I’ve had three of these and there is a fourth in the family. I’ve never owned another small car, but I always thought that the A2 is one of the best cars ever made and a special moment in automotive history that will never happen again - a premium small car built with premium materials, to a high spec, but cheap to maintain and run. It’s not a rebadged Polo or a carer mobile, like the A1, it’s a unique car that can carry four adults in comfort and style. The rear passenger leg room beats the 3 series/C-Class , for example. I only have two or three issues with the car - visibility is affected by the front pillar, it’s a pain to unlock the boot when the battery goes flat and due to the low weight (around 900kg), it’s not fun to drive it at high speed on open road in strong wind. Perhaps, the fifth gear could be longer. You could buy a new Polo with worst spec and less style or space today, twenty years later! They're both shit! The latest i3 isn't available with the petrol generator anymore, you just get more battery capacity. You also can't charge them from normal mains-well you can, but after 3 days charging, I only got 1 mile added to the range (possibly a fault, but shit nevertheless)
TT Minivan, loved that! We used to drive an AudiA2 in 2002, we used it as a small family car and what can I say...after 20 years I keep thinking of this car and am seriously considering it as my next purchase. I'm not a huge car person and don't know much, but this car was such a joy to drive, it was surprisingly spacious, and just a really well mannered, cute little guy. I'm here because I want to educate myself about cars, the Audi A2 in particular, in regards to what I should be looking for when buying a 15+ year old car.
@K Man The A2 is lighter and more aerodynamic than the Polo. And to be honest: i think 47 MPG is not very impressive for a Polo Bluemotion, should be above 50. Mine had the 1.4 16V gasoline engine and i managed to get around 45 mpg, normal driven and not hypermiling.
@K Man Biggest impact in any kind of economy driving is... driver. I can get anything form 6.2l/100 to 26l/100 in my car just by changing my driving style. I've driven cars in such a way that I went 2-2.5 l/100 below the owner's best... all above just driving, no bullshit dangerous techniques.
This has clearly had a LHD gearbox mod, very common for people who wanted an auto but couldn't get one. Instead you just get the passenger to change for you.
@@Onewheelordeal yeah I feel kind of dumb for believing that now, no excuses, but tbf there are cars where the brake pedal is also on the passenger side, so I guess a clutch pedal might be possible too idk.
My mate had two of these for his first and second car cause he loved them so much, blew up both gearboxes but we had such a blast in them, a awesome and massively under rated car
I love an A2! Came within a gnats snatch of buying one a few months ago but couldn't justify another motor. They're bargains and so innovative! Super safe too, a mate of mine had one 10 years ago and was t boned by a Mitsubishi Pajero doing 50, he ended up in a ditch upside down wrapped around a tree and bar whiplash he was fine!
They were already full swing sharing by that point, I do totally agree though that it was an entirely Audi venture, ive always had diesel audis, I bought an A2 recently, someone said they arnt real Audis so i explained in very boring detail that its actually the only true Audi to come out in many decades.
I've got that exact model in red. That traction control light you thought you saw is the brake disc wearing warning. If it's also on with the ABS then there's a wire to the front passenger side wheel which has broken, cutting off the pad and wheel speed sensors. Repair loom is available from Audi for about £55. Early A2 gearboxes are mostly made of toffee.
@@isaacrossonero3855 For different cars they use different seats and different materials, which means that some cars have a known standard issue with their seats (Peugeots for example rip at the seam for the side air bag quite often).
Yes you are right ,but still I regularly see stains like these on similar cars of the same era who have these type of seats (mostly German cars). Hence why I still think that this isn’t a specific problem with the A1 just a common problem with this kind of seat fabric used in many more cars.
Actually the problem with the United States is the big three Germans is supposed to be luxury not basic they tried to make a basic luxury but it failed because they cut too many corners
I got mine for 17 years now and my biggest repair was just under 800 euro most way under it. I have similar miles on it and the best thing is you don't think about rust at all. Which is so nice especially now when it's old.
Gearbox you need to reset the cables from the shifter. My moms has one with near 400k kms with a tune for 95bhp. Note: that 3cyl engine is pretty much the 1.9tdi you have on the high mileage A4 with a cylinder shaved off. If you can find the rare version with 4x4 (haldex) people have swapped the 1.4 for the 1.9. If you want to try and hit higher mpg drop a tune a the 6th gear (yes, its possible)
I'd actually be intrigued by how bad that gearbox really is by tearing it down completely and seeing the inside of it. Wouldn't be surprised to see the rebuilt value exceeding the cost of the A2 but hey ho it'd be interesting for us nerds at least.
Timico1000 bingo, my mums A2 has the same issue, feels like there’s no oil on the linkages but the issue is the gearbox turret bearing, the piece that the linkages pivot, just gets crusty and has bugger all lubrication, makes the gear changes feel like dog shit. Carthrottle if you’re reading this please do a how-to on changing the turret bearing so I can sort it out for my mum as a surprise 😂😂
Had the A2 1.2 TDI. It was frugal like nothing else (2.6...3.6 liter/100km), but it had some technical issues with the gearbox, the wheel bearings and the brake control unit. It was great to drive and quite roomy inside. Cool video, thanks!
I realy like this Audi because of a previous CarThrottle video, so CarThrottle sometimes gives me second opinions!! BTW: Alex hasn't said: "You mad bro!?" for a long time
@K Man I dont take their advice of buying cars for less than £200 beacuse: -I am 14 - I know when you buy a car for less than the that, the repair bill will be more the the actual car😂😂😂
Great car! I use the 1.2TDI (same as VW Lupo 3L) for my daily commute. Love the extra space and comfort, but the 20 litre tank only gives me ~560km (~350 miles).
Well it is a small light car with a small diesel engine.it's Best way to get good mpg. I had a L reg 1.5 diesel (Isuzu engine) Corsa I don't even remember having to put fuel in it was so rare maybe filled it twice
@@geemachine666 yes I did hear about that one didn't it have parts missing/carbon fibre parts too and some special wheels and tyres for aero dynamics and low rolling resistance. And was like £4k more than a normal one.
Love these cars. When I was a technician for Audi and serviced one of these the customer never informed us of gearbox issues. Went to put it into third and it went into first at about 40. Still never blew up
I love these cars. Living in Norway where they use salt on the roads in wintertime, the Aluminium chasis is a big plus. And it is such a big little car. (It doesn't feel small sitting inside it.)
I'm glad someone's finally saying good things about the A2. I love the little thing. It was my first ever car bought back in late 2015 with 108.000km and traded it back to a Toyota car dealer with 125.000km in 2017 (for a boring, very uncool Yaris Hybrid... yuck). I literally would drive just for the fun of being behind its steering wheel; the handling was TIGHT, the steering was precise and the throttle response was super fun (i had the 1.4l petrol version). Also, great interior and boot space in such a little package... miss the Audi A2! (Still keeping the original key in my keychain).
I bought one back in 2012: It was a 2003 with the 1.6 (110hp) and it had every conceivable option. Weighing in at just 995 kg this thing was so much fun to drive - and you always had hats turning at the (rather ridiculous) looks of it! Unfortunately, my A2 was totaled when some imbecile decided ignore a stop sign...
A2's are junk - literally. Many years ago i picked up parts at a VW dealer for my dad and the customer in front of me wanted spare parts for his A2. He didn't get them and the dealer told him the A2 in general has been sort of abandoned by VAG because you can't get a lot of spare parts at all. You HAVE to search ebay or junkyards. This was already 10 years ago. The other thing is the aluminium that almost tripples repair cost for common body repair jobs.
Please show much more about the A2, makes me happy to see it side by side with Jacks A4. Get the problems sorted out and i bet Jack will love the A2, could be the perfect car for his taste!
Loved my A2. Replaced stock wheels with some 17" rims and some nice rubber which gave it rather good handling. Only wished it had the 1.6 petrol instead of the 1.4 petrol and a bit more leg room since it didn't work for me when my hip got bad.
I've always thought the A2 was a decade too early! If you released it in 2010 with a few small styling tweaks it would have sold by the transporter load. An ex had one of the petrol ones and once you got past the looks it was a very, very capable car. It was so light that if you put the wiper on full speed the car would rock! Please fix the gearbox then see what it's like then, you can then do what you want with it.
This car was extremely expensive, it cost twice the price of an economy car with the same quality and features and weighted the same. In 2010 they would have failed exactly as they did back then. They say it was ahead of its time, but I'd like to know why: the aluminium body? Small aluminium cars existed even in the 50s and 60s. The 1.4 TDI? It's a junk engine. So why do you consider it ahead of its time?
Anybody who's bashing on the A2 does that purely on looks. Feel free to do that. I can tell you however that it is such a pleasure to own one. It's practical, it's cheap to drive, it could be a little better on fuel economy, it's spacious and well built. And because of the low weight it handles quite ok...
We had a very similar 74bhp A2 for two years and it was a genuinely great long term ownership proposition - economical, comfortable and they eat up the miles very well. They are also good fun to sling down a back road, mostly because they're small enough and narrow enough to place accurately on small roads. Strongly recommend new springs and dampers and to change those awful 16" wheels for some 15" rims and 195/50 R15 boots
The styling was odd for twenty years ago. These days they're not particularly out of the ordinary. The A1 on the other hand reminds me of an Austin Allegro...
I had an A2TDI on loan back in the day and loved it. From 30-70 it was really nippy but then the acceleration dropped off a cliff. No better on fuel though than my 1.9 TDI A3. That engine is the best Diesel engine ever for efficiency and reliability
I didn’t know the a2 was hated. I actually like it. Efficient, quirky, comfortable, rare, cheap, good to drive, premium interior. Some say it’s a future classic

@K Man Yes and no. The engineers at Audi clearly did not design the car in consideration of the second/later owner. In order to fix it properly, you got to remove the front bumper, intercooler, take the transmission/engine completely out, replace the rusty drum brakes, change the whole suspension and even route a whole new wiring if the previous owner wasnt too thoughtful. But once you did that - and your interior doesnt look like s*** as in the one in the video above - you have a damm cool little car at your hands. But if you dont like the car or its design at all - .....
Not my cup of tea but they have plenty to offer lol, economic, fairly spacious, the way the bonnet works makes them a doddle to work on, fairly punchy etc. They have their value
Finally, car throttle reviewing the perfect Audi football mom car. German engineering at its finest! But is it just me, or does the rear end look a lot like a Prius?
I had a Skoda Fabia courtesy car with the 1.4 TDI, and yes it felt like it was fuelled with gravel but it was indeed surprisingly torquey and also it actually sounded pretty good compared to the 4 pot 1.9. I can see why they get such high mpg because you really can just keep the revs and throttle inputs low

The A2 was actually a great car, i had mine for about 10 years and over 250.000 Kilometers. One of the most underrated cars of the last 30 years...
K Man i can reach 4l/100km or even bellow with careful driving on a tuned 2.0d
I love this car!
@@hojnikb my 2.0 gets under 4l/100km without any tune, just careful driving (2018 octavia)

Literally the last genuinely innovative Audi before they just started full on VAG platform sharing.
They were already full swing sharing by that point, I do totally agree though that it was an entirely Audi venture, ive always had diesel audis, I bought an A2 recently, someone said they arnt real Audis so i explained in very boring detail that its actually the only true Audi to come out in many decades.
Can't beat a bit of VAG sharing 👍
Do you know if its the same engine used in the mk5 golf sdi
Highly engineered innovative car, extremely streamline and they lost money on everyone sold!
kenneth No. SDI is a non turbo 1.9 whereas this is a turbo 1.4.
Owner: Stains were there when I bought it.
Alex: Ew, look at those seat stains.
Owner: *Gets defensive*
Those are totally his stains. lol
I've seen other A2 with the same kind of stains, seems it's a standard issue for them.
What does it have to do with the type of car, it’s just a normal seat.
@@isaacrossonero3855 not really. My golf mk4 has similar seats and they literally start looking like that after just a couple of rain drops on them.

I had the same engine for my first car and it was still going strong at 212k, handled brilliantly too
Yea I think the a2 looks better than most ugly cars
I bought one back in 2012: It was a 2003 with the 1.6 (110hp) and it had every conceivable option. Weighing in at just 995 kg this thing was so much fun to drive - and you always had hats turning at the (rather ridiculous) looks of it! Unfortunately, my A2 was totaled when some imbecile decided ignore a stop sign...
Utter bollocks you lot talk. That 3pots done by 140k and down at 50bhp if its not blown... the gearbox is chocolate and they get constant brake issues
When Alex held the camera everything was so much more tall.😂
A2's are junk - literally. Many years ago i picked up parts at a VW dealer for my dad and the customer in front of me wanted spare parts for his A2. He didn't get them and the dealer told him the A2 in general has been sort of abandoned by VAG because you can't get a lot of spare parts at all. You HAVE to search ebay or junkyards. This was already 10 years ago. The other thing is the aluminium that almost tripples repair cost for common body repair jobs.
Bought one 5 years ago, great little car, and a lot of fun.
A bit of a cult car that will be sought after one day.

Loved my A2. Replaced stock wheels with some 17" rims and some nice rubber which gave it rather good handling. Only wished it had the 1.6 petrol instead of the 1.4 petrol and a bit more leg room since it didn't work for me when my hip got bad.
Make a collection of pre-2010 Audi lineup(s).
For 40k, buying an A2 was just stupid lmao. An economy car for stupid ppl. If you really did care for the economy, then you'd take public transit.
