    In this series, I'm doing a part tutorial, part vlog, part timelapse of my 1989 Toyota mk1 MR2 AW11 restoration project.
    This is a bit of a different episode as I look at the mk1a MR2 my dad bought, as well as the loads of spare parts it came with. Plus a special look at an engine.

    EDIT: for anyone looking to buy MR2 parts, I’ll either make a post or video about it later on my channel with an eBay link or contact email. Could be a little fund raiser event or something. I just have to go through everything and decide what I do and don’t need still.
    Three MR2 videos in a row hahaha. I am in fact working on a film camera series to bring back my vintage videos so stay tuned for that to come up. A special car video is in the works too. The MR2 videos have just been much easier to make while I plan bigger videos, finish school (my last quarter!), and work.
    Hopefully something cool comes out of the engine rebuild series, but I am still trying to decide what to do money, timing, and video wise with it. I'm really excited for whatever the future holds though.
    Thanks for watching!

    What a buy! I paid 3k for a mk1b just a few weeks ago that's going to need all kinds of work and may never be viable for a full restore because of rust issues. Your dad schooled us both, lol.

    I'm paying 10k for one in late 2022 but the car is SUPER clean. I'm paying for a non-project car. 12 years of ownership, everything taken care of, everything works, virtually no missing bits, no major cosmetic flaws. It's higher miles but at this point a clean well maintained car will save you a lot of money in the long run (for all the stuff you don't have to do and get to just enjoy the car)

    An engine rebuild series would be SUPER helpful. What do you think it will cost to rebuild?

    • @RetraCast
      @RetraCast  3 роки тому +1

      I talked about it in the video a bit. It really depends when you take it apart and inspect all the parts for what needs to be replaced. Could be anywhere from under $1000 to near $2000. I’d say this engine is probably in fairly rough shape since it’s seized so I’d say this specific one is closer to $1500. But that’s a safe estimate, and guess, could be less if lucky. Best case scenario you just replace gaskets, rings, seals, bearing, and other tune up stuff and it’s like $500-700. But for this engine that’s most likely not the case.
      When rebuilding you typically wanna replace some stuff like pumps just to be safe too cuz you’re already there vs doing it later when it’s in the car again. So that kinda stuff adds up to that higher range cost too.

    • @jasonengelbrecht6354
      @jasonengelbrecht6354 3 роки тому

      Everything depends on what you want to do. If you want to put a turbo on it you have to upgrade, but the 4agze internals it strong to handel 1 bar easy. I have just finished my 4agze build and running strong.

    Ooh, manual window winders on the spare doors, they're pretty rare.
    Interesting that it seems to have the later chunky plastic steering wheel... both my Mk1As have had this one with exposed metal spokes, which I much prefer, though it feels really wide at first. Maybe it was different in the US?

    Love the blue! Be interesting to see how your own car project goes after this...

    • @RetraCast
      @RetraCast  3 роки тому

      Yeah I honestly kinda wish my MR2 has the manual window cranks for reliability. As for the steering wheel yeah I’ve heard only some early mk1as came with the 3 spoke cuz I’ve never seen it myself. I know they are rarer. It must be a US thing to have the chunkier 2 spoke one cuz later mk1bs came with the all plastic 3 spoke that I have

    • @DruggedBunny
      @DruggedBunny 3 роки тому

      @@RetraCast Yeah, my electric winders are pretty crappy, think it's pretty common... the manual winders look way cooler!
      Not sure, but I believe most UK cars have the chunky plastic wheels... I always feel disappointed when I see them, I must admit, not a fan! The metal one has a kind of old-school Toyota look, but is really big, probably to help with the lack of power steering, so definitely not to everyone's taste

      Well I am daily driving it still cuz I have no other car other than the Celica. As for salt, they just laid some the other day cuz it snowed a ton. Just had to wait out the snow before trying to drive it again.

    • @reiokei4275
      @reiokei4275 3 роки тому

      @@RetraCast ahhh, totally understandable.
      Next question. Let's say you daily drive the mr2 every day. Especially in snow. Would washing underneath the car rid of salt entirely? I'm asking because I'm about to daily drive my aw11 pretty soon and I would like to avoid the rust effect lol

    • @RetraCast
      @RetraCast  3 роки тому

      Pretty sure if you want to entirely clean the bottom side you gotta take it to a place to do an under wash or there’s like a specific process or tools for it. Haven’t looked into it too much myself though. If you’re really worried then probably don’t do it. Personally for me I’m gonna go through and cut out any rust (if there is any) and recoat the bottom someday so it’s not as big a concern for me.
      As for driving the car in the snow, it just sounds like a bad idea. I mean you can do whatever if you’re careful but the car is literally famous for spinning out.
