    All this time I just thought open baffle speakers sounded good but I was wrong. Being a poor I’m just predisposed to liking them😂

    Every speaker design is a give and take. Some OBs don't have enough bass. They can be hard to place for optimum sound. Many have a low WAF (wife approval factor).
    On the other hand, they're usually amazingly efficient and can be driven by low-power tube equipment. They throw a wide and deep soundstage. While deep bass may be lacking, acoustic instruments like drums, string basses, and brass have great speed and impact.
    Buy speakers that are good at reproducing music you like. If you like metal or dance music, OBs probably aren't for you. If you like classical, folk, jazz or other acoustic music, OBs might amaze you.

    I think the absolute best Star Trek episodes are the ferengi episodes in Deep Space 9... :) Back to open baffles ... I have heard many, and built a few. Definitively totally different flavor of sound. My best OB were the ones with Zenith 12in alnico woofers run full range (plus Zenith alnico tweeter with 1st order xover, just a single cap). Driven by my 6005 SE amp (same power tube as AN OTO) they made a magical combination, and played Led Zeppelin and King Crimson like I never heard before. Absolutely totally going to 11! Best rock concerts I ever had, with the electric guitars literally exploding to life. Immense levels of dynamics and immediate punch. However, they did not work as well for classical music... ; ) I wish I still had them. The woofers got poked through.... ouch, and then I moved a couple times and had to say goodbye to the big panels. LOL, I agree that they are not really wife friendly... she poked through BOTH woofers... not on purpose, though.

    Voyager is the best Trek, imo. Especially with the introduction of 7 of 9 At end of season 3. TOS is from a much different Era and has special place in Boomer Trekkie’s hearts.

    I wonder how concentric speakers would sound in open baffle....Concentric still floats my boat most.
    Big speakers are great for those huge orchestral recordings, so you can actually feel the space, but the bigger the speakers , the more, things like vocals don't match up to the real world. Also it's the 'fakery' of the recording studio's.
    Isolated vocals sound great , but are NOT a representation of a band playing live. Real live recordings should be done with two mics for the whole band, preferably in one take. But engineers just have to fake it , they lost the skillsets for that, no matter how expensive their gear is. Or they're scared to do it if you have like 200 mics available. Why do old Beatle albums sound excactly like you're in the studio with them? because it recorded that way, right? But then you get in the 'artform' argument ....
    Moral of the story , proper speaker setup takes time, proper recording takes time, within it's limitations. It takes me about two hours to set up my speakers, but man is it worth the time!. So take your time with any speaker system to set it up. One should be able to walk 'around' the sound if set up correct. That magic bubble appears and the whole room livens up. Use a friend to help you, cuts the time in half.
    In my experience , big sound= fat cables (bigger conductors)

      Why can't you use them in small rooms? I heard they're great for near field listening

    • @cybernaab
      @cybernaab 2 роки тому +1

      @@el34glo59 because the room is the speaker box , and you need to have them rather far away from the walls (also the side walls) to have a deep rich sound instead of thinny and weak

    Define good. Because £500 elacs are really really good. For what they are and for the price. So saying that something has to be 100,000+ personally I would assume that it's better than a good elac. I mean yes it's a personal opinion. Bit not layed out very good. It all depends on what you want. I have an open baffle sub. 30hz roll off and have not heard a better box design. For twice or even 3 times the money

    • @RealHIFIHelp
      @RealHIFIHelp  2 роки тому +1

      Yes I like the sound and think it is a higher end sound.
      Still not super value and still a very long away from the very best ones.
      But a very competent brand a lot like ATC and Monitor Audio.

    You did not hear a well-made open baffle, Spatial audio designs, Clayton Shaw, I have been in this hobby for 40 years and they sound better than many I've owned and love Electrostatic ESL Quad speakers these are the only speakers I could live with. But to each his own, but what you're saying does not match what I hear in my home. You also talk of 50K speakers, really, this opinion makes no sense to me because it does not match what I've heard, my one audiophile friend said when he heard them these make music sound like a direct mic feed of the performance. Classical music comes alive as well as blues, pop, rock, etc. They sound as good as your room and gear and that is what a good speaker should be able to perform for you.

      Music recording studios have interior and working style very different snd not OB centric most use nearfield and 2 or 3 way compact Also close to the wall
      They can’t give 3-5 Ft breathing space
      Also they need active. OB if implemented well is outstanding
      Driver config is key. Not all drivers work great

      You have to mix the music to suit what it will be played on ie box speakers are the norm

      No itś very simple, Open Baffle spread a wide signal that is very general with a lack of detail. That means that you don´t get a lot of concentration of detail going inward towards the speaker and back of it (in terms of imaging)
      And some like that. But I still feel that Open Baffle is a lower end design in general, simply because you lose proper bass proper coupling and proper concentration of detail, by blurting a signal out wide in the room.
      Magico does the exact opposite, and yes that can make a sound a lot more bright/sterile.
      But then the solution is to then create more money to buy them, and develop the skills to then taming those types of speakers.
      Open Baffle is a lot like a Magnapan speaker, does some few things that are very nice, but is usually stuck in the lower gears of sound.
