I've never felt that about Daniel, not for one second. I think he's always just had this feeling of needing to perform and never thought about it at all... like he felt he was put on this earth perform and it wasn't about trying to be the best and I've never felt he used his mental illness to his advantage...I've just never gotten that from him. It's hard to explain Daniel, but he certainly never came off as being pretentious, to me he has a very sweet and kind soul afflicted by mental illness.
as i review the posts, i see how people are so inately cruel. my own petty opinion is that daniel, regardless of his mental/emotional status, is a musical genius and has inspired countless others, including myself, to do something with themselves; artistically speaking.....
This man has a delicate and rare musical gift, his story is one of great struggle and hardship. This guy is a genius and a tortured one at that. He's only... what, maybe 49 and he looks about 60. I'm just glad we are lucky enough to hear his songs and see him perform when he is able. Legend.
Daniel Johnston was an artist in all aspects...He wasn't a musician per se, but he radiated alot of passion as an artist...his lyrics are very witty and deep...he is raw and everything he sings sounds genuine and from the heart...I can't say that about many of today's artist...
Trying to remember, But my feelings can't know for sure. Try to reach out But it's gone... Lucky stars in your eyes... I'm walking the cow... I really don't know how I came here... I really don't know why I'm stayin' here... Oh, Oh, Oh. I'm walking the cow... Tried to point my finger, But the wind keeps blowin' me around In circles...circles...
I love all Daniel's music but all the chord organ demos i.e. Yip Jump Music are my favs. The way he used it ,not only for chords but hitting the keys percussively, really make the songs something special.
I love this song man. Got respect for Daniel. It's a shame he had to be put on medication, a tragic story but a brilliant mind. It's funny (and sad) how we as people collectively can't take someone who's different from the rest of us. "Tried to point my finger But the wind was blowing me around In circles" Great stuff and i hope he finds/has found peace.
yes , I can have empathy for mr. J....I was in a mental ward for 2 whole miserable years, saw alot of this stuff- of course I empathise- thats what makes this guy real!!...I like D.J. and he is able to laugh at himself too!! Didn't mean too be so harsh, guess I was drunk 1 month ago!
awesome, this is creativity at its best. i hear alot of this sound influenced in music nowa days. forster the people, young the giant. bands like that are awesome. 😆
I would like to help this man get healthy. If there is a life to save it is this man's. He is a giver who asks for nothing in return and i am sad seeing him in this condition. Please get healthy Daniel.
Some of the greatest music concieved by uncommon man. Then perfected as hommage by FIREHOSE. God Bless this man and his talent for truly unbrideled perfection.
So that where "I'm Walking The Cow" come from. I only know it when Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam, Eddie singing it at the Bridge School Benefits in 1994. I was always wondering where that song came from. RIP Daniel Johnston 😇💝🌹
Talk about disappointed? I read the title wrong. I read it as Wanking the Cow. I was so excited. Not only a song called Wanking the Cow; but a song called Wanking the Cow by the great Daniel Johnston.
There are some people in this world like Daniel that they will live forever in our hearts 🖤 despite his mental issues he was a warm human being, always tryin to give smiles and love to everyone, big angel
fIREHOSE does a great rendition of this song on their 1991 release Flyin' The Flannel & Mike Watt continues to perform it live. wow, one legend covering another, how great.
I watched the documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" and apart from it being frightening and heartbreaking, in it there's certain things he said that epitomise what this record means to me. "I'm ok coz I know where ever i go I have music in my heart." His childlike purity stills me. Such a stunning song. Andrea x Andrea covers 'Some Things Last A Long Time' on her new album 'Lifelines' due out on 30 May 2011.
I had a truck once, a subaru brat, and I hit a family of cats, must have been a half dozen of them, and it was hot so I had a snow cone, and it was diet if you can believe they even sell such a thing, so anyways I'm driving and working away at that diet grape snowcone which was terrible, and then i.........forgot what was happening, anyways i sold the subaru brat and threw that old snow cone away, and the dead cats, well it turns out i really didn't hit them, this song made me think of that day
For those who would like to hear some excellent and colorful interpretations of Daniel Johnston's songs I heartily recommend Kathy McCarty's "Dead Dog's Eyeball." Her powerfully straight-arrow singing and imaginative band arrangements fully flesh-out Johnston's songs, not altering a note of the great melodies. For those haters, or those just "on the fence" about his shaky voice and extreme low-fi approach, trust me on this. It's hard to find these days, consult your local record shop.
Indeed, everything mainstream enough to hear on radio or TV these days, sounds like it was produced by the same guy...like color scaling in movies....I love Marvel but whoever Disney pays for color correction, makes everything look like wet cement...bright red and blue get muted to death...music all has to have a kicking beat...I love to dance but music needs to cover the spectrum of human emotion. A modern brakeup song is about feeling angry and empowered....but what about feeling sad that something you said or did, has alienated a person from your life that was special to you? Johnston's music communicates sadness, longing, unfulfilled passion....the messy, subtle, and conflicting places inside the human heart.
haha- i don't like top 40. why does it have to be extreme? i listen to stuff like Porcupine Tree, Riverside,OSI, and other "progressive metal" type music, at the moment. this guy is a curious freak. i like the residents for their odd entertainment value. perhaps it's the same with you and daniel johnson?
I feel like those of us who have been fans since the beginning are now disciples spreading his music ❤
I like the way he strains to make the music happen, as if he is battling his body for the right to let his soul speak. Its intoxicating.
this is especially moving when you find out he had schizophrenia
I like the way he's pretending to give a bj to the microphone.
'Try to point my finger but the wind keeps spinning me around in circles'. What a genius line, what a great songwriter!
i love his voice honestly. he’s amazing. i hate how people say he’s trying to make others feel sorry for him. i’m glad he speaks his mind.

Whatever you say, man. Daniel Johnston is one of my favorite songwriters, and I can effortlessly connect with him and his music.
I easily enjoy it. It's a beautiful, simple, and dark song.
Trying to remember,
But my feelings can't know for sure.

Daniel is playing tonight in Houston, TX at Fitzgeralds It's his 50th Birthday Party!
I wish I read this 9 years prior.
I love all Daniel's music but all the chord organ demos i.e. Yip Jump Music are my favs. The way he used it ,not only for chords but hitting the keys percussively, really make the songs something special.
A beautiful song. Rest in peace brother. Lucky stars in your eyes.

American Idol singers can sing. Does that mean they have great songs?
A person who is not moved by this is a person i don't want to know
it's too bad he didn't get famous sooner his younger voice is worlds better than what it sounds like now.

daniel johnston is the atractive version fo don vito
never heard of him
I like the version Pearl Jam does Acoustically.
@Spaxx1001 yeah, i'm sure the bi-polar artist was a hipster...

the firehouse version isnt better at all
dans the man
i like his music
but why is he shacking
He is ruined from the anti psychotics. Almost all of them over time will cause parkinson like symptoms and massive weight gain.
