  • Google has been consolidating its AI efforts and power around one man: Demis Hassabis. As one of the most respected leaders in the space, the DeepMind co-founder has a track record of critical AI breakthroughs. But can an academic also pave the way for Google’s genAI commercialization and monetization? Hassabis is the key to Google’s lead in AI but his biggest challenge lies ahead. This week on TechCheck, the real test. Can Google and Hassabis show Wall Street, investors, and the public that it can turn AI into actual products?

Hassabis co-founded DeepMind in London, UK in 2010. It was acquired by Google in 2014, but is still based in London. Google's current London HQ is impressive (I've been there as my son-in-law heads up a Google division for EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa). Google is also building a new London HQ, under construction nearby, dubbed 'The Landscraper' as it is longer than the London Shard is tall, but is still 11 storey's high. It is nearing completion and will provide 80,819 square metres (869,828 square feet) of accommodation. It will be the first Google building outside of the US to be 100 percent owned and designed by the tech giant. Nevertheless, Google will retain its current already massive London HQ nearby.
A quote from a recent tech article addresses your point head on:- "It’s significant, notes Rohan Silva in a recent article, that although it is now part of Alphabet, the founding team did not relocate “because Demis [Hassabis] and his DeepMind colleagues were sure being in London gave them an edge over their competitors, they insisted they had to stay here, not move to California.” And since Demis Hassabis is tipped as Google's next CEO that doesn't look like changing anytime soon.

The narrative that Google "gave away the farm" with the "Attention is all you Need" paper ignores the fact that Deep Mind used improvements to the transformer model that Microsoft came up with to upgrade AlphaGo.

YT was invented around 2005 and Google bought it.
Having good products, but no real innovation since years.
They are just maintaining old products like UA-cam and Drive.
Altough i like those software i have criticism what could be better.
