  • After Marcus received a high-security wire-secured delivery from a watch brand, his spidey senses tingled. He invited Zach to watch him open the package and discover and explore what was inside. And when the wire was clipped they were surprised to see not one, but two boxes within that held a diverse roster of nine watches from high-end independent watchmaker Laurent Ferrier - an astounding $680,000 worth.
While Marcus had encountered Laurent Ferrier before on the wrist of Monochrome founder Frank Geelen, smitten by the Sport Auto on his wrist, he did not necessarily have the full low-down on the brand. So he was glad he phoned a friend and dived further into the background and watches of Laurent Ferrier with Time+Tide Editor Zach Blass.

I would take No.5 Classic Micro rotor in a second. Just saw it in person few weeks ago and what a beauty! The aesthetics, fit on the wrist and the technically advanced also artisanally finished movement. It's totally comparable to my lifetime favorite Eichi II.

As an Eichi II owner I support this statement 💪 - Z

Now that is a GREAT choice. Such a timeless beauty. but that movement. Holy smokes!

Those tourbillon watches are "the diamonds are on the inside" kind of piece of magic just for your own knowledge and admiration. Legendary watches.

It was easy to see how genuinely enamoured Marcus was with the sport auto, it went straight on the wrist and stayed there for most of the video. I can't blame him either. Love the cushion-y case, love the simplicity of the dial, just a very clean piece.
Zach raises a good point about price versus value versus worth. What's really important is the price the market will bear, not your opinion on what something "should" cost.
My choice is #3, the blue moon classic, for two reasons. Firstly I love a moonphase, and this one looks gorgeous with the classic double date windows, and second because I think Marcus would beat me to grabbing the sport auto 😁

@@timeandtidetribe It’s a matter of taste, of course, but my personal focus would have been on the two rose gold models, which, to me, are quintessential.

This is a great video. Thanks so much guys. I would love to have No.9 but I don't think my wrist could cope so would go for 8 and 6 as a dress watch to complement it. They are all extraordinary though so you can send me any of them, thanks

Marcus that green dial one on your wrist was absolutely stunning towards the end the end of the video. That with the sport as a two watch….
    Wowza 🔥🔥
And then an Ingeniuer as the third “beater” watch 😂
    I’m sure it’ll happen one day 👊🏽🤞🏽
As for the Q: Alongside the Sport Auto, for me #3.

Yeah I somhow thik the Ingenuer will be on the cards for me also. The titanium especially. I love the black outlines around the indicies on the dial. And the dark lustre of the titanium. just so many things about it that says yes to me. Hmmmmm. Hey thanks of rthe comments. Glad it hit the spot for you. And great choices you have there for sure!

I wouldn't buy a watch (or any other item for that matter) if the price was far out of line with similar items, or if it wasn't worth the sum of its parts. There is always some wiggle room for pop cultural significance (looking at you, Rolex) or amazing marketing. But before a watch is even considered, it has to pass the "common sense" test (common sense in the world of luxury watches is a stretch, i know).
I'm really curious to see how JLC, for example, will do in the next few years in terms of their enormous price hikes. 11,000 for a 3-hand mono Reverso that has no high horology or much hand finishing is a steep price to pay. I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in this. There's a reason why the $15,000 Fifty Fathoms, a 15mm 3-hand beast, is not a popular watch, despite its great, widely known historical significance. There is no reason for it's enormous size at this price despite lazy craftsmanship.

    • @marcusflack1523
      @marcusflack1523 Місяць тому +1

Now I like that answer. Super well thought through and you make a very good point re some brands that seem to be doing a hearty cash grab which in turn leads to poor sales. So perhaps the market actually helps to correct such pricing bravado. We can live in hope often times with this regard. What did you think of the pricing for the ingenuer. This one’s an interesting one as it seems to be a little on the fence with peoples reactions.

@@marcusflack1523 Thank you for your nice words. Sorry for the following long reply.
To be honest, IWC has a big problem with pricing. For example:
      BIG PILOT’S WATCH 43 IW329304 = 10k $
      PILOT’S WATCH CHRONOGRAPH 41 IW388102 = 8,5k $
      AQUATIMER AUTOMATIC IW328803 = 7k $
      INGENIEUR AUTOMATIC 40 IW328903 = 12k $
Their prices are all over the place and it doesn't seem to be a real value. I just don't get it. It seems like IWC is just rolling the dice.
The Ingenieur is also communicated in such a way that I don't see any value in that price range.
Genta and an integrated bracelet are not worth such a price premium. The 120h movement may be a factor, but as you said in this video, for most people the movement is secondary.
I really want to like the Ingenieur. The case and the presence on the wrist are great. But the dials look really cheap in person. As if I had printed them cheaply on my 3D printer. Especially the green one, which would be my favourite from the press photos.
The absolute worst decision for IWC was to raise the price of the titanium version by another $3000. This is just big BS. Titanium is not much more expensive or difficult to work with than stainless steel. It makes the whole launch of the Ingenieur look like a money grab.
