    TGV, despite knowing how much you like DH (I do as well, I bought the 1939 and 1937 after watching your excellent reviews and because my late mum was born in 1939), you stay true to yourself and give a balanced opinion. Also, you are not only a watch enthusiast and an art-connoisseur, but also a true entertainer and gentleman! You deserve everything good you have in life,

    So glad to see you picked this one up! I love mine, TGV! This was the first Dan Henry that I fell head over heels for. Not the first or last I purchased, but definitely one of my favorites. Being a TopGun fanatic, I too was drawn to the watch due to its Porsche Design chronograph inspiration, but I didn’t want a used piece that I would have to wear with kid gloves.
    I HAD THE EXACT SAME ISSUE WITH MY 1972!! When I first received it, my heart broke. My watch did the exact same thing and I tried everything to fix it. I contacted Dan same day, and he had me send it to his authorized service center in NYC. Grand Central Watch had it serviced (replaced movement) and back on my wrist in a week. Mine has given me no problems since. I absolutely adore mine. I wouldn’t give it up for anything, but it does indeed make you nervous to open the box that way. Let him fix it, and all will be well, TGV.
    Sorry you had the same experience I had, but you will get to see how Dan Henry shines when it comes to customer service and making things right, as well.
    Hope you get it fixed and love yours as much as mine!

      Nice thread on watchuseek, man. Dan Henry is a wise visionary entrepreneur and I guess this is a one-off problem. So far Dan Henry has focused his creations mainly on reinterpretations of classic chronographs so I would love to see a reinterpretation of the Enicar Sherpa in 38-39mm and also of other classic non-chronographs that we miss like Universal Geneve Polerouter. Cheers, mate.

  • @Patrick-pm1sn

    I owned it for 3/4 year, wearing it quite a lot. I did not have exactly these QS issues, but my second hand did not EXACTLY align to the 12. It stood maybe 1/2 min off centre. Besides when running around the second hand did not hop in exact 1 sec steps, in the lower half of the dial it was jumping almost in the middle of the sec increments on the dial, while getting back „on track“ again in the upper half of the dial. I found the PVD to be quite durable, no issues whatsoever even scratched some walls with it without causing scratches on the watch. The Alarm did not align well - you always had to lead the alarm hand by a couple of minutes in order to get the alarm at the right time. I can confirm that the crown when pulled out wobbles alarmingly. I sold the watch again this autumn.

  • @shmendrik213
    @shmendrik213 2 роки тому +1

    About the chronograph minutes hand issue, I have a similar movement in one of my casios. Not sure if you noticed, when you are using the top pusher with the crown pulled out to reset the chronograph seconds hand, the small chronograph minutes hand also moves one minute every full rotation of the red seconds hand. So just hold the pusher for 30 full rotations of the seconds hand to set the small minutes hand back at zero.

    Your review came very timely as I was planning to pull the trigger on this one to celebrate my 50th birthday (hence 1972). Since I already own a 1962 and 1964, I wasn’t worried about QC issues. So what happened with your watch came as a bit of a shock. Please keep us updated on whether Dan Henry is able to fix it. Thanks again for your excellent video!

  • @lettersclinical
    @lettersclinical 2 роки тому +1

    Yes, I had the same issue. For me, the chronometer didn't line up to zero and each seconds tick was more like 1.5 seconds. This corrected in the second 30 seconds of the minute. Unfortunately, in my line of work, measuring the first 15 seconds is crucial, which also rendered the watch useless for me. I emailed Dan and he said that this was a problem with the movement. That said, outside of the work setting, this watch is really good value to wear in terms of aesthetics. The only contemporary alternatives I could find with the same look is the Sinn 144, which is a few thousand dollars more, and the old second-hand Sinns and Porche Orfinas all have the PVD worn off. So from an aesthetics perspective, this watch is unsurpassable, so much so, that I purchased a second one with the different colours.

    Hi TGV
    Very cool looking watch as usual from D.H. Totally get the point about going quartz for this kind of racing/aviation watches - with all the possibilities of functions that follows. You can see something similar from especially a lot of Japanese watches. By the end of the day I would prefer an original Porsche Design watch though😊
    Have a nice weekend and keep up the good work👍

    I bought the silver version of this watch since I know that PVD coatings wear off. I liked the looks of the watch but was unimpressed with the quality of manufacture. For one thing...I could barely hear the alarm. I contacted Dan about this. His response was that I must be old. He told me to download a db meter app and assured me the watch would register 60 db if held 1 cm from my phone. Hmmm...my wrist is not 1 cm from my ear I thought. Anyway I returned the watch and Dan gave me a full refund. I have since bought two other chronos...a Seiko flighty (after seeing a TGV review) and a Giorgio Piola steel chrono to add to my collection of quartz chronos, and I am happy with both. The Dan Henry watches are interesting designs but are made in China. This keeps costs down but perhaps makes QC a bit challenging. It could be hit or miss. Anyway I am not totally turned off from the brand. After all, I did hear back directly from the company owner and he did give me a total refund. I will keep track of future releases as well as TGV reviews and perhaps give DH another try.

  • @styx4947

    It's not a battery issue. It comes from using movement retaining rings that have too wide crown stem channels cut in the plastic ring, leading to a bit more freedom of movement for the the stem and thus the loose feel. For the most part this is caused by having a too long crown stem because the mvmt is much smaller than the case.

    It was so sad to see and hear your disappointment and I could tell it was genuine, and how much you wanted to give this watch a stratospheric review. Now I will also have to put it on hold until I hear the problem has been fixed b/c I really was looking forward to this watch for myself as a long-time fan of Top Gun. Hopefully this can be solved -- and please let us KNOW if it is. I think Dan Henry's philosophy of designing great watches for a price more people can afford is truly admirable and I hope he gets this problem straightened out.

    Firstly, thanks for yet another great informative video.
    The Dan Henry is a nice looking watch and being a quartz movement doesn't put me off at least, as I'm unfortunately a Casio tragic. However, I will say though the issue with the movement is a little disappointing, as I have the $80 AUD Casio aviator chronograph that does not have any of these issues.
    I will admit it's not quite as complicated as the Dan Henry but for the price you'd expect better.

    I bought a 1964 Chrono from Dan Henry and the chronograph hand was off the 12 o clock by a small amount. I did find Dan Henry a little less than helpful when I contacted him about it, explaining that it was a 'common fault' with the movements, and wasnt willing to exchange because I had taken the stickers off the crystal.
    While it didnt bother me all that much in terms of the wearing experience, it did take a little of the magic out of the brand for me. The watches are so good in every other area, but the quality checking of the movements seems to be lacking.

    I consider it a bit of a missed opportunity referencing the 1972 Ducati on the case back instead of the Kawasaki Ninja GPz900. While I understand the racing heritage of this watch and the year the design harkens from, let's face it: the reference that will resonate with most watch buyers is the original Top Gun. If any recognizably specific motorcycle is to be featured on this watch, it should be the one Tom Cruise rode in the 1986 movie. I can practically hear Kenny Login's Danger Zone in my head just thinking about it. Great video review as always, TGV. Would love to hear an update on how DH responds to your understandable complaint about the flawed functionality of the Miyota movement.

    I have the exact same problem with the chronograph minutes sub dial, there is no way to align it, and it gets worse with the use of the chronograph. Mine sits now between 5 and 10 min.
    Also Dan Henry deleted the Disqus comment section on the watch movement instructions page, just because there were some people talking about the issue trying to figure if there was a way to align. Sadly mine is not under warranty anymore, i should have used the warranty right away when i first got it because out of factory there was already a slight misalignment, but since it was so small and i barely ever used the chronograph i though it wasn't necessary. Only much later when i started to give some use to the chrono i realized the problem was getting worse but by then warranty was gone.

  • @andyc6736
    @andyc6736 2 роки тому

    The issue with the hand not resetting is not a movement problem. It’s the hands fitting too loose onto the pinion. I fixed that issue on three different 1972’s. Dan Henry should know about this issue and pulled all unsold watches and have the hands replaced by proper fitting ones!
    By the way: In 2022, Porsche Design is going to launch a limited series re-edition of the original 1972! The watch looks stunning but will cost $7,700!

    Hey mate, unfortunately got the same issue with the chrono function minute hand and those pins, it was really hard to resize the bracelet. Didn't fall in love with the 1972 as I did with my 1963 in fact... I also found it a bit bulky and heavy on my wrist. I really appreciate your very honest review, one of the fewest to do such a frank work on YT!

    Loved the originals by Porsche design, sadly too young to have ever owned one - but they were stand out watches in the professionals tv show and Lewis Collins (best Bond that never was!) wore his in the iconic Who Dares Wins - where there was a great ‘wrist watch check scene’! 👍😎

    Hey hope you see this- I have heard that this is often caused by a bad or nearly run out battery. I had a quartz chrono resetting to various places on the dial that fixed immediately when I replaced the battery, even though the EOL action was not present. Give it a try, perhaps.

    TUG, after recently watching Top Gun Maverick for the first time I went on a search for the watch Tom Cruise wore in the movie. Found out what it was, went to the Porsche site but couldn’t get the purchase approved through my CFO (aka, wife). As luck would have it, or perhaps after spending some quality time on the internet, I was fortunate to find your review. Then, went to the Dan Henry site, only to have my hopes cruelly smashed again as I found out the 1972 Maverick black version watch is sold out. Any suggestions for a substitute in the $300-500 range? Thanks again for your review. It has earned from me a thumbs up and subscription to your channel. All the best.

    I had exactly the same problem with the chrono minute hand on mine (after a bit it fell off completely). I've sent it back for replacement but if it's a common problem maybe I'll have to just get a refund.

    Great review. Love the look of my 1972 but a slightly misaligned and wobbly chrono second hand take some of the quality feel away. I noticed similar wonky behaviour on TGV’s example too. Haven’t experienced the reset issue myself.

      not long after my previous comment, the minute counter issue happened to me too. I do not understand why there is no means to reset it. Have lost faith in the watch and no longer wear it.

    Really appreciate the honest reviews TGV. I can hear the slight disappointment in your voice. It is a beautiful watch however I would definitely have my OCD triggered by that misalignment. I really think Seiko have perfected affordable chronographs, having one myself. However this may just be a QC issue with that particular movement?

    Nice catch there TGV! I've got mine, the same Black 1972 Feb last year just before the Covid explosion X.X. All still good now, except some wobbliness on the red chrono hand. It will move slightly if there's any movement and only observable for a super OCD like me. Approached Dan and he said that it is something to do with the movement and cant really be fixed & I don't dare to remove & reapply the hand by myself XD. I have then moved on and enjoyed the watch as much as I could. Cheers! :D

    I purchased this watch about a year ago after wanting the Porsche Orfina since been about 8 or 9 years old as it was the watch Bodie & Doyle wore in The Professionals, So far so good it fits on my wrist great and keep time spot on, I completely agree on the crown it is incredibly flimsy but apart from that for the price its a great watch and gave me something i wanted without spending ££££.

    I own a 1970 DH diver which I absolutely love . The Top Gun model looks great but knowing that it will probably not work correctly is a no go for me. It is
    a little bit like having a nice car and not all the interior buttons are functioning correctly it would drive me nuts. I just got into PVD coated watches and bought a Sinn UXs from Germany which is spectacular …. And yes it has a different price tag but you should check it out. All the best and thanks for your great content.

    TGV can you do a tier list video of popular watches? I know you are such a fan of all watches but I would love to see where your head is at in terms of what watches/ designs you rank/favor. Or if you were to start your collection today what would you purchase? Great video btw

      Interesting suggestion. I have spoke about "watch tiers" in one of my watch talk videos and why I don't believe in them, but I like your spin on it Noah, its more refreshing than just ranking brands.

    I am on and off for Dan Henry watches, I really like the 1970 but the orange and black limited edition one not the current offerings. Its a shame that there seems to be a problem with the movement that goes beyond just yours and I hope that you can get it resolved in a manner that suits you. Otherwise once again you have managed to produce a quality review that goes further than a standard watch reviewer by encompassing some outside the line facts and details.

    My experience with [ Dan Henry ] : I purchased the 1963 Pilot Chronograph ($280 USD) . Within six months the bezel came off, then the ($45 USD) leather band began to separate at the point where it clasps, both problems I fixed with a tube of Dollar Store Super Glue.

    Funny enough, that Rolex Explorer looks so good with that strap that I'm actually looking at them now. The 36mm fees OK on size? I always wear 39mm - 42mm myself. Not sure if it will be too small. Only way is to go try them I guess.

    Great review as always TGV. I've been looking forward to this watch but I'm finding myself also a little disappointed. I feel in terms of design Dan Henry has nailed it, the look is pretty much perfect. I'm not sure I can get past the wobbly crown and the movement issues though.
    Its still great value but it's the first Dan Henry watch that has made me question Quality. So I find myself undecided.
