- Lesson on Albinism. The genetic condition known as albinism is more aptly known as oculocutaneous albinism due to its ocular and cutaneous manifestations. An individual with albinism is colloquially known as an “albino”. Oculocutaneous albinism is a group of rare genetic conditions of melanin biosynthesis, with a total of 7 different subtypes of the condition. The “Classic” subtype, which is type 1 oculocutaneous albinism, is due to a deficiency of the tyrosinase enzyme, which leads to decreased/absent production of melanin, leading to hypopigmentation. This mechanism is the cause of the ocular and cutaneous manifestations. Due to the hypopigmentation, individuals with albinism are at risk for particular adverse events, which can be treated with preventative measures to help reduce the risk of onset of these event.

Did you guys ever saw a podcast called Life with Albnism? Is very good to understand a lot about the daily like of albinos. My husband is albino
Very nice!!! This video really helps me to study to my exams. Thank you for giving us a little bit of your time to help us with this content.
very interesting! :D a few visual examples of all the types would have been nice thought :) But very nice video.
What about flash vep for albinism diagnosis?
Albinism has big disadvantages and can mean harder life not just for humans but also animals, but there are several other mutations that can occur in animals
Melanism being the first one that come in minvd when we think opposite of albinism, unlike albinism where decreased or no pigment in every part of the body, melanism has opposite it is increased production of melanin in pigment unlike albinism, beacuse of that melanism appears in black or dark brown color. Mutation sligltly same as albinism but not exactly is leucism, it also has decreased pigmentation production of melanin like albinism but it appears white to creamy appearance and it only affects skin and hair, sometimes it occurs partially it's called partial leucism or piebald or pied, that's when some parts of skin is white, you are normal with white parts that don't have pigment. Also another mutation is erythrism wich makes your skin reddish color and in some insects makes body entirely pink
Thank you
this is amazing .. thank you
Are the Tyrosinase in OCA1 and OCA3 the same? I more ask cause I don't want mess up with the fact that they same even though they actually different with the different color and capitalization.
thank you
🤦🏼♂️😒 why our eyes gotta be fcked up, yall don’t understand how hard it is to be a person with albinism
So pretty much we would be a albino person
Nice
does this mean anyone who isn’t copper colored albino ?
I don't have albinism, I have dark hair, eyes and eyebrows. But my skin is very light, especially my legs, because I use a lot of pants. I don't go out in the sun very often. But, when I do, I burn very easily too.
thhanks! what is tha way to stop it?
What kind of sunglasses should albino wear. I know someone in Tanzania who is very poor and I want to help her with things that she needs to keep her healthy.
5:46 so this subtype can be healthier in terms of eyesight and skin protection than type a?
What??? There's type OCA & OA. OCA has around four variations.
I have oca1b
Over the years my eyesight has gotten a lot better (my glasses are -3.5 and 0 now). I do get a tan it just takes a long time and not as much as the rest of my family.
I still have all of the other eye problems and visually I present like most other pale blonde Scandinavians. I have blonde hair, and I am pale but not so much that I stand out and people can tell I have albinism by looking at me.
I was actually only diagnosed officially in my late 20s with genetic testing. Before that it was just said I had albinism or ocular albinism, because of course I couldn’t have OCA because I have pigmented skin…
I think I may have it. I've been told my body doesn't have/produce melanin. I was bullied all through school because I wasn't tan like the other kids. People would tell me to get sun I hated that one. I will only burn, if too long in the sun I get BIG blisters. My eyes are super sensitive to the sun and they are blue but white around the pupil. I used fake tan lotions and spray tan but that made the bullying worst.
Yea I understood everything it was very simple and not hard to follow who knows nothing about this very visual great job
can i have the pathways for all four OCA
As a biomedical scientist, this video is so helpful to me. I really wished more light had been thrown on the pathophysiology of the other subtypes but all in all, thanks so much. 😊
I got oca type 2
Is not albinism x link recessive not autosomal ?!
A version of OA is x-linked, but most is recessive.
Very Canadian
Getting bullied for this...
Beat them up.
Who is bullying you? Let me know and I'll handle them for you fam
I just know that you're beautiful
@@flowerpatchtoons1101 They only get bullied because they look cooler than the bully
They are just jealous
My biggest dream to get marry with albina ❤️
don't fetishize people for external traits it's creepy and they will hate you 👍
❤️👌
I wish ur dreams mever comes true
Am I the only albino who just scrolls through videos about my condition to find my fellow albinos
🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
The science should find cure for this condition.
Appeal for it.
Not all of us want to be cured
@@vanillabean9652 ...And is that a reason to not look for a way to cure this? Albinism can cause problems with the eyes and skin protection so it doesn’t hurt to try and find a way to stop this from happening
probebaly some kind of gene therapy to replace the unwanted gene
@@thetiredworm2100 she/he did not say that the scientist shouldnt look for a cure. She/he just said Not all people wants to be cured. There is nothing wrong with scientists looking for cures for this. So read the comment again perhaps?
@@vanillabean9652 if some people don’t want to be cured they don’t have to get the antidote, though most people do so there is no reason not to make one. if you are against making a cure you are just selfish.
*Kelbinism*
Albinism is hereditary not genetic…
And what’s passed from parents to offspring? Genes.
That's a dumb thing to say
This comment is so stupid
Same difference!😊
Uhhh....
