    Watch that POV makes me appreciate the real techniques instead of movie scripted ones. It also shows you don’t need excessive flashy moves to make it look cool. The flow of the movement of swords is so beautiful and I can appreciate it much more knowing that every move has proper intention and not just random thrusts. It’s aesthetic and practical. Thanks Skall👌

    • @danilooliveira6580
      @danilooliveira6580 7 років тому +9

      the problem is that rapier sparring is all about judging distance while waiting for a opening. so its boring most of the time. but I kinda like rapier against other weapon, because you see the rapier guy on the defensive actually using the hand guard as a shield, and its really cool

    Some pretty good back and forth. Pretty good form. I've been teaching HEMA and martial arts weapons for 24 years and you guys are doing pretty well. Here is a tip, on an aggressive to over aggressive opponent, extend your arms to full, lower your body by bending ur knees about half way and having your weapon in a full thrust. This is an excellent impaling maneuver that will give you a solid thrusted attack. Make sure your feet are planted well and you keep balance in case your opponent is cattish and pulls away. If he does, then counter this with a horizontal swing to the legs about knee height. Try this and see for yourself. Keep up the good work, the education, the practice, and the love. Well done.

    I like the fact that you are sparring at a slower (like 75%) speed. This is very precious and helps develop a good technique in combat if both fencers are disciplined and stick to the slower speed.

      Yeah, currently working on using the Master Cuts to displace and counter cuts in one action but the old counter-parry habits still dominate the sparring. It'll get better eventually.

    There you had an advantage because of the cam nobody wants to hit you to the head.
    And you are a very passiv fighter taking mostly retreating steps where your female counterpart is very streight forward. Very nice to see such differences in personal fighting styles!

    • @Skallagrim
      @Skallagrim  7 років тому +13

      Nah, I made sure to let everyone know before the sparring that I take 100% responsibility for my recording gear and pointed out that the camera is in an impact resistant housing, so nobody had to worry about that.
      And yeah, I naturally tend toward a very cautious, defensive style. Stewart has the same tendency, so the two of us usually don't get long exchanges but more a sort of hit 'n run approach. Working on my offense though. Just need more practice, always more practice. :)

    Liked this a lot, the two different views give us a good view of your technique and the commentary with highlighted hits are easier to track. Wouldn't mind seeing more of this kind of thing, although with your current living situation I understand that it's hard to organize as much sparring as you would like.
    That was a good bit of distance management at 3:39, nice work. Compared to some of your earlier sparring videos you've improved quite a bit. We're all always trying to learn and improve, keep at it Skall.

    When i watch stuff like this i want to cry. I live in a small town in Bulgaria and we have only 2 HEMA clubs in the country so me and my friends are trying to make ourselves an improvised club. But we use wooden swords and heavy but well made shields and we have almost no protection (especially for the hands, ski gloves dot work. The gear is rely expensive ).And not to mention that one gay is using anime " techniques" while I'm trying to do the real thing, so yea he is the monster on the battlefield. And yes as im writing this useless comment ( that skall probably won't see ) i realise that WE ARE JUST FUCKED AND DOOMED never to manage to do what we love! Stay safe!

    • @baddgerpaw
      @baddgerpaw 7 років тому +15

      Here are some things I recommend as someone who was in a similar stance. 1 I haven't tried ski gloves, but hockey gloves for me work well. 2. Get some synthetic blades first, if their tip is to narrow make sure to tape it up so it's a bit more stumpy (Not enough to wreck the weight), I got my longsword from purple heart. The reason why I recommend synthetic is cause wood can break3. If you guys have your synthetic blades and hockey gloves, try to get some full-faced helms, like dirt bike gear, or motorcycle helms, 4 Spar at a medium pace, follow through and hit lightly, and about your friend, when you start sparring, you can show him how your techniques work and maybe convince him to practice historical fighting. Sorry if this wasn't helpful or you didn't need help. You just reminded me of myself and I wanted to help lmao.

    • @martinvasilevki9281
      @martinvasilevki9281 7 років тому +9

      King Keif thank you a lot man i knew some of the things but i havent thought of hockey equipment maybe i can find some. And yes yesterday i repeated a sword for a second time so maybe we should just say fuck it and give some money for some good sword. But if you can tell me how to get a book or something like a guide for the techniques it would be great because we dont have anyone to show us how it is done properly. Thank you for the help.

      Go look for discarded microwave ovens. They have a strong perforated grating inside that comes out as a fair sized sheet. Get a piece of 5mm EVA foam, some velcro, canvas thread and needle, and rubber cement from an arts and crafts store. All you need is scissors and about an hour to make a decent fencing/paintball mask for a couple dollars. You can also do arm, hand, and chin guards out of the same stuff.

    Really nice video!
    It would by nice to see you try to simulate the power of the hits you do while sparing in one of your cutting tests.
    Usually you go full power in those,it would give a better perspective to the damage those hits do in sparring

    Sorry if it's already been recommended, but I'd try a chest mount for the go pro. I used it for fishing and you get a good view of everything and the camera stays straight better

    I would love to watch a sparring match in a room full of cameras. So a completely dark room with the spotlight in the middle, and cameras in several angles so we can get a really cool sparring vid :D
