- The Flaming Lips paid a fitting tribute to singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston with a cover of his song "True Love Will Find You In The End", performed at Sydney Opera House performance on 1 October 2019.
Wayne Coyne said: "This next song is a really beautiful song that the songwriter Daniel Johnston wrote. He unexpectedly died of a heart attack, I guess it's been a couple of weeks now.
"He himself struggled with manic depression and schizophrenia and yet in his music, he was hoping you could do it, that you could overcome the things that were troubling you - the faults you see in yourself.
"Sometimes loneliest people in the world, the people that need the most help in the world, they’re the last people to ask for it. And even if you offer it to them, I think sometimes they’re the last people that will fucking take it. It can be very frustrating, but I think this gentle song is our key - I think that's what Daniel is saying."

So many artists cover this song because it is a truly beautiful expression of humanity's strength and fragility . Sleep well Mr. Johnston.
Daniel johnston was a genius
Yes
One of the greatest songs performed by one of my favourite bands. My wife and I were at this concert about 4 weeks after my mother died. It was every bit of the healing that we needed at that moment. This is one of my most treasured memories, thank you for posting this.
Thank you for sharing this memory with us. We are sorry for the passing of your mom.
daniel was smiling down from heaven
This song gives me the feels. And this versions id bloody brilliant (apart from the corny swap of one of my favourite lines in the whole song). Good job guys.
Amazing , inspiring, heartbreaking
Rest in peace Daniel Johnston ❤️ I’m sure he would have liked this version.
Going to see them in a few days.
🙏 they play this song. I’m back home visiting my terminally ill Uncle/Godfather. We had been stranger for more than 25 years. We have reconciled and spent time together and this song is so meaningful to me at this time. Wayne. If your “listening”,……please! Thursday night in Montclair, NJ ….. 🙏🙏🤙🤙
RIP Daniel. A great song by a great band. Sweet.
RIP daniel johnston. he would be so proud
That was really beautifull, my heart and my best wishes to all of you Australians, from the other side of the world (I'm Colombian by the way).
amaaaziinnggg! Right on! Nothing but good vibes right here, people! Thank you!
Gonna go cry now 😢
Dang! There have been many, many, many bands that have covered this song...but I'm pretty sure this is the best version I've heard. I'm not even a huge Flaming Lips fan.
Listen to Wilco's cover, for me it's even better
@@justomolet6521 it doesn't have the raw and beauty of this version.
I second Wilco’s version as well. This is sublime though.
FOCKING BEAUTIFUL!!!!!
Thank you, Wayne.
RIP Daniel
Thank you!!! 🙏🏼
You're so welcome!
Holy mackerel. So sad to have been nascent. ❤
Lyrics are on point
wow
Zaphod Beezelbrox for President!
Wish there was no unnecessary screams
I have to disagree. They’re all required. It’s okay for a crowd to be into a performance of a beautiful song. That’s why you play the song.
@@adamlaxmusic I will never understand comments who complain about the audience, like bro have you ever seen live music? It's not about delivering a straightforward version of the song to quietly observe
Beck did the best cover of this song.
Spiritualized had a great cover too!
Great song ruined by crowd pandering. Really ruins the mood.
I love this song but this performance is kinda lame... too cheesy, too beauty-beauty synths... c'mon, get a little rusty and broken when playing something like this
In the words of Tenacious D, this is a tribute. Outsider music doesn’t always have to be rusty and broken, especially renditions from other bands. They’re putting their touch on it and as a mega fan of the original I’m happy and proud they did.
@@Lymbe06 yeah, maybe you're right. This is a concert, so obviously it have to work on their whole set, it couldn't go much away from their other songs.
I was just saying bc I love so much the original and, as for the band, I've never listened to them. But, yes, you're right.
@@19Lqueen17 It's all good my man.
the string patch on that 1 synth was garbage cheese bin stuff and the slow attack on it didn't fit the song at all... the rhodes was nice tho
@@Mewted That's rich considering Daniel used the cheesest equipment available when he recorded it.
His voice is running thru pitch correction. No thanks.
This guy is trying way too hard lmao
Your trying way to hard on the comment bud!!
i like flaming lips, but this kind of completely takes the imperfection and purity from the original. and idk why he says come on, trying to hype up one of the most depressing songs ever made
actually a pretty uplifting song, but i view that whole album in a depressing light knowing his personal struggles
You obviously don't know Wayne. He loves his fans and the Lips give everything they have on stage.
