Anyone who has visited Malaysia will understand how much pride the Malaysians take in their national brand. In the era that this car was made they were more or less Mitsubishi cars, but they bought Lotus and developed the twin cam engines into the Campro engines, I had a 2011 Proton in 2013 and it was amazing.
I knew a Malaysian fella who bought one of these when they first came out. A neighbour of his criticised the car, so he beat him to death. His family stored the car for 20 years until he was released from prison and he got it going within half an hour and still drives it to this day.

Used it for the next few years and never had a problem. I live in Spain and we bought it as it was a LHD, however it was the only LHD sold in the UK from new with UK specs from a Proton dealer. It turns out the guy worked for Proton and had many of their cars over the years, he also had a holiday home here in Spain (literally round the corner from us!). My ex had a 1.5 Persona ( in red, obviously 😉 ) on an M plate, 22 years ago. That buzzer sounds like the drone of bagpipes before the tune starts! Do have one funny memory of these Protons. Back in 2004 I managed to park my Sierra into a ditch in the back end of nowhere (on the Whisky Run, if you know the Isle of Man) with no phone and 2 dogs. Reached the "main" road and tried to thumb a lift with no success until elderly ladies appeared in one of these MPI's, flat out maybe 30 mph.. The two utterly lovely occupants asked if I was a church goer and suggested that I see the then new film "The Passion of the Christ" - they were totally unfazed by the dogs, all creatures great and small, I guess. Despite their polite offer of a lift home I politely asked they drop me at the phone box in the nearest village. Any time I see one of these cars I remember them. As a postscript, as I was about to get into the phone box when a breakdown truck drove by which duly stopped to help, bit of extra cash & a laugh at how the hell I'd reached where I had. Nice uplifting video guys, all the best to Steph with her new wheels.

A real selling point was that many of them came with air conditioning which was unheard of in budget cars at the time. In the UK Proton did a better job of selling that shape Lancer than Mitsubishi did.
The Proton connection started with incorporation into UK Lada dealers as an additional franchise, then when Lada pulled out, became dominant for several years then mysteriously pulled out of the UK and European markets, like other marques we have lost and are losing i.e. Daihatsu and currently Mitsubishi who are in the process of pulling out of the UK and Europe but sticking to other parts of the world.

Proton is my 1st car that i bought, this machine absolutely awesome, till now I still have model Proton with my family’s.What a great car 👍👏😊
Thank goodness someone had the insight to stop it from being scrapped and pass it on to someone who can enjoy it! I can never understand the mentality of wanting to scrap vehicles just because they're old, even when they're in mint condition, as there will always be someone out there who will want it.
To put the mileage into perspective, that car did about 10,000 miles over 17 years, and I just put 10,000 miles on my Peugeot Expert in the last 7 months.
Thank you guys in the comment section for sharing ur memories with our Malaysian’s pride Proton Saga. As a Malaysian myself, i am moved by the stories 😭👌🏻
What a great find 👍 unbelievable that it all works after all this time, its a credit to the last owner. Will look forward to seeing more about with Steph.
You right my lady...im so jealous.. This my childhood car.. When my father bought this car...we travel over the malaysia with this car.. So much memory...
The Protons were based on the Mitsubishi Lancers of the late 1980’s. Almost identical interior of my 1988 Lancer Estate. What an amazing car. It’s as good as new.
Absolutely love the enthusiasm for such a find. As a Malaysian I’m so proud.
Really fantastic, Matt. It is great to see that car going to Stef. She will be a terrific steward of the old beauty.
Wow! What a stunning find ! With a good clean & service its the perfect classic. 👍👍👍
Oh my, what an immaculate car for its year. My mom 1989 Saga Aeroback still alive with its original cloth seat hidden under the age PU leather with 500k++ km mileage.
Still going strong and alive.
Owner ni beruntung kerana memiliki kereta yang masih cantik dan dihargai di malaysia.u are Lucky
She's very lucky, I wish Id kept it
Great video Matt, I saw Steph's first. What a find! Nice collaboration with the three of you.
Im one of Sale Advisor from Proton Malaysia...im so happy 😁😊 to see and felt so proud you bring up old school Proton model as your content..it was amazing that car perfectly good and well being maintain💪👍💪..
anyway how much you bought it
What a magical video, so much positivity and good vibes. Love to see how this turns out when tidied up and MOT'd. Thanks for putting this video together.
Reliable car and pretty easy to maintain. Well done gentlemen...keep on looking for more hidden diamond!
My Triumph doesn't start that easily after being left for 10 minutes let alone 10 years!!
Oh wow! Great find!
Any chance you could borrow it from Steph to do a bit of a review feature on it?
Car is an absolute credit to its previous owner. I’m sure he would be happy to know his pride and joy will be looked after by Steph.
Best wishes from the Wirral.
What a great video and Collab, I can see Steph gaining a lot of new followers from Malaysia, reminds me of my grandad's neighbours Proton like this in the same colour. Epic find Matt and Steph and wow I cannot beleive I heard Steph Swear!
I wish I'd watched this sooner, so much positive energy! I was surprised how easily it fired up too.
Wow!! Awesome find! Used to have one of my own back in 2002. A 1.3 carburetor Hatchback version. Really loved it. Congrats guys! 😁👏👍
Bukan Aeroback ke?
@@edmund55144 Betul2.. Lama dh jual smpi lupa. Takut diorg tak faham plak Aeroback tu apa kan.. 🤭
my mom used to own a Saga Iswara. This car are all over on Malaysia road that time and even now with the new Proton Saga.. Really brought back all the memories... Thank you for making this machine alive again
Nice uplifting video guys, all the best to Steph with her new wheels.
actually the buzzer is telling the owner "change the battery now dude or I won't start" it is actually a "feature" of proton cars back then.
This Proton Saga is So Amazing
Great stuff Matt, thoroughly enjoyed and looking forward to seeing it (and Steph) in the future on the show scene.
Wow, glad you that I found this video. Being a Malaysian, I feel much appreciated and nostalgic for this find. I drive a Proton too here before being sold to another owner. Was happy to see even Proton made an appearance on one of Mr. Bean's episode. All this thank to our former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammed for rolling out the Malaysian car industry during his Premiership.
I watched Steph's video already but I missed the bit where she was the one buying it.
Credit to the late former owner. He's made sure it was 'decay proofed' as much as possible.
I would love to own one of these.
I,as a malaysia, am proud because my country's PROTON ISWARA car is in your country.....greeting's from malaysia🥰🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾
Great find indeed so clean and tidy
You guys in the comment section made my day. It's a very nice barn find and to see a lot of people appreciate it, it's wonderful. Even in Malaysia, it's hard to find this model (Proton Iswara / Saga) as good as this car. Thumbs up 👍🏻
The Protons when new always seemed to be owned by older drivers , but they were such a leap forward from the Lada & Yugo’s that the same consumer base had been buying a few shorts years before .
glad it didnt end up in the scrapyard. 😂 Glad there are people that actually saw the value of this piece of metal. love it, cant wait for the next update.!
You’re with the delightful Steph!! And what a great find (you’ll make Mr Hubnut very jealous) great video as always Matt!
I'm so happy to see a Proton Saga and I'm a Malaysian so proud of it🤩
Magnificent! & what a credit to the previous owner. Everyone loves a barn find, thanks Matt and hope you can do more of them.
Bangga nya aku sbgai rakyat Malaysia org luar mghargai sebuah kenderaan jenama Proton dengan pnuh emosi yg teruja n ikhlas memberi penerangan.. walaupun sbuah jenama yg tidak se gah jenama besar lain namun msih ada yg mghrgai nilai nya.. sayu jer hati nie..😭☺️
That's brilliant. Love Protons
So happy to watch this..🥰
Bought my first proton wira limited edition in 2004. Its engine submerged under big flood in 2014 but got repaired and we are using it till now. Im proud of my wira..😁
What a testament to the build quality of those Protons!
No. The storage quality of the owner.
@@kamrankhan-lj1ng And that too.
I love to watch next video..after wash and restore some part..👍👍👍
What a find ……. Will make a great project once cleaned up, and given a proper health check…..👍
Can't wait for the next episode ya 😍 When I was studying in the UK. Used to see some people in 🇬🇧 driving Proton cars. Whenever I see Proton cars on street, I sure missing my country very much. 🙂
Myself also own one of the older model than this which is 30 years of age this year. Still running good even for long distance.
Blimey, I thought my 29k miles Triumph Acclaim (found in similar circumstances) was something special. This is something else. What a great find.
What a great little car. There was never a doubt that that engine would kick into life without any fuss, Mitsubishi engines have always been amongst the finest ever made for reliability.
hmm did they simply just plant their shell on top of reliable japanese hardware?
Fantastic find Matt, Steph is one lucky person 😎
Excellent find, and brilliant to see Steph!
I recall that the standard-fit Blaupunkt stereo was a big attraction when Protons were first introduced here, as many 'budget' cars didn't have any audio equipment at all.
All Malaysian Domestic Models came with AC as standard.Well it is hot here. Tropical. Power steering was optional.
I own a Proton Impian/Waja. Its 2007 with lovely embossed leather trim. Its been totally reliable, brilliant little cars.
Wow what a find, Matt! And great to see it going to a great home ❤️👍
It is amazing! Steph is very lucky to have it
@SolidDash:v become a channel member and you will get it too 😉👍
I got this one to.. Same years 1993 still. Smooth running.. Glad to see this
Fantastic find. So is Steph going to be keeping this? Great seeing you and Steph collaborating as I love both your channels
yes, follow its revival on here channel now
@@furiousdriving By the way still can’t bel that after all the hard work you put in, that you didn’t keep that Rover 200 convertible. You did such an amazing job on it. Whoever bought that is extremely lucky
@@andygreen1a no ones been lucky yet, its still available..does need to go ASAP now though..
@@furiousdriving I wish I could buy it, but circumstances won’t allow. You did such an amazing job on it. I wouldn’t be able to to let it go if I were you after all that hard work
Congratulations Steff and well played Matt!
My father was interested in one of these. I think the under floor sealant was from factory. It one of their selling points. A new thing at the time.
Wow, that was a real selling point if it was
A real selling point was that many of them came with air conditioning which was unheard of in budget cars at the time. In the UK Proton did a better job of selling that shape Lancer than Mitsubishi did.
What a lovely old Proton proud of it. . Congratulations for having it. ❤️❤️❤️ From🇲🇾
The Proton connection started with incorporation into UK Lada dealers as an additional franchise, then when Lada pulled out, became dominant for several years then mysteriously pulled out of the UK and European markets, like other marques we have lost and are losing i.e. Daihatsu and currently Mitsubishi who are in the process of pulling out of the UK and Europe but sticking to other parts of the world.
These firms are insane to pull out of Britain!
Most enjoyable experience I have had in a very long time, this is how real car enthusiasts looks alike , thank you so much for sharing this great episode.I highly assure you these "old" cars are very highly regarded from folk like us, keep your mission up of bringing these cars alive and running.
A great find, in the 90's the local Humberside Police force had a couple of these as "Under cover" cars and one was gold........as Proton's were fairly rare around here, you knew who they were, when you spotted them about.
As malaysian...im so happy to see this proton still at good condition even as is far away from his hometown...❤❤❤❤...tq for a ggod review.
Fun fact, Malaysian version of GL uses stalks instead of the knobs. Most Malaysian source the UK dash to modify their GLs.
What's stalks?
The indicator/wiper/lights stalk
@@M_H_H wiper and light switch. we have sticks UK version uses knobs and the dashboard is a little bit different.
I absolutely love the patriotism of Malaysian folks in the comment section and the love for the brand
This video was propped out of other furious videos solely by Malaysians!
