    I have been thinking about this guitars since Andertons sent an email a few weeks ago. Thanks for biting the bullet for us. The look is spot on. A lot of great features that justifies its existence in the current market. To me it seems like the pickups are a throw away for me, don’t like the hot and dark com o on guitars, maybe coffee and… let’s not go there. 😅 I really want the Tom Anderson drop top style they do in Indonesia with EMG SA 😊

    • @stevecassidyguitar
      @stevecassidyguitar  7 місяців тому

      I reckon Andertons will get more models in - in future. If these sell well - which I reckon they will.
      I think this is an attempt to compete with the HB Fusion stuff for pricepoint and specs.

    Hey Steve, Spot on review. Love your humour also!
    I've got one myself and had it for about a month or two now, but noticed something alarming glaring. They seemed to have used some sort of lacquer/tint on the neck - I've got drips of the lacquer where the neck meets the body on the finder board! Does beg the question of how this is actually roasted, as any small scratch to the neck shows a bright white wood underneath - which on other roasted maple necks I have would never actually happen.
    Otherwise this guitar is awesome and the stainless steel frets are a new favourite spec to have in my guitars :)

    Looks awesome, the pics on Andertons don't do it justice. Not sure about the hot pups. Humbucker sounded horrific, sounded good split. Based on the fact I would be swapping the pups, I would go for a Jet js-400. Also, I've never understand people who complain about the weight of guitars. A few weeks of standing up playing and your muscles would adjust to the new weight. It's not as if we are talking about going from a weight difference of 7lbs to 37lbs 😂😂😂. If I was buying a stype for 300 and not wanting to mod it. I would go for a Vintage V6, brilliant guitars and if you like vintage sounding pups the Wilkinson single coils are brilliant, especially the neck pup. Can't wait for the rant video. I wouldn't go by the Andertons demo as they were playing them threw about £3000's worth of amp/cab/pedals. Very interesting video pal 🤔🤔 think I will wait until we actually have a clue about the specs on Andertons. Another great review mate 👏. Love the finish and the specs. Looks great. Awesome colour. I have been curious bout these for a while now. But I agree with you on the weight. It’s a deal breaker for me also - especially on an S type guitar. Anything over 8lbs is Les Paul territory imo. And tbh it’s the only negative about my 25th Anniversary Harley Benton S type (almost the same weight as this by the sounds) and the main reason why the Jet’s get played more live (even though the HB sounds better 🤷‍♂️) it’s that big a deal.

    Hi Steve, It's certainly an interesting guitar with Andertons joining the sub £350 guitar world . What is the advantage of Steel frets versus the usual nickel silver, I guess they would last a lot longer but not as easy to work on? Have a good Xmas

    • @stevecassidyguitar
      @stevecassidyguitar  7 місяців тому

      This is a great question and very relevant to this specific guitar 😀.... You're spot on about the Stainless Steel frets - they "should be... and usually" are more durable, you shouldn't ever need a fret level or refret, and yes the accepted common wisdom is that working on them will wear out your tools quicker, which is why it's so important to have them done right in the first place. I currently have a 2nd Soloking here (the replacement to this first one) and the fret ends are not great, quite a lot of sharp fret ends and snagging.
      Anyway.. the benefit for me is... my first experience with Stainless Stell frets (that I know of) was on the Harley Benton Fusion, and to me - they just felt super smooth and bends felt more... effortless. So basically the other advantage is feel - you'd really have to try one and see if you feel it too - you might not 🤷‍♂️
      Hope that helps 😀

    Great video Steve, it’s a superb looking guitar and I might be in the market for one but I totally agree with you, it’s too heavy for a Strat style guitar., I don’t keep anything weighing over 8lbs. It will be interesting to see if Anderton’s can supply you with one that is sub 8lb. For me the sound of those pickups isn’t what I would be looking for but I always tend to replace the pickups in guitars in this price range. It’s interesting that you ask “who these Soloking guitars would be for?” I have high end guitars Suhr etc and custom builds but I also tend to buy lower price guitars like Harley Benton and mod them.

Potentially they tick a lot of boxes for me, HSS with Babicz bridges, roasted maple necks, 22 steel frets with rounded fret ends and Tesla pickups (which I would almost certainly replace). I was told if I then didn’t want the guitar the £50 was non-refundable but they would put it down as store credit! I said no thanks and didn’t bother. I thought the big retailers were all just a bit delirious from the COVID guitar sales boom and they were profiteering on the back of it. Judging by your Anderton’s experience it looks like it’s still going on / has become standard practice.
      Thanks for the ‘heads up’ on the Harley Benton ST Pro 12-16” compound fretboard radius. For some reason I thought they were going to have a 9.5-12” compound radius. 12-16” would be no good for me either I sold a Charvel pro mod DNKY earlier this year with a 12-16”” compound radius, I play with my thumb over the top of the neck a lot so it was far too flat for me and I absolutely did not get on with it.

It's really hard to beat the spec list on the SoloKing, but the pickups are very dark sounding. I would imagine "most" people would want to change them so that's another cost to consider. Also I had 6 SoloKings weighed from Andertons, the were all 8lbs and over. So quite heavey for S types and something else to consider.

      Re the Squier CV it depends whether you're talking about quality or Specs.
      If it's Strat or Tele - For similar specs - I'd go Jet JT300 or Jet JS 300. Jet Quality is better than Squier & Fender at the moment imo (except for the tuners - you can upgrade these for a Vanson locking set for £30 10min easy install).
      If it's just in terms of quality and your not too concerned about getting similar spec as CV - I'd go Jet JS400, it's an HSS strat, really nice rounded neck heel, impressive 2 point trem. (Same as above Re tuners).
      The Jets are around £160 - £200. The higher end Fazleys are good (Sunrise series)
      Earts are great but more expensive these days £350 -£400ish
      Harley Benton ST 25th is unbelievably specced for around £255.

    If they advertised it as a 12" radius and you bought it in good faith based on that, and it's actually a 10" (or so), shouldn't you be able to get a free return and refund?

    • @stevecassidyguitar
      @stevecassidyguitar  7 місяців тому

      My mate did exactly that - He ordered expecting 12" and when we found out it was 9.5" he returned for a full refund.
      For me - I was exchanging because of the weight not the radius, I actually prefer 9.5" so it worked out better for me. I suppose I could have used that reason to save the £20 but that would have felt a bit too dishonest... and I don't think they would have weighed another one.
      I'm not actually sure what the £20 fee is for - whether it's for the exchange, the weighing and exchange or just the weighing - it was never explained fully🤷‍♂

      @@Cpmnk Very interesting! 🤔 Thanks for sharing mate - where did you get this info pray tell?
      Personally I thought the specs didn't match the 182 thing they were going for anyway. The highly figured roasted maple neck, compound radius and SS frets seemed a wee bit OTT for a Delonge style thing. But that's just my silly little opinion.
      I hope they're changing the ST modern to 9.5" to 12" Compound radius instead of 12" - 16" too 😜

      I didn't know it was gonna be heavy until i go it in my hands. But the main reason I got it is it's the only 9.5" radius fretboard guitar on the market with stainless steel frets under £1k (that I know of).

    you WONT get your £20 back . I love Andertons channel but i felt a little let down from my experience . I went to order an audio interface and because my information on their database didnt have my house number they couldnt ship it out to me so instead of contacting me and asking they just left me in limbo for a week until I had to contact them when it didnt arrive . When I asked them to ship it out to my address they wanted another £20 because it had been shipped in their eyes even though it was just sat at the distribution centre , when i said I think thats unreasonable I just asked poitely for a refund they told me they CANNOT issue a refund unless and this is company policy that I pay a fee of £20 . If it had of been shipped and returned I could understand but I still find this Unacceptable . I suggested in future that they implement a change where they cannot take a customers money unless they have all the relevant details so it wouldnt happen again . Im a bit dissapointed how it was dealt with to be honest as i bought a boss katana and boss waza earphones before all this with no problems . Ive never EVER heard of having to pay to release a customers refund just so people are aware. Im not shitting on Andertons I still love them they just need to look at this problem .

      This isn't surprising to me at all. I'm the same as you - I love the Andertons channel and vids etc, but they need to pay more attention to the day to day running of operations. Poor communication, and very little to no attention to detail. My experience with them has been 50/50, in about 6 transactions total - which is pretty terrible imo

    Hmm not sure what to make of this one, the neck is not for me or the pickups, they sounded muddy and harsh
    a bit like Harley Benton Roswells, and they belong in the bin!
    It has some plus points but too many negatives, the aged plastic knobs and switch tip look terrible to my eyes.
    It could easily be upgraded into to a decent guitar, but is it worth the hassle?
    Sorry Steve but compared to Eart and Harley Benton Fusions this one is not in the same league.

      I hear ya! This is my thoughts exactly, I'd have to change the pickguard - immediately! 😂 Probably White pearloid like they put on almost every other finish of this guitar model 🤷‍♂️. Would defo change the pickups. Other than not the best fret ends I think the build quality is easily up there with the Eart and Fusions. The D neck profile surprised me - it doesn't feel too far away from what I usually like 🤔 But the weight is the dealbreaker 😬

      So near, yet sofar from an ideal guitar, a heavy one is not pleasant to play when your neck and shoulders
      start to ache after one song!
      Try playing a Burns guitar, the Hank Marvin i have weights a ton, way heavier than any Fender Strat.

    Purely subjective opinion Steve-O. It sounds terrible. And that's after removing the protective strip. Color is awful too. Send it back at least this way you don't have to go out and find purple colored glasses!!! Wouldn't buy a thing from Andertons. Their videos are unwatchable. I'd have to agree - these might be my least favourite pickups I've ever tried 😬
      Even though it wasn't an ideal audio recording - there was barely a trace of any "strattyness".
      I think I would like the colour if it had a white pearloid pickguard... But then... I'm a big Prince fan so maybe that's why 😜
      The pickups I would change if I liked everything else. But It was too heavy. I returned it for a replacement.... And that was heavier 🙈
