  • Lesson on Albinism. The genetic condition known as albinism is more aptly known as oculocutaneous albinism due to its ocular and cutaneous manifestations. An individual with albinism is colloquially known as an “albino”. Oculocutaneous albinism is a group of rare genetic conditions of melanin biosynthesis, with a total of 7 different subtypes of the condition. The “Classic” subtype, which is type 1 oculocutaneous albinism, is due to a deficiency of the tyrosinase enzyme, which leads to decreased/absent production of melanin, leading to hypopigmentation. This mechanism is the cause of the ocular and cutaneous manifestations. Due to the hypopigmentation, individuals with albinism are at risk for particular adverse events, which can be treated with preventative measures to help reduce the risk of onset of these event.

Albinism has big disadvantages and can mean harder life not just for humans but also animals, but there are several other mutations that can occur in animals
Melanism being the first one that come in minvd when we think opposite of albinism, unlike albinism where decreased or no pigment in every part of the body, melanism has opposite it is increased production of melanin in pigment unlike albinism, beacuse of that melanism appears in black or dark brown color. Mutation sligltly same as albinism but not exactly is leucism, it also has decreased pigmentation production of melanin like albinism but it appears white to creamy appearance and it only affects skin and hair, sometimes it occurs partially it's called partial leucism or piebald or pied, that's when some parts of skin is white, you are normal with white parts that don't have pigment. Also another mutation is erythrism wich makes your skin reddish color and in some insects makes body entirely pink

I don't have albinism, I have dark hair, eyes and eyebrows. But my skin is very light, especially my legs, because I use a lot of pants. I don't go out in the sun very often. But, when I do, I burn very easily too.

      I have oca1b
Over the years my eyesight has gotten a lot better (my glasses are -3.5 and 0 now). I do get a tan it just takes a long time and not as much as the rest of my family.
I still have all of the other eye problems and visually I present like most other pale blonde Scandinavians. I have blonde hair, and I am pale but not so much that I stand out and people can tell I have albinism by looking at me.
I was actually only diagnosed officially in my late 20s with genetic testing. Before that it was just said I had albinism or ocular albinism, because of course I couldn’t have OCA because I have pigmented skin…

I think I may have it. I've been told my body doesn't have/produce melanin. I was bullied all through school because I wasn't tan like the other kids. People would tell me to get sun I hated that one. I will only burn, if too long in the sun I get BIG blisters. My eyes are super sensitive to the sun and they are blue but white around the pupil. I used fake tan lotions and spray tan but that made the bullying worst.
