I only say this once: I was there when this song was written. And I can tell you this: the version of Dave Matthews is the best ever. What makes the difference is the singing, the violin, the sax, the drummer and the easy start, slowly exploding into a massive climax. Goosebumps everytime I listen to it. This is what every live performance should bring. Power to Dave Matthews!!!
WAIT What? You were there when this song was written; again, WAIT What? (It's) Too bad this comment is eleven years old. It seems a good story of Bob writing while recovering has gotten away from us. 😞
I remember watching this when i was 12 on TV. i had never heard of the Dave matthews Band and i didnt know who sang the song originally. i didnt understand the words (i couldnt even make out half of them) but i was just mezmorised by the feeling the song induced in me.... great song.
I remember downloading this video back in like 1999 or 2000 on Kazaa w/ a 56k dial up modem. I started downloading it one night and went to bed. Got up, went to school, and when I got home it was just finishing up. When I finally watched it, it totally shattered my brain.
man really u said .........ever , ur older then me by at least 20 years......wich means u might have seen the real hendrix play this song. i love daves version but i just cant bring my self to say its better then the real hendrix's version.
I've never been a DM fan but wow- they did an awesome job on this- great arrangement, awesome drummer & sax player- and Dave kinda stepped outside of himself for the growly vocals when they brought up the tempo. NICE!
the original is a good song...but this is fucking epic. they really went all out with their rendition of this song, and this is hands down the best performance of it on youtube. fucking love this.
Sorry you could not have been at "69"...so many wars, so many miles, so many roads...Dave brings his heart , his soul , his blood...my dear brother , what does 40 years do...Count the boots in country... " It's A Jimi Thing"...He would be proud..!
I just really wish that this time when the energy between everybody in the band was so flawless, that they had decided to jam this song for 10 minutes. But I can live with 4 and a half of the best minutes spent jamming All Along the Watchtower. Best version, no disrespect to Jimi fans.
its sad to see the music of legends slowly start to fade away from today's generation. There are a few of us though that continue to keep the dying flame alive.
@DegeratX I remember hearing a story about Dylan and dmb at Rock and Rio where he (Dylan) came up to Dave after the show and asked why he didn't play the song, cause even Bob F'n Dylan likes the way that he did it.
Great version. I like the Hendrix and Dylan versions too; they're all great, just different. Hendrix was a guitar player with few peers; Matthews doesn't match his ability on the guitar, but he's a better singer, and his backup band is very strong. Anyhow, it's a different, more intense, interpretation. Dylan deserves great credit for writing the song, and his understated delivery has its own charms, in my opinion.
I was there and it was my 18th birthday. I was about 200 feet back in the crowd off the right side facing the crowd. DMB were one of the best shows that weekend.
To the guy who said DMB does it better: Sorry, no. Not even close. Listen to Jimi again. I did, right after reading your comment. The King sits still there, upon his throne!
Dave mathew is awesome i dont like any OTHER versions of this song but MAN THIS IS GREAT and you got too love the drumer hes great plz GiVE THIS A THUMBS UP FOR DM!!
i had never heard daves verison before i just got here listening to bob and jimi.but i like it .he gives it a different treatment really enjoy this and i thought i would not when i clicked link.
Wasn't a big fan until I heard there live at Red Rocks album. Then went to a concert three years ago. One of the best concerts I've ever been to, if not the best. Looove this song live and DMB . Definitely a fan for life.
Have always loved Dave's cover of this song. They all really are just incredibly talented musicians. Getting excited for yet another great DMB album with Away From the World. Pre-ordered it yesterday!
I have been saying the exact same thing for a long, long time. To say you're right on (which you are) is simply agreeing w. myself. Keep spreading the objective message.
I like this comment: Dave is the man, made this song his own. After so many artists have covered this over time, he still finds a way to be original and make it his own.
I think Mr Zimmerman would appreciate the energy given to his song by this young gentleman. It's been years..."Love...the story of love is quicker than the wink of an eye the story of love is 'hello' and 'goodbye' until we meet again." Jimi Hendrix
@DTransform9 that is why i love the band, first off they are the most musicaly gifted band on tour. and dave has this soul in all of his songs, where you can tell his songs mean something, and if you ever hear him in an interview, you see he is down to earth and awkward, not untoutchable like other artists. dave is amazing, listen to the song "you might die trying, live at peidmont" if you like that type of music, that song will blow you away
Dave Matthews grabbed this song by the throat. The genius of Dylan's song is that it works as an acoustic ballad or a pounding, stomping rendition such as this.
I clicked on the advertised U2-version of this song (probably in the bar on your right)... needless to say I came back to watch the dmb-version a second time. And a third time also.
The fact that he survived this event shows how amazing of a musician he is!!
I think they were one of the afternoon headliners before it got crazy. But yeah Woodstock 99 was wild.
Cold chills every fucking time!!! Dave owned this! Seeing it live was one of the most amazing things of my life!
Check out watch tower in playing for change around the world.
Me too.
Everytime i see Dave I cross my fingers that they play this... just one more time
He always will…he’s good like that…he knows…he’s a good human
Goosebumps man!! Every time I listen to it
When I first saw this at the tender age of 14 in 2001, it hit me hard. It hasn't lost any of its magic since then. One of my all time favorites.✌🏼
I only say this once: I was there when this song was written. And I can tell you this: the version of Dave Matthews is the best ever. Very accurate
WAIT What? You were there when this song was written; again, WAIT What? (It's) Too bad this comment is eleven years old. It seems a good story of Bob writing while recovering has gotten away from us. 😞
Facts
You where next to Bob Dylan when he sat in his chamber and wrote this? Im having real trouble imagining that.
Best performance at Woodstock 99
there are so much cover-versions of great artists but THIS is the best i've ever heard!
Holy fuck this is an amazing cover. So much power!
Holy FUCK! How can you not like this and how can you not like Dave? This was incredible
I don't think a day won't be another like him. God don't make others the same with attributes the same. 1 of a kind forever ❤️
The way he finishes each note, it gives me chills.
I remember watching this when i was 12 on TV. i had never heard of the Dave matthews Band and i didnt know who sang the song originally. i didnt understand the words (i couldnt even make out half of them) but i was just mezmorised by the feeling the song induced in me.... great song.
Just take a look at his shirt, he's leaking gallons of passion and emotion. Top job.
From Missouri to Connecticut, he’s tops!

i don’t ever understand a word hes saying, but man am i grateful for his music
google the words, you'll be even more grateful.
kind of like the original? lol Bob Dylan is a hell of a writer, horrible singer
This is the best version of this song ever...Dave you are great
man really u said .........ever , ur older then me by at least 20 years......wich means u might have seen the real hendrix play this song. i love daves version but i just cant bring my self to say its better then the real hendrix's version.
google sucks major dick How about we just don't decide who made a better version? How about we just acknowledge both are brilliant?
In germany 2019, the Best Concert ever !! Greeting from Germoney
I've never been a DM fan but wow- they did an awesome job on this- great arrangement, awesome drummer & sax player- and Dave kinda stepped outside of himself for the growly vocals when they brought up the tempo. NICE!

after hendrix the best version, this particular version in woodstock, I ever heard of this song...
I heard this version first, when I found out this was Jimmy I was like omfg Dave gave the best respect to the man before him.
Agree!!
Agree
I personally like this more, tho Hendrix plays the music better, I think this is all around better
Neil Young...
'Nuf said.
PS
I was AT Woodstock.
I just really wish that this time when the energy between everybody in the band was so flawless, that they had decided to jam this song for 10 minutes. But I can live with 4 and a half of the best minutes spent jamming All Along the Watchtower. Best version, no disrespect to Jimi fans.
This I believe is cut down a bit because of TV but you can find the more “full” version on YT. It’s got a little 2-3 min jam.
I'm in fucking LOVE. Can't get a better artist singing a better song. CLASSIC.
Thats dude OWNS that bass...Rock on!!!
3:03 - 3:12
So much emotion from Dave. Goddamn this version is perfect.
There's no other way to tip your hat the Hendrix on one of the most prestigious venues on earth!
This is the best version of this song I've ever heard. DMB is a freaking amazing band
🤣🤣
its sad to see the music of legends slowly start to fade away from today's generation. There are a few of us though that continue to keep the dying flame alive.
ive probably watched this a thousand times since 2007
@DegeratX I remember hearing a story about Dylan and dmb at Rock and Rio where he (Dylan) came up to Dave after the show and asked why he didn't play the song, cause even Bob F'n Dylan likes the way that he did it.
does it not sound like stairway when the full band comes in?!
Sometimes the band goes into stairway
Yes, I think we all can agree on that fact. Thanks for reiterating that commonly known information in such eloquent fashion.
Just fantastic.... the feeling... the vocals.... the music.... the slow first verse and then they just ROCK!!!!
3:25
Guy's got maaaaad reflexes.
@CodyInColor Bob dylan would be like "Speed that shit up!"
A great song could never be ruined... and Dave gave it a whole new sound, I think it's a great cover... I loved it!
this is how i was introduced to dave matthews band...watching this on pay per view in 99... what a blessing! loved them ever since
Great version. I like the Hendrix and Dylan versions too; they're all great, just different. Wasn't a big fan until I heard there live at Red Rocks album. Then went to a concert three years ago. One of the best concerts I've ever been to, if not the best. Looove this song live and DMB . Definitely a fan for life.
great rhythm and powerful voice!!
This is a great song done well
This is a great song done well, yet again, with feeling and emotion and intensity!
Makes me miss the US big time. Used to live there and went to a couple DMB concerts back in the day. Best time of my life. :(
It just doesn't get any more awesome than that!
So so so so so so so so good. They need to come to England more often, I will pay any price and go anywhere (within the country)
Best band to play this song. Tight.
I like this comment:

One the BEST Dave Matthews performances ever.
I think Mr Zimmerman would appreciate the energy given to his song by this young gentleman. It's been years..."Love...the story of love is quicker than the wink of an eye
the story of love is 'hello' and 'goodbye'
until we meet again." Jimi Hendrix
99...badass year...
A guy gets it...in all this corporate madness...
This is amazing!!!!!!
what's awesome is that while Hendrix performed this at Stock 69, DMB did at WS 99, such a great homage
This is not true. Jimi Hendrix did not play this at Woodstock. However, it was played by its author, Bob Dylan, at Woodstock '94.
holy shit dave kills this. so much passion
same for me as well, never seen anything played with such passion and soul!
@DTransform9
that is why i love the band, first off they are the most musicaly gifted band on tour. and dave has this soul in all of his songs, where you can tell his songs mean something, and if you ever hear him in an interview, you see he is down to earth and awkward, not untoutchable like other artists. dave is amazing, listen to the song "you might die trying, live at peidmont" if you like that type of music, that song will blow you away

I was there. This song was EPIC
Fantastic best version.
Blows my mind every time
What a great observation. You're right, art is timeless.
@ThaDeliCreeps One of the most successful touring artists of all time... they are greatness
His voice is amazing...
excellent voice!!! great performance!!!
Wow what a fab version.
Dave Matthews grabbed this song by the throat. The genius of Dylan's song is that it works as an acoustic ballad or a pounding, stomping rendition such as this.
bloody brilliant.
this is SO good
Thank you.
amazing job.
Jesus what a great performance halleluja, thank god for people like this.
Great version, and the drummer is amazing
ive been away from the laptop for a few hours, and im havn serious withdrawals from not hearing dave matthews take on All Along the Watchtower
I clicked on the advertised U2-version of this song (probably in the bar on your right)... needless to say I came back to watch the dmb-version a second time. And a third time also.
Fantastic!!!!!!!:))
The BEST cover of this song ever!
New generation is missing out on this one too
