Velvet Underground, Television, Siouxsie and The Banshees, Joy Division, Dinosaur JR, The Cure, Sonic Youth, Jesus and Mary Chain, Cocteau Twins, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine

Chameleons: influential post-punk band with early use of big, layered guitars. First album came out in '83.

They, most importantly, invented the 2000s New York band Interpol

Proto-everything band Velvet Underground and Hüsker Dü for the wall of guitar sound.
I'd have stuck the Velvets at the start of this video.
What about AR Kane? And Wedding Present and early House of Love were influences too, in their own way. I strongly remember Ride being described in a Jan 1990 edition of NME as "the House of Love with distortion".
Lyrically, you could argue Nick Drake was an influence.
Creation was also home to Ride and the Boo Radleys - not just Slowdive and MBV. (And the House of Love....)
The Valentines play an interesting dual role. In 87/88 it isn't a scene. "Isn't Anything" influences Neil Halstead, Mark Gardiner, et al... kickstarting shoegazing.
And as much as MBV were shoegazers, they were never part of the "Scene that Celebrates Itself." (Mind you, at the time, Stereolab and Blur were most definitely part of the scene, at least socially. But that's another story....

Galaxie 500 paved the way for the shoegaze genre for there own version of dream pop in America and a big influence on slowcore too
