Thank you for being transparent about the process of moonlighting. It's hard getting details from residents sometimes since it involves the topic of money. Could you do a video about advice in finding moonlighting gigs? Or what we can do during PGY1 to be in a good position for getting these opportunities the next year?

Family medicine PGY-3 here and enjoy moonlighting on the side. Here in Cali the 79k per year resident salary is hardly enough to live comfortably. The urgent care hourly wage of $160 per hour has been very helpful in terms of additional income. Covering urgent care about 25-40 hrs per 2week payperiod which is manageable. I think the attendings make even more covering urgent care. I enjoy moonlighting…have significantly gained so much more experience with sick kiddos and procedures (ingrown toenail removal, joint aspirations, laceration repairs, and eye stuff). I love the flexibility of picking up any shifts that can vary from 4, 6, 9, 12 hrs. I’m planning to still pick up hours after graduation in addition to my job because I love it so much. Love it because no night coverage and latest you work is 9p. No more nights!!!

Great video! I'm thinking about internal medicine as a back up specialty and trying to see what the avenues are for increasing income especially because of the typically week on/ week off schedule. Moonlighting for 2 days on "weeks off" seems like it could be a good balance of extra income without too much extra burden

Speaking of COVID, do you know of any physicians that you worked with that refused the vaccine?

I know a physician's wife who did but she has important medical issues that made her hesitate.
All of their children were vaccinated, of course. In a 1000 bed med. center, I know of none who aren't vaccinated and boosted. In the hospital setting, I certainly would not want to be in proximity to any coworker who wasn't vaccinated.

When I was a fellow and had a little "spare time", I studied. But spare time was rare because there were always opportunities to learn more. Fellowship is that time when you are surrounded by outstanding experts in your field who are there to help you become outstanding, too. Every hour should be fruitful.
