super to work with and they offered replacement (reimbursement) of both tires on that axle. Took a while but I did eventually receive a check. It was relatively painless with the exception of Airstream gladly passing the buck and being relatively unhelpful. Good to see a company like Dexter stepping up, not just for me but for you too.

Michael Bracewell After a long trip through Utah I noticed uneven wear on the outside of a rear tire. Tire was almost bald and only a year and a half old. I had to take it to our local dealer for other issues and had them look at it as a warranty issue. They said the axle was bad and had put in for replacement. They replaced the axle and left the bald tire on it. When I brought it up, they said Airstream had refused and they encouraged me to go fight it out with customer service. The AS rep told me they refer those issues to the manufacturer and gave me the number number. I called, talked to a guy, and he was very understanding. He asked if it was just the one tire and I said yes, but they advised I at least replace in pairs. He agreed, talked it over with someone, and told me to email him the bill. That week I just had the whole set of four replaced at Discount Tire. Dexter paid half. Worth a try if you want to give it a shot.

When buying our first new semi tractor quite a few years ago..We had problems with front steer tires wearing..The truck dealer blamed it on the tire brand..The tire dealer blamed it on road hazard conditions..After several expensive tire replacement..The alignment was suppose to have been done at the factory..When we took the vehicle to a heavy duty alignment place especially done for large vehicles. The alignment was way off..The next vehicles/trailers purchased new tire replacement,or if tires showing wear we had alignment checked. That hub needing grease coming like that from the dealer should never be..Terrible a buyer has to go behind to check to see if everything is done correctly.. Later on we also found out from a different tire dealer we didn't have a heavy enough tire ply on our steers..Costly mistakes for the buyer..Thank you for the video..Have a Blessed Day..

I have a comment on the jacking on the axle. If I am not mistaken Airstream uses the same axle but tells customers that jacks and axles should never meet- to use jack points. Has something changed with regard to the rubber axles? A bent axle would seemingly cause the same problem you are trying to fix. I am glad you were able to get it all worked out.

    • @thetraveltrailerguy
      @thetraveltrailerguy  Рік тому

Great question Rodney, thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Yep these axles are not made to jack up a trailer because they will bend. If you notice I jacked up the trailer to remove the tires on the frame between the axles. I did lift the new axle in place by balancing it with the one jack in the middle to lift and bolt it in place (I was not lifting the trailer so the only weight I was lifting was the axle).
It all worked out and I'm happy they supplied a replacement axle. Since I posted this its crazy how many people have contacted me to get details on how to get the same replacement axles since theirs are bent and they all have gotten replacements at no cost.
A couple weeks ago I had a neighbor that bought a new Airstream a year ago and both his axles were bent, he saw my video on line and came to my house to get details on how to get replacements, I gave him advice and he received two new axles from Dexter within a week.

Good Video i personally think that most of these issues are results of the manufacturers attempts at lightening the weight of the trailers so they meet being able to make Specifications of being pulled by more of todays vehicles they do it by using thinner Steel thats just not up to the task of holding the axles ( poor Engineering IMO ) and the Axles get put under too much stress i will hand it to Dexter for sending you out the replacement at no cost ! Happy Camping BTW my sisters family bought a Jayco Camper and the frame got all twisted out of alignment under normal conditions Jayco did cover the repairs by authorizing a dealership to pull the frame and weld gusset repairs to strengthen the Frame that has Stamped Ovals throughout the entire thing for weight reduction on their first trip with the Camper I pointed out to my Brother In Law i didnt like the look of that design as im a Airstream guy anyway his comment was well its under warranty at this point ! I also thought it was too large for the 6Cylinder SUV they had pulling it and he told me it was within Specs ! im the opposite when pulling i prefer to have way more tow vehicle than is reccomended and it makes towing easier as well as being more in controll. in the event of emergencies i prefer Amrican Made full sized Dually Deisel pick up trucks as that combination has allowed me to keep control of my trailer and vehicle in all kinds of conditions including snow, rain, and high windy situations plus the Duall wheels helps out in braking one time i lost a front right tre and rim. off my truck with a trailer intow and i was capable of bringing everything to a safe stop

The same happened to me, Dexter replaced the axle but did not cover the labor to install it which happens most of the time with lots of things. As you can see I replaced mine myself but if you don't have the tools you need to take it somewhere to have it done. You should get a better deal if you take it to a brake shop to have it done, most of them will do this for you and probably for much less than a RV dealer. You can have the axle delivered to your house and then take it with you to the brake shop. The dealer should do it for no charge if the trailer is still under warranty but if the trailer isn't I understand why they won't. Thank you so much for watching and good luck

Pics were clear, vocals were articulate. It's amazing how many You Tube folks slur their words & make fuzzy pics. Did Dexter question if you had gone over exceptionally rough terrain before granting you the new axle? Yep jacking the trailer up in the center of the axle with the full weight of the trailer WILL bend the axle. That's why I jack the trailer up at the frame between the axles. I jacked the axle in place installing it being careful not to apply pressure onto the axle. Thanks for watching :)

After I sent pictures, tire tread depths, and completed their warranty consideration investigation form they had their enginers look at everything and said " It appears that the front axle has one tire with a serious toe-in condition" and then sent this email to me " Our warranty policy does not arbitrarily cover alignment, bent axle/spindle, camber, toe, abnormal tire wear complaints or regular or inadequate maintenance issues. We have no control over how the unit is towed, loaded, serviced or what other conditions the axles or parts may encounter during usage so our warranty policy normally does not arbitrarily cover these conditions, unfortunately we must respectfully decline warranty consideration for this claim request.
What we can offer to help assist the customer with this reported issue would be a customer concession for a replacement axle shipped to you at No Charge. We would not be able to cover labor or any other expenses for this reported issue that is not covered under our warranty policy.
When Dexter Axle agrees or offers to supply a replacement axle to a customer as a ?customer concession? this is being done strictly as a goodwill gesture. Customer concessions are not intended to convey or construe this action as warranty.

Lovely, another thing to worry about. I posted in your other video about the Dexter E-Z lube job that I take along all kinds of suspension parts with us when we travel. What now? Do I need to order a complete axle to take along!!! It's too much. They make these RV's like junk. We've had so many problems with our 2019 Coachmen Catalina. Bought it new. The biggest problem we had was leaks when it rains. I already replaced the slide seals. Then it leaked above our bed where the front of the trailer meets the roof. Used sealant to fix that. It's one thing after another. If it continues to nickel and dime us, I'm unloading it.

@@thetraveltrailerguy Hi Mike, thanks for sending the information!! I actually used the Dicor Self Leveling Sealant. I thought it would work. It went on nice and then it leaked again above our bed about 2 months later. Went on the roof to look at it and it kind of cracked and split in some areas. You know, when you are pulling these campers, they are constantly shaking and bouncing. So then I used Flex Seal and guess what??? No more problems. I put 2 coats of it across the seam and so far, it's been almost a year and hasn't leaked. I thought that Flex Seal was a stupid commercial with their products, but now I swear by them. If I get more leaks, I may try that Eterna Bond Tape next. We have a 2019 Coachmen Catalina 243RBS. We haven't really used it that much for us to have roof leaks. The worst was when I had the trailer parked at our house. It poured rain for a couple of days. A week later, I put the slide out and it was a waterfall coming inside the trailer from the top of the slide. Water had leaked past the outside seal and accumulated on top of the slide inside the trailer. So putting the slide out, it came over like Niagara Falls!! I told my wife that if we continue to get problems with this camper, it has to go! Again, thanks for taking the time to send the information. Gary

We've had this trailer for 4+ years and really like it. So far it has done very well holding up, I did have to rebuild the Murphy Bed but that was a manufacturing flaw. We replaced the mattress soon after we bought it because the original one had no support and was very cheap and the topper we bough for it did not help at all.
Soon after buying and using it we found when the Murphy Bed was down there was a big gap between the mattress and the front of the trailer where our pillows would fall when we were sleeping so I came up wit this solution that works really well ua-cam.com/video/bfN87DOZDUw/v-deo.html
We really like this 2017 Rockwood Mini Lite 2504S trailer, they stopped making it a couple years ago and came out with another one like it that is pretty nice but the new ones have a front windshield that some people love and hate, some people are reporting the front windshield can crack and while sleeping by it you can feel the coldness from it. So I'm happy we have one without the front window even though it looks really cool.
My wife and I use this trailer a lot and pretty much go camping year round every two weeks for 3-4 nights at a time and have gone on a 40 & 30 & 35 day trips with no problems, you will have small things come up from time to time like screws coming loose or something but they are easy fixes and I make sure I always repair things right away so all the little things don't become big problems down the road.
Bottom line is we would buy this trailer again, Rockwood trailers are made very well compared to many trailers out there.

First - I drew an over head view of the axles with tires showing the tread groves on each tire and made sure I wrote which one was the front and rear axle, I also drew where the frame was just inside the tires on each side. I did this so I could record the information you will see I collected below on this drawing :
      (1) So what I did was put a straight edge against the trailer tires and took a picture showing how much of a gap was showing between the tire and the straight edge and wrote down the measurement. Then I went to the other side of the trailer and did the same thing (on the other side there was no gap and the axle spindle was straight. Record all this information on the drawing.
      (2) I then took measurements from the trailer frame to the inside edges of each tire and wrote down those measurements. What this did was show them more proof that a spindle was bent. Record all this information on the drawing.
      (3) Then I measured the depth of the tread in each tire grove and recorded all this information on the drawing. If a axle or spindle is bent you will see abnormal wear in the tires tread.
      (4) I took a photo of my drawing with all the information to send to them in the form below (open that link). They have several questions you will need to answer on the form but its fairly simple to do. They should get back to you in a few days and if not call them.
      (5) You can submit all your information to Dexter and call them if you have any questions www.dexteraxle.com/Contact/Warranty-Claims

How many miles do you think you put on the tire before it would have been noticed? What kind of frame shop could correct problem and how much would it cost? Thank you for watching my videos Ronald and I'm sorry I'm not getting back to you sooner but we were out camping :) I'll do my best to answer your questions. I'm not sure if this axle has had this problem when we purchased it new 3 years ago or it happened sometime after, I know I've never hit anything while pulling the trailer. (We have towed our trailer 20,000 miles and discovered the problem at 15,000 miles); Regarding a frame shop, I'm not sure but I would recommend searching tire and brake shops in your area and giving them a call, I'm sure they can recommend a good shop in your area that does this type of work; Regarding rotating your tires instead of fixing the problem, this would be your choice. It all depends on if you will be towing the trailer several miles per year or less. If it was me I would at least see how much it would cost to have the problem corrected, it may be less than we think. I sure hope this information is helpful

We are told we have a bent axle. Only one tire was wearing a bit on the inside. We are due to vacation in 2 weeks. Cannot get it dixed b4 then. The trailer repair company said they may be able to try something else that would allow us to go on vacation. We have a spare, and brand new tires. Can you still travel with a bent axle, an just change the tire out when wear seems bad? Or is it not a good idea to travel with the bent axle?

Hello and thanks for watching and your question :) What I have to say is my opinion on what I would do if this was happening to me so please don't hold me responsible if you do this and something goes wrong :)
First I would like to start off saying from what I can tell at the time I discovered our bent axle it was probably bent and the trailer towed for a couple years and we camp a lot (every two weeks year round & on a few 1,000 + mile trips). So when I discovered the problem I was okay towing the trailer this way and only the tire had wear on the tread area, I probably could have towed the trailer several more miles this way. I did not notice any difference in towing the trailer with the bent axle compared to having a axle that wasn't bent, all that was happening was there was more wear on the tire tread. The axle bearings were not showing additional heat from the axle being bent while towing.
How many miles do you plan on driving on your trip? What is the make and model of your trailer?

@Michael Bracewell The Travel Trailer Guy thank you for responding. We have a 26 ft viking 2021. Duel axle. We have a tire sensor that senses temp and pressure. The wear is only on one tire, and not really that bad. We put on new tires, but got it checked out at a trailer shop due to the wear on the one old tire. They said the axle is bent a bit near that tire. They don't think it's dangerous to drive but suggest we take a spare along. Our trip will be 2000 miles. I talked to several people today and only one strongly suggested not driving it on a bent axle. I will by no means hold you responsible for your thoughts on this matter. According to our repair ship, who are highly reputable, there doesn't appear to be anything more serious wrong with it.

@Michael - what did they say about the warranty? Why were you close to expiration? I thought these axles have a 5 year warranty. If I remember correctly, you have a 2018 Mini-Lite? I've got a bent axle causing the front right wheel to toe out. I'm going to file a claim with Dexter and could use any pointers you have for me.

We have a 2017 Rockwood Mini Lite 2504S that we purchased in October 2016. What I did was contact Dexter and let them know of the problem, They wanted to know what axle I had (you get this information off the sticker located on each axle) they asked me to send pictures (I sent a picture with the level against the tires like you see in the video and others to them and the wear on the tire) and a explanation of what is wrong and email them to the guy I talked to on the phone, he then forwarded everything I sent to Dexter Engineers to review, then the original person I contacted me to let me know they would be sending me at no cost a new axle but they would not be paying for installation. Give them a call and they will let you know what you need to do. I hope you get back to me and let me know how it goes? What year and model trailer do you have?

Since it was heavy it was strapped to a pallet and delivered on a large box truck that had a electric lift gate and the driver used a pallet jack and placed it in our garage. this is an older video now, but I'm curious why the axle couldn't be taken to an alignment shop? that toe in wasnt that bad, would have been an hour and a half job to fix at my shop without replacing the whole thing.

Yep I changed it out not to long ago in November 2019. Thanks for letting me know it could have been fixed. I still have the axle I took out, if I sell it on Craig's list how much do you think I could get for it? Thanks for your comment :)

      @Fovamp 3 роки тому +1

@@thetraveltrailerguy yeah sending you a whole new axle with brakes and drums is a steal. I would just hold onto that axle in case something happens to the two on your trailer. the odds of selling it aren't great cause the buyer would have to have the exact same trailer for the hub face/bracket measurements/bracket height to match, almost every trailer is built just a little bit different, even sometimes two trailer of the same brand/style don't match
